Robertson News

After a meticulous facelift and interior redesign, The Robertson Hotel is open for business, and you won’t be able to stay away, says Shonagh Walker.

The grand old Dame was purchased by AeA Hotels Founder, Con Kotis, in 2014, and he has wasted no time in restoring her to her original glory, with a refreshing modern twist.

“We really wanted to stay true to the hotel’s heritage,” says Con when we meet over a delicious coffee in the painstakingly restored, light-filled sunroom.

I can’t help but marvel at the intricate floral chandeliers, and I am almost distracted from my task by the beauty of the setting. However, when Con starts revealing the Hotel’s history, and his plans for its future, my attention is instantly recaptured.

“My wife Lisa and I have been so fortunate to have met many locals, who have shared their fond memories of the hotel,” he smiles. “Likewise, residents from all over the Southern Highlands have revealed a great deal of the building’s history, as well as that of its garden surrounds. It has inspired us so much that we intend to dedicate a section of the hotel to displaying its past and many of the old photos we unearthed during the restoration.”

Over the years, the hotel has had quite a few owners – and name changes (Ranelagh Hotel and Fountaindale Grand Manor), but Con decided to take it back to its roots, after being so warmly embraced by the community.

“The building was very grand for its time and location,” he reflects. “The hotel was originally named Hotel Robertson, and we chose to go back to its original name to keep that dream alive.”

club with a golf course, horse riding, tennis, croquet, lawn bowls, fishing and hunting and of course a venue for balls, parties and events. Con intends to stay true to much of that concept, but with more of an open door, family-friendly policy.

“Our aim is to bring families to the Southern Highlands to enjoy all that it offers. We imagine that visitors wanting to get away from Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong will comprise most of our guests, but locals are more than welcome, too!”

With its sprawling estate and lovingly maintained gardens, The Robertson Hotel is the perfect venue for your next function.

“We see a large demand to provide accommodation for all the wedding venues, where the bridal party, family and friends can all stay together.”

“We will also cater for conferences and musical events like the recent Australian World Orchestra, which featured some of Australia’s best musicians.”

“We have already hosted a number of significant events which have been extremely successful, with great feedback from the guests, which has been inspiring.”

In the not-too-distant future, Con plans on opening a petting zoo, for all guests to enjoy, as well as fuel the fire of up-and-coming artists, with a residency program in the artist studio, which is currently in the process of being restored.

When the restoration of the building is entirely finished, it will boast over 50 rooms and large suites, as well as a presidential suite and spacious bridal suite, each of which is being meticulously refurbished to its original glory.

The bridal suite will be large enough to host the entire bridal party to get ready for the special day, while the gents are not forgotten, with a private groom’s suite where they can gather the night before and on the day to share stories, celebrate and style themselves to perfection. “From the mosaic tiles in the bathrooms, to the crafted wooden bed heads and turned marble bedside lamps, each room is warm and inviting, and will serve the test of time,” says Con.

As for the beds … you may just never want to get out of them!

“We constantly receive compliments on them! They are covered in the finest goose down

and every room or suite has hydronic heating, so the building has a glorious warmth.”

Despite the comfort and luxury of each room, it’s difficult not to stray far from one of the five oversized wood fireplaces. Con smiles when I mention this. “Everyone loves them and they are a lovely place to gather around.”

The Robertson Hotel is now taking accommodation bookings. Visit www.therobertsonhotel.com to make a booking and find out more about this elegant piece of history, tucked away in the beautiful NSW Southern Highlands. I’ll see you there!

There Was a Man Lived in the Moon

Robertson composer Andrew Ford has a new CD of children's songs out just in time for Christmas. The singers are two of Australia's finest. Jane Sheldon's pure soprano voice can be heard introducing Late Night Live on Radio National; and Teddy Tahu Rhodes is Opera Australia's favourite heart-throb, having recently sung the title role in Don Giovanni, the king in The King and I and Emile de Becque in South Pacific.

Most of the tracks are traditional nursery rhymes (for example 'Have You Seen the Muffin Man?', 'Oranges and Lemons', 'Hot Cross Buns' and 'Ding Dong Bell, Pussy's in the Well') which Andrew Ford has arranged for a wide range of instruments.

'I used just about every instrument in the orchestra,' he explains, 'from a piccolo to a bass clarinet, from a harp to a trombone, all in different combinations. The songs are a good way to introduce the sound of these instruments to young children. But also I know from experience that children's music can be on pretty high rotation, and so I was trying to keep it

interesting for the parents and grandparents! The players, by the way, come from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.'

The songs on the CD that aren't nursery rhymes are by Andy himself. He has put to music a set of three Edward Lear poems (including the 'The Owl and the Pussy-cat'), specially written for Teddy Tahu Rhodes. The disc also contains a song Andy composed the day after his own daughter was born.

'Most people would think that “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” was a traditional nursery rhyme, but it's not. It's a poem written by a teenage girl, Jane Taylor, at the end of the 18th century, and it's quite touching. I came up with a new tune and wrote a harp accompaniment, called it simply “Little Star” and dedicated it to Elsie.' The CD is on the ABC Classics label, and Hope Waters will be selling it in the Robertson General Store.

Coco & Pud Jane Matley is a local Robertson resident who has recently opened ‘Coco & Pud’, a bright and inviting ‘lifestyle’ store in the Robertson Shopping Village. Jane acquired her daughter’s luxury pet company and decided to reinvent ‘Coco & Pud’ by adding home and living, giftware and jewellery to the mix and

opening ‘Coco & Pud’s first ‘bricks and mortar‘ store. Understanding the value of integrating our pets into our daily lives and homes, Jane’s cavoodle “Molly” is the face of Coco & Pud and works at the shop with her “Mummy” and looks forward to visits from new and old friends. Since 2011, ‘Coco and Pud’ have been importing, designing and manufacturing luxury pet products for the online retail and wholesale market. With the advent of the new store, and as the new owner/Director of ‘Coco and Pud’, Jane decided to draw on her past design and business savvy. She has incorporated her experience in interior design with

inspiration from her recent travels, which were motivated by her interest for training in End-of-Life Care as a registered nurse. Coco & Pud is a total pleasure to the eye, with an amazing array of tasteful gifts and luxury pet products, and all presented with the care and thought of those extra little touches. Coco & Pud is a total shopping experience and for all of those special events in your life - you will be guaranteed to find that perfect gift. The shop is full with an extensive, ever-changing range including baby gifts, home and living giftware such as cushions, scarves, handbags and jewellery. The ‘Essense’ brand of soaps and body creams are a delight to the senses as you browse. The luxury extensive collection of pet products are a show stopper and your four legged friends will feel pampered and cared for in any of the quality sweaters, toys, beds, coats, harnesses, leads and collars. If your preferred method of shopping is on line, the luxury pet products are also available for purchase from the comfort of your own home.

SAVE THE DATE !!!!!!! THE ROBBO SHOW– February 19 & 20 2016 - Yes it is early The 2016 Robertson Show will be held in February, so start your preparations now! As many may or may not be aware the annual Agricultural Shows run to a very tight schedule all based around the Sydney Royal Show (Easter Show). With this in mind Easter 2016 will be 25 -28 March and the Sydney Royal commences on the 17 March. In order to accommodate all the local shows in our zoned area, the Robertson Show has come forward two weeks. Our alternative would have been to clash with Moss Vale Show and that was not a viable option for anyone. Rest assured it will still be the “Great Little Country Show” you know and love and this year we hope to see a few added extras for you to enjoy.

A Proud History of Vision, Teamwork and Achievement

“ The story of the Robertson Agricultural and Horticultural Society is linked closely with the history of the district it serves, for it was the selectors who came to the area in 1862 and carved farms out of the thick rain forest who laid the foundation for the present Society. (“The Winds of Change” 1979). We need to thank and be grateful for the hard work and foresight of the men and women who established our district and founded the Robertson Show, which has, for the last 135

years brought our community together to celebrate our outstanding agricultural, horticultural and social heritage. The Robertson Show continues to achieve success due to the dedication and hard work of the many people volunteering their time, but there's a lot to be done and sometimes with too few hands. We really need more volunteers from our community. Why not consider lending a hand as a volunteer for the 2016 Show. This year we are early on the 19 & 20 February 2016. Volunteering is not a huge commitment in time but there's a big return in fun and the great feeling of helping your community and knowing you have been part of the “best little country show” around. There are lots of interesting things that need to be done before, during and after the Show. If you are able to volunteer you will be working alongside a great bunch of people and enjoying yourself. Please call Leesa on 0411537600 or Sharon on 0488428776 for more information; we'd love to hear from you. www.robertsonshow.org.au

Best Ever Spring Open Gardens! By Joy Rees

The ROBERTSON Garden Club is thrilled to report to our community that we staged the best ever Spring Open Gardens Weekend over the 10/11th October in glorious sunshine. The village was abuzz, eateries did a roaring trade as did the Robertson Markets over that weekend. The curiosity and craft shops along Hoddle street also enjoyed extra weekend business. With our CTC a hive of activity and the coffee machine running at full speed, visitors flocked in to be greeted by an amazing Botanical Art display hung by local Artist Elaine Musgrave. Expertly presented posters & descriptions of each garden were displayed by our club member, Jenny Smith, so visitors could browse and have a cuppa while deciding where to start the day. The plant stall was our biggest and best and sold every plant all potted by our club members who nurtured them through our frosty winter. With 8 of our most magnificent gardens generously opened, the garden owners spent weeks in getting all looking so spectacular. We can not thank them enough. The local Businesses once again sponsored the event - without their support the R G C could not do it alone and we publicly thank them for their involvement. As we needed to provide 64 gate keepers to cover the 2 days, 4 a day for each gate, many from the community stepped in willingly to help. All have promised to return next year as they enjoyed meeting and greeting so many happy smiling garden lovers and joining in such a great community weekend. Last but not least no-one can do with out them - our local Rural Fire Boys & Girls - always willing to help, put up the signs and sit at gates - thank you Brendon and guys. With well over the number of visitors we had last year our gate takings were $13,000 up $2,000 more then last year. This money as in past years remains in the village . The Robertson Garden Club will be able to present $4,000 to each beneficiary which this year are: CTC, School of Arts, and jointly to the Robertson Show Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. Our Village Our Future

Village information board agreed as

top project

The final workshop of the Council initiated project Our Village Our Future was held at the CTC@Robertson on 15 October at the CTC. The key action agreed at the workshop was to get an “information board” for the village.

The information board would have local, historic, business, environment and current information and would be a special design, more like an information kiosk perhaps. There would be an expression of interest for artists/architects/artisans etc to design and build the structure.

This was the project that the workshop nominated as the one to use the Council funding of $20,000 towards.

The location for the Board was not decided as it was thought this needed wider community input (although Hampden Park was discussed as a possible good option).

Other projects discussed were the establishment of a Robertson History Group and a Robertson association that could represent Robertson in the way that the Chamber of Commerce used to do (this could

be a new organisation or a network of existing organisations perhaps).

At the workshop, the CTC Committee offered to facilitate and host a meeting to establish a working group, comprised of members of the wider community, to work on the implementation of the action plan.

A meeting to establish the working group was held on Thursday 26 November at the CTC@Robertson. The outcomes of this meeting will be reported in a future edition. The complete action plan can be found at http://www.wsc.nsw.gov.au/services/community/our-village-our-future The objectives in the Action Plan are:

The Local economy is supported

The Village is attractive, well maintained with appropriate signage

The Village community is welcoming and supportive of each other

The Village is accessible and there are a variety of transport options

Creativity is supported and encouraged

History is documented and preserved

The natural environment is protected

There are opportunities to participate in sport and recreation and community life

Robertson Burrawang Rovers Soccer Club Leads the Way

By David Wallace

In the last issue we reported on the success of our village’s U13 Gold Soccer Team who won their Grand Final 6-0. Hot on the heals of this comes the news that Robertson Burrawang Rovers will be running a pilot Soccer Program over the Summer. Project 20-20 has received enthusiastic backing from the Highlands Soccer Association and Football New South Wales. The club is also pleased to announce financial backing from Southern Phone and Wingecarribee Shire Council.

Project 20-20 is a community-building project to enhance and expand the experience of Junior players. As a remote, rural community we face a constant challenge to support our young people and deal with the particular challenges that isolation causes. Social cohesion and positive Physical and Mental Health strategies are very important to promote well being within the community. Football is an excellent vehicle that not only attracts and engages young people, but also offers the possibility for many and varied learning opportunities.

Robertson Junior players are being offered the opportunity to be part of an exciting new initiative. Being part of a team helps build confidence, allows for the forming of new friendships and gives young people a sense of belonging.

During the summer Project 20-20 will be offering regular training, coaching, developmental games & broad based community education experiences that promote and develop the young peoples’ skills both on and off the field. The aim is to provide a different look at the game and introduce local young people to some new ideas that will help them to develop and grow as individuals as well as members of a club, a team and the wider Robertson Community.

If you are interested please contact Robertson Burrawang Rover Soccer Club by emailing [email protected] or by phoning David Wallace on 0405438380.

News from St Johns and St Davids Anglican Churches New minister Graham Thomas starts in January By Natalie Tinning

St Johns and St Davids Anglican Church are looking forward to celebrating Christmas at three services this year. Sunday the 20th at St Davids Anglican Church (Church Street, Burrawang) is our first service. It's a family friendly Carols Service celebrating God's great plan in sending the babe Jesus at the first Christmas who was Born to be King. The Carols service will commence at 7pm singing traditional and contemporary Christmas Carols. Back at Robertson on Christmas Eve we will be having a Children's Christmas Celebration. A fun and relevant night proclaiming Christmas Eve is here. Followed by a tasty supper. On Christmas Day we have our traditional service at 8am and our Family service at 9:30am.

After Christmas till the end of January we have our family service, on Sunday at 9:30am. With a special Saturday meeting on the 16th when Tom Treseder , former Olympian sculler is visiting to share his amazing story and his amazing partnership in the creation of Mega Voice.

Over 25 years ago the founders of MegaVoice, Tom Treseder and Ken Crowell, pioneered the development of the first solar powered digital

audio Bible. Their vision was to work in partnership with hundreds of ministries to engage billions of people who are unable to read the Bible for themselves.

After years of prayer and perseverance, the MegaVoice solar powered audio Bible became a reality - and a favourite among those who use audio Bibles to engage unreached people groups. Thanks to these two visionary co-founders, non-readers on every continent can now have access to the Scriptures in their own language, in a form they can readily understand. (Excerpt from www.megavoice.com)

To finish off January our new minister, Rev Graham Thomas will be inducted as St Johns & St Davids Anglican Church Rector on Thursday the 28th at a Special Induction Service at Robertson, at 7.30pm. Graham grew up in Sydney, Australia. He graduated from Moore Theological College in Sydney in 2003. Graham’s passions are Jesus, his family, surfing, playing guitar and the Wallabies! Graham is moving back to Australia with his young family from Dubai to minister at Robertson & Burrawang. Rev Graham Thomas' first service as the minister is on Sunday 31st January.

All are welcome to come and enjoy our celebrations and special services during Christmas & January with our interim minister Rev Hugh Cox.
