Membership requirements: 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) after the first semester (6th, 7th, and 8th grade stu-
dents are eligible) PLEASE NOTE THAT A STUDENT’S CUMULATIVE GPA BEGINS IN 6TH GRADE AND IS FACTORED INTO HIS OR
HER CUMULATIVE GPA IN 7TH AND 8TH GRADE. Completion of the Student Activity Information Form (submitted by the
deadline date – late submissions are NOT accepted) Process of Induction: In late February or early March, eligible students
will receive a letter advising them of their eligibility along with the Student Activity Information Form. This letter and form
will be sent home with the students (they will not be mailed). After students have completed and submitted the Student

(NJHS). Again, this acceptance will be given to the students in school. New Inductees will be required to attend the Induction
Ceremony in May and the ceremony practice on the day before in the gymnasium. What is the purpose or benefit of being a
member of NJHS? First and foremost, it is an honor to be considered for NJHS. Members are considered the leaders in the
school. NJHS is a service organization. Members are expected to participate in the various service projects in a variety of
ways: Donate time and talent (members are asked to volunteer to make posters, work during a lunch period, or support the
service project in other ways) Encourage friends and classmates to participate in the service projects. Enthusiastically sup-
port all service projects. Membership in NJHS is a prestigious addition to a college, scholarship, or job application. Meetings
are scheduled for the first Monday of each month from approximately 3:00 to 3:15 p.m. A list of all meeting dates is sent
home at the first meeting. Service Projects may include: Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Socks for Veterans, December food drive,

10 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in Middle School
Parental support plays an important part in helping preteens and teens succeed in middle school. But as students grow more independent during these years, it can be hard for parents to know which situations call for involvement and which call for a more behind-the-scenes approach. Here are 10 ways to keep your
child on track for academic success in middle school.
1. Attend Back-to-School Night 2. Visit the School and Its Website. 3. Support Homework Expectations 4. Send Your Child to School Ready to Learn 5. Instill Organization Skills 6. Teach Study Skills 7. Know the Disciplinary and Bullying Policies 8. Get Involved 9. Take Attendance Seriously 10. Make Time to Talk About School
Our Taft PTO is a very dedicated group of parents and teachers working to provide support
to our Taft community. We encourage new members to join! Members are notified of upcom-
ing events and are encouraged to volunteer as schedules allow. We know many parents work
full time, so after school PTO opportunities are available. Some of the events and depart-
ments where volunteers are needed are: Dance Chaperones, Media Center, Beach Bash
(scholarship fundraiser), Teacher Breakfasts, Teacher Appreciation. We look forward to
working with you and your student here at Taft!

Dress Code: Students are expected to
come to school properly groomed and
dressed. Clothing should be clean, modest,
and not disruptive to other students in the
classroom. Clothing with inappropriate
messages including: profanity, drugs, alco-
hol or tobacco advertisements are prohibit-
ed. Backpacks, coats, hoods, and hats are
not to be worn in the building. The student
must be clothed from the shoulders to the
mid-thigh. Students whose clothing does
not conform to the above description will be
given an opportunity to call home for some-
thing appropriate or the school will provide
alternative clothing. Students may also be
subject to additional discipline for repeated
dress code violations. For more detailed
information please review the 2020/2021
Student Handbook with your student. If you
have any additional questions regarding
dress code policy please email our Assis-
tant Principal, Josh Graegin
Sixth graders will be issued a Physical Education uniform the first
week of school (Cost included in book rental fee). Locks will also
be distributed at that time. There is a $6.00 replacement fee if the
lock is not returned at the end of the semester. All students are
required to wear their P.E. uniform every day. Tennis shoes, an
old sweatshirt, and personal care items can also be left in their
locker. (No glass containers please) Girls are required to have
their hair tied back during class for the safety of all involved in
the daily activity.
Your total textbook/chromebook rental and fees amount will be made available to you early in August. Please check
your parent access account, newsletter information and phone messages for further announcements on when the
textbook rental and fee costs will be available. When registering online, you will be offered the opportunity to fill
out a Textbook Rental Agreement giving you the opportunity to pay in three monthly payments. If you are unable
to register online, this form is available at our in-school registration or in the school office. If you need assistance
with textbook/Chromebook rental, you may apply using the forms available in the Taft Middle School office or
Crown Point Community School Corporation office. You may apply for all the children in your family on one appli-
cation. If you are currently receiving assistance, YOU NEED TO RE-APPLY FOR ASSISTANCE AT THE BEGIN-
NING OF EVERY SCHOOL YEAR. Textbook rental payments may be paid by credit card online only using your
parent access account. Payments may also be made by cash, check or money order in the school Treasurer’s office.
You will be notified online and at registration of your student’s textbook rental due date. To avoid being turned
over to our collection agency, please pay your student’s textbook rental in full before the due date (the end of Sep-
tember). BOOK RENTAL AGREEMENT – RETURN OF BOOKS - It is the responsibility of the student to return the
books to the issuing teacher and Chromebooks to the Media Center. You will be charged the replacement cost for
lost or damaged books and Chromebooks. Additional books will not be issued until the cost of the book is recov-
ered or arrangements have been made for payment. Please keep in mind, if your student(s) schedule changes, this
could change the amount due for textbook rental/fees. If you have any questions regarding textbook rental or fees,
you may contact Taft’s Treasurer at 663-1507 12011 or by e-mail to [email protected].
