Who Was Mr. Robert Myrl Martin?

He was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He passed away at the age of 49 with cancer.

“He was a husband.”

Bob and Irene Martin were married for 28 years.

They met at Southwestern College.

Mr. Martin taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in Atchison, Haysville, Hutchison, and Cheney, Kansas.

As a principal, he had fun. He played the part of Charlie Brown in a play.

Mr. Martin was the principal of Andover Elementary School for 14 years (1973-1987). He was the principal of Andover Primary School for 5 years (1988-1992).

In 1987, while serving as a principal of Andover Elementary, Mr. Martin helped design Andover Primary School. (This building is now called Robert M. Martin Elementary.)

On Monday, May 11, 1992, the school board recognized Mr. Martin with a 19 year service award.

“He was a friend.”

As a friend he gave many items as gifts that he made from wood.

As a friend, Mr. Martin loved and cared for his dog named Munchkin.

He was a friend to many families who lost their homes in a tornado April 1991. (Mr. Martin is pictured with students. “Thanks” is expressed to Walmart for toy donations.)

As a friend, he would do fun things for people. One day, Mr. Martin dressed like an “Easter Bunny” for children in the community.

He enjoyed gardening.

He often smiled and enjoyed what he was doing.

People liked to spend time with him.

He loved working for students and really cared for them.

He was always there for anyone who needed him.

He tried to help teachers do a good job.

Reading was very important to him.

He had students climb on beanbags outside of his office to read to him.

He read stories to students.

He gave students a button “I read to Mr. Martin” as a reward.

He liked to watch and tape educational programs on TV.

He called each student by name.

Remembering Mr. Martin…

On November 2, 1992 the name of Andover Primary was changed.

On June 2, 1993 a special dedication ceremony was held to show and celebrate the name change.

In the fall of 1996, Andover Intermediate and Martin Primary were renamed Martin Primary South and Martin Primary North.

Again, this was done to remember Mr. Martin.

On May , 2000, the board renamed our school to Robert M. Martin Elementary.

Mrs. Irene Martin is currently a teacher at Butler County Community College. She often plays the piano for our music programs and she serves as a substitute teacher at our school.

Chelli Cranmer is a teacher at Andover High School. Her two children are Catherine (age 11), who attends Andover Middle School, and Corey (age 9), who attends Robert M. Martin Elementary.
