Watched the magnificent recession of farewell,

Clouding, half gleam, half glower,

Composer's Notes

The majority of the drama in this three-piece set takes place in the first movement.

It depicts the bloody death of a soldier, which is followed in the subsequent two pieces

by the funeral and heavenly aftermath narratives. Rhythmic elements in this movement

should be crispand clearly defined, consonants exaggerated. Whispered lines serve to

introduce an other -worldly, sinister textural component, distorting the words and

inducing fear and uncertainty.

Bugles sang, saddening the evening air,

And bugles answeres, sorrowful to hear.

Voices of boys were by the river-side.

Sleep mothered them; and left the twilight sad.

The shadow of the morrow weighed on men.

Voices of old despondancy resigned.

Bowed by the shadow of the morrow, slept

Of receding voices that will not return.

The wailing of the high far-travelling shells

And the deep cursing of the provoking.

The monstrous anger of our tacitum guns.

The majesty of the insults of their mouths.

Composer's notes

For this piece I wished to highlight the dichotomy that Owen's text presents between

sadness and drama. The poem deals with both feelings with a clear distinction between

them: the first eight lines refer primarily to sleep, sadness and resignation, but the mood

suddenly switches to wailing, cursing, anger and insults. The pace of my setting of the first

eight lines is very slow and spacious, with interludess between verses, and long melismas on

certain words. The last four lines come quickly in hurried speech-rhythm, also building up

in texture rapidly.

I took care to organise the choir into a 'subject + narrator' format which means that rather

than assigning, for example, the line 'Voices of boys were by the river-side' to the sopranos

or trebles, the top line sings something else while the tenor solo narrates with these words.

Similary the basses sing the first line of the poem at bar 34 while trebles and first altos

narrate "Voices of old despondancy resigned."
