Etymology of Herb

c.1290, erbe, from O.Fr. erbe, from L. herba "grass, herb." Refashioned after L. since 15c., but the h- was mute until 19c. Herbaceous is from 1646.

Etymology of Spice

c.1225, from O.Fr. espice, from L.L. species (pl.) "spices, goods, wares," from L. "kind, sort". Early druggists recognized four "types" of spices: saffron, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg. Sharp taste. Aromatic.

Page 30: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Etymology of Vitamin 1920, originally vitamine (1912) coined by Pol.

biochemist Casimir Funk (1884-1967), from L. vita "life" + amine, because they were thought to contain amino acids. The terminal -e formally was stripped off when scientists learned the true nature of the substance; -in was acceptable because it was used for neutral substances of undefined composition. The lettering system of nomenclature (Vitamin A, B, C, etc.) was introduced at the same time.

Page 32: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Mineral Etymology

1390, "substance obtained by mining," from M.L. minerale "something mined," from neut. of mineralis "pertaining to mines," from minera "mine." Meaning "material substance that is neither animal nor vegetable" is first recorded 1602. Modern scientific sense is from 1813. Mineral water is from 1562, originally water found in nature with some mineral substance dissolved in it.

Page 36: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Doughnut Etymology

–1809, Amer.Eng., from dough + nut. First recorded by Washington Irving, who described them as "balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat, and called doughnuts, or olykoeks."

Wine in Biblical Times• Regular part of almost everyone’s

diet, just as bread and water were consumed routinely.

• Mainly made from grapes, but also figs, dates and pomegranates.

• Fermented and Unfermented.

Page 78: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Wine in Biblical Times-2

• The common Hebrew word for wine is yayin , From a root meaning "to boil up," "to be in a ferment." Others derive it from a root meaning "to tread out," and hence the juice of the grape trodden out. The Greek word for wine is oinos, and the Latin vinun .

Page 79: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Etymology of Ferment

(1398) from L. fermentare "to leaven, ferment," from fermentum "substance causing fermentation, leaven," from root of fervere "to boil, seethe".

Page 80: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Chemistry of Fermentation• Alcoholic fermentation is not performed by enzymes, but rather

by yeasts. These organisms are not bacteria, but fungi and are found in nature everywhere, particularly in the autumn when fruits ripen and their spores spread in large numbers in the air. They carry out a simple chemical reaction in sugar/water solutions according to the following formula:

(Ethanol)

Heat

(Sugar)Acetic Acid

Page 81: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Etymology of Intoxicate

(1412) "full of poison", from M.L. intoxicatus, pp. of intoxicare "to poison," from L. in- "in" + toxicare "to poison," from toxicum "poison".

Nazirite Vow Re:Wine

• “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.”

(Numbers 6:1-4)

No Wine for Priests on Duty

“Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.” (Lev. 10:9-11)

Some Questions to Ponder

• Did Jesus drink fermented wine?• Was the wine at the Wedding Feast of Cana

fermented?• Can a Christian drink wine for his heart’s

sake? (Other conditions?)• Was Jesus a Nazirite Jew? • Are Deacons allowed some wine?• Can grape juice be preserved without

fermentation?

Page 93: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Jesus Did Not Drink or Make Alcoholic Wine

• Because of his Holy Nature• Because he would not contradict scripture• Because he was a ‘priest’ of God• Because he did not come to mock or

deceive people• Because he did not come to send people to

hell

Jesus Did Not Drink or Make Alcoholic Wine - 2

• Because he was not a stumbling block

• Because the Wedding Feast did not require that it be alcoholic

• Because he would not have gotten glory from making people drunk

‘Benefits’ of Red Wine AHA

Over the past several decades, many studies have been published in science journals about how drinking alcohol may be associated with reduced mortality due to heart disease in some populations. Some researchers have suggested that the benefit may be due to wine, especially red wine. Others are examining the potential benefits of components in red wine such as resveratrol and other antioxidants in reducing heart disease risk. Some of these components may be found in other foods such as grapes or red grape juice. The linkage reported in many of these studies may be due to other lifestyle factors rather than alcohol. Such factors may include increased physical activity, and a diet high in fruits and vegetables and lower in saturated fats. No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke. Resveratrol effects touted, not proven.

Page 96: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Hazards of Red Wine AHA

Drinking more alcohol increases such dangers as alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, suicide and accidents. Also, it's not possible to predict in which people alcoholism will become a problem. Given these and other risks, the American Heart Association cautions people NOT to start drinking ... if they do not already drink alcohol. Consult your doctor on the benefits and risks of consuming alcohol in moderation.

Page 97: Robert Belihar, MS, MD, MPH Brigadier General, USAF(Ret.)

Free Radicals• The term free radical describes any molecule that has a free electron,

and this property makes it react with healthy molecules in a destructive way.

• Because the free radical molecule has an extra electron it creates an extra negative charge. This unbalanced energy makes the free radical bind itself to another balanced molecule as it tries to steal electrons. In so doing, the balanced molecule becomes unbalanced and thus a free radical itself. Perhaps a bit like bumper-cars crashing into each other at the Fair?

• It is known that diet, lifestyle, drugs (e.g. tobacco and alcohol) and radiation etc., are all accelerators of free radical production within the body.

Internal Cleansing

• Water from circulation carries away ‘debris’ from activity at cellular level

• Enters canals (lymph ducts) and passes through filters (lymph nodes) and is deposited into the circulation where it is taken to the liver to be detoxified and excreted by the kidneys

• Facilitated by more water and exercise (‘rebounder’ or minitramp)
