Welcome to the August issue of the Magic Roadshow. I hope you find something inside that inspiresyour magic.

I can't say that the past month has been particularly 'magical'. Although it's certainly not been a badmonth, I'e not attended the first meeting, been to a single lecture, or attended !or made plans to

attend" a single conention. I'e been a slac#er... $h, I did rent and watch '%he Incredible &urt

Wonderstone' the other day.. but I'm not sure if that counts.

I hope summer has been good to you. %his has been one of the mildest summers on record in the outh.

I #now some of you hae e(perienced heat waes and the li#e, but not here. We'e had fifteen inches of

rain in )uly alone, and that's #ept the temperatures in the *+'s for the most part. Hey.. I'm notcomplaining.

oo# for a reiew ne(t month of -ndiluted Hocus/0ocus.. %he Autobiography of Martin 1ardner-.2ue out in $ctober, this autobiography was a wor# in progress irtually until Martin's passing in 3+4+.

It's 5uite an ama6ing compilation of facts and thoughts by not simply a man of magic, but by a man

held in the highest esteem by the li#es of W.H Auden, 7arl agen, and Arthur 7. 7lar#e. 2efinitely putit on your 7hristmas list...

children Lust donEt understand them. Howeer when you focus on pictures drawn on playing cards orusing flash cardsN then Lust the opposite is true.

I learned this effect from Richard andersE BH?pamphlet, 7lose/ p Assassin, from bac# in the4OO+Es. %his is a wonderful effect> I play it for childrenKbut in front of their parents. %he parents will

be as bewildered as the children> I hae also played it !many times>" for only adults with a little bit of

racy humor;; !see the end of this effect" that will get huge laughsKIEll e(plain both.

I hae had literally hundreds of children oer the years approach me at whateer restaurant IEm

wor#ing and say 2o tic#man, do tic#man>N %hatEs how effectie this tric# is>

0lay this effect a couple times and youEll be ery e(cited with the great response you will receie, and

you will !as I hae", ma#e it a permanent part of your repertoire>

9FF97%G Introduce a dec# of cards and hae a child pic# oneKWI%H$% the performer seeing it.

%urn your bac# as the child writes his or her name on the card.

%he magician loses the card in the dec# and then pic#s a card himself and shows it to the spectators.

He then draws a tic#man on the bac# and places the childEs name on it. tic#man fails three times> $h

With a magic pass oer the dec#, the tic#man disappears. When the performer loo#s through the

dec#, he finds tic#man againKwhen he turns it oer P it is the selected card>

M9%H$2G When I playN this effectKI really play it up &I1> I act ery animated because this will notonly ma#e the tric# more fun for the childrenKbut more importantly, you will capture their

imaginations / and with =$ interruptions>

&ring out a dec# of cards. I begin by saying, In a minute I am going to show you my buddy,

tic#man, but first you need to choose a card and put your name on it>N

=oteG I hold the dec# so the children can see all of the cards and I instruct them to choose a spot card.How do I do this8 I pic# out one face card, a N %hey almost always understand. If not, hae the parent pic# one out for the child.

When theyEe put their name on the card !the #ids will enLoy doing this>", say the i( of Hearts, ta#e

the card bac# and then say !this is for the parents>" 2o you remember the card8N %hey will say DyesE to

which you reply, Kwell it doesnEt matter as long as you donEt forget your name>N

7ontrol the card to the top of the dec#. %his is an 9799=% opportunity for you to practice your

7lassic or )iggle 0ass> ay the dec# on the table. ou may double or triple undercut to the brea# to

bring it to the top.

HereEs a little secretKwhen you place the dec# of cards on the table !after controlling the card or cards

to whereer", all attention will be brought bac# to you. %his is especially nice for the narcissistmagician> &ut for the more mentally stable magicians !is that an o(ymoron8>", it is perfect or timed

misdirectionN. It wor#s e(tremely well for many different effects>

cardKletEs say it is the Ma#e tic#man loo# li#e the child for whomyou are doing this.

%urn the double face down and draw a stic#man figure on the bac# of the top card, the signedselection>

At this point, place the " on the bottom of the dec#, and again, perform the unloading

techni5ue as described aboe. %his action will #illN the bac# of this card so no one can see that

tic#man is no longer on there> )ust use timing.

with your mouthKsuch as a popping noiseN. %he noiseN ma#es this effect fun and more animated for

the #ids>

oo# #ids> tic#man Lumped off of the card> HeEs loo#ing for your selection in the dec#>N =ow turn

your left hand, palm up to display the tic#man has Lumped onto the bac# of another card on the dec#>%his is ery strong> 9eryone will appear befuddled.

RememberKeach time that you turn up a double card, there will be a tic#man on the bac# with an

indifferent card showing on the face>

Again, grasp the right long side of the face/up double card with your right thumb on top and the right

first two fingers below.

%urn your left hand !with dec#", palm down as you slide the face/up double to the right side of the

dec# and your right fingers, again, #ic# offN the tic#man card onto the bottom of the face/up dec# asyou flic#N the now single card with your right thumb.

&e careful !again>" to =$% show the bac# of this face/up cardKthere is =$ tic#man on it>

Moe your right hand as if the tic#man is doing a triple flipN in the air and then flic# that card, bac#

upward, to show tic#man has again Lumped off> ay this card onto the other card on the table.

%urn the dec# bac# up once again, to show that tic#man has LumpedN oer to the dec#> %urn another

I thin# we sometimes forget how enLoyable, and how simple, magic can be. We are the ones who ma#eit harder with the belief that, unless it's a #nuc#le/buster, it's not worthy of our repertoir. All I can

guarantee you is this.. $ne day you'll be fooled $ &A2 by one of the 'name' magicians you'll gie

your right arm for the secret. And when you find out he's using this long lost gimmic# called a tripper2ec# to perform his miracles, you'll wonder.. -..now why didn't I thin# of that8-.. and you'll run to the

nearest dealers table to buy a couple.....

I regularly use a 2& plit pades stripper dec#, een for common effects. I'e found the edges to besuperior to &icycle cards.. a result of sharper blades being used on the 2& cards as a result of the

shorter runs.

Watch this short ideo for a suggestion of a simple techni5ue to separate a dec# of cards and set it up

for a tric# re5uiring the dec# to be separated. Although it's certainly not new, it I a good reminder that

there are iable tools around that could ma#e life easier...

that is, I get the same enthusiastic and baffled and mystified reaction whether I perform a simple/to/dotric# or a ery complicated one.

o why, I now wonder, did I spend all that time learning and practicing heay sleight of hand when aparcel of simple tric#s would accomplish my goal of entertaining my family and friends. Alas.

Hampton Williams / My Faorite =on/Magic 0erformance of 3+43

I watch way too much stuff on %B. 9erything from ')ustified' to '&rea#ing &ad', '0awn tars' to'American Idol', and 'urior' to 'o ou %hin# ou 7an 2ance'. I een tape '%he oung and the

Restless' eery day to watch at 3 or C in the morning when all my prime time shows are off.

=ow that I can reflect on 3+43, I can say without a doubt that my faorite moment was watching

Hampton Williams perform on 'o ou %hin# ou 7an 2ance'. Although he made it through the

audition phase, he dropped out in Begas, reali6ing that his style of dance would not bode well when hewas as#ed to tango or two step.

Hampton is an original. He deeloped a ery personal style of dance that is a cross between popping

and freestyle hip hop, with a touch of modern dance. What he has done is applicable to any performingart.. be it dance or magic. He has ta#en a style and, rather than copy a current artist, created his own

personal moes and in the process, emotionally moed an entire audience. %han#s to outube, his

performance has moed hundreds of thousands of others around the world.

%his 34 year old #id from %e(as created a style that transcended what we perceie dance to be by

ignoring the obious and mundane and embracing the original. He appeared on %72 again thisyear, bringing his young daughter and wife, and again bringing the audience to tears. &efore he could

appear in as Begas he was inoled in an auto accident and fractured his lower bac#. I understand

Hampton has a long road to recoery but fully intends to dance again..

I understand that not eeryone will 'get it'.. ou are either deeply moed.. or not. I was...

%he song is 'My Immortal' by 9anescence. $riginally released 4+ years ago, My Immortal won a1rammy in 3++, disappeared, reappeared on the charts in 3++* in the < and went to \4. It
