Hi All, Many thanks for the phone calls & emails after coming off my bike on the Blenheim Blitz rideout. The aches & grazes have gone. I must say that Kevlar lined jeans and leather certainly saved me from a lot more damage to myself. The bike looks a bit sad but it can be easily repaired. Thanks to all who have submitted articles, please keep them coming . Please send them to me at :- [email protected]

DIRECTOR’S CUT By Andy Ball

Hi All, As you would have read in my email, we have moved Bristol club venue to the Cross Hands Hotel, Old Sod-bury. We think it’s a great venue and ticks all the boxes, we hope you agree! The committee would like to thank Chapter member Mike Ludwell who went above and be-yond the call of duty in his quest for the perfect venue, 23 pubs I’m told but not in one day I may add. As I announced via email and club nights we are going ahead with the Birthday party ‘Casino Royale’ at the Ship Inn, Alveston. Tickets priced at £25 are on sale via Tony James and sales are brisk, so book yours now, details in this edition. The Premier Inn is adjoining the Ship Inn so make a night of it, rooms were around the £44 mark but prices will rise when the rooms fill. Our Hayfields Rally tickets are selling steadily, congratu-lations to Paul ‘Flamesy’ Bromhead for winning Febru-ary’s ticket draw and now gets his money reimbursed... that’s the added incentive to get your tickets early and go in to the draw...have you got yours? ;-) We will be requir-ing volunteers shortly to help out over the rally weekend, so if you’d like to help out let Tony James know. I announced at both club nights about the Chapter mile-age challenge where we came third overall, I would just like to add that in our Chapter who registered for the event Mark Chinnick came first with 12,366 miles and was awarded an engraved trophy, second was Greg Payne with 12,088 and third was Ian Mead with 11,764... Sorry guys you don’t get a trophy but congratulations to you all. This year’s event starts on March 15

SECRETARY’S UPDATE By Yvonne Roberts

GWC Secretary's Update Hi, What a shock to arrive back home in the snow from sunny and warm Arizona! Back to reality and the cold weather. Our big news on returning to the UK is that Peter bought us a new Street Glide, and traded in the Ultra! The rea-son for this apparent rashness was that we hired one for a week while we were in Tucson. We rode 900 miles on it during that week and really had a great time. So we are now waiting for our new bike to be ready to collect, excit-ing! We had the Cangen Cymraeg meeting at "St Mary's" first this month, followed by the Bristol Club night the follow-ing week. Unfortunately we were squeezed into the con-servatory at the "Riverside", so I apologize for that. Any-way, there won't be a repeat of that as we'll be holding our Bristol Club nights at the "Cross Hands" as from March 13th! This all came about because Mike Ludwell took Andy's request to members to find another pub, to heart. He's taken his investigation very seriously, judging each pub against strict criteria. All credit to him for finding the "Cross Hands"! Very convenient it is too, being located on the A46, just north of junction 18 on the M4. Anyway, getting back to our February Club nights, it was lovely to see the regular crowd, as well as some of our newer members.

Mark Chinnick was collect-ing trophies yet AGAIN, I can't remember what for! Jenny collected for the raffle at "St Mary's", and raised £53, and Bill did the same at the "Riverside" and collected £93, I also sold some pins and patches for £1 each, which were donated by Riders, making £15. So the total which members have donated to the Orchard Trust in February is £161. (Spookily exactly the same amount as in January)! Thank you to all concerned for your dona-tions to the Orchard Trust. I met Darlow Lloyd from Bridgend at our Cangen Cym-raeg Club night, who has just become a member, along with his wife Janice, so I hope they will become regulars at our meetings there. MERCHANDISE. Please see the Merchandise page on our website for details of our stock. I am always available at Club nights to answer any ques-tions, and you can also contact me by phone on: 01225 751017 or by e-mail: [email protected] Ride safe, Yvonne

Hi All, The days are finally getting noticeably longer, spring is on its way and all thoughts are on this year’s rally sea-son, a great deal to look forward to, hope you have all got your tickets for the Chapter birthday party at the Ship on April 14th, I'll have to dig out the Tux from some-where in the depths of the wardrobe, got a feeling its going to cost me a new dress for the Mrs. Another event not to miss in the not too distant is the rideout that I will be leading on April 22nd to the Prescott Bike Festival near Cheltenham. Leaving Cardiff gate at 7am and Michael Woods services on the M5 at 8am, last year there was an attendance of 8000, I would sug-gest if you are coming to book tickets online at www.prescottbikefestival.co.uk just to be sure of en-try, although the early start should mean there shouldn't be a problem with entry, ticket prices are £10 online Or £12 on the gate (I think there is a concession for senior citizens hmm).

February’s Welsh ride-out considering the weather the preceding few days was well at-tended. With a few hardy souls venturing over the bridge from Bristol and Bath, and Len Daly and myself travelling up from Costa del Pembrokeshire, it’s quite amazing really the geo-graphical spread of the club membership and fantastic to see people travel far and wide for a rideout and a get together, I won't go into detail regarding the rideout, I will leave that to Mark and his rideout report, many thanks to Sean who led the rideout and Mark as sweeper, a good day was had by all, well that’s about it for this month not a great deal to report (oh by the way, still haven't washed the v-rod since November, it’s looking a bit sorry for itself at present, hope the ACF-50 works), see you all soon. Iachydd da,

COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES ROUND-UP

Secretary’s Round-up of February’s Committee Meeting Your Committee held its monthly meeting on February 18

th

We proposed a vote of thanks to Mike Ludwell for re-sponding to Andy’s request for suggestions for a new venue for our Bristol Club nights. Mike has undertaken an extremely thorough investiga-tion into this by systematically visiting loads of pubs in the Bristol area and judging each one against strict cri-teria – including the cost of drinks! He finally came up with the “Cross Hands” located on the A46 just north of junction 18 of the M4. Mike said, “It ticks all the boxes”. After several members of the Committee also paid a visit to judge for themselves, we agreed with him! At the time of writing this, Andy has just contacted the “Cross Hands” to confirm that we will be holding our next Club night there on March 13th. Job done! Andy reported back on the UK Directors’ meeting that he attended in Windsor in January. (Not at the castle)! You’ll be pleased to hear that we comply with all the regulations expected by H.O.G.! We’ll be adding to our number of Road Captains this year by sending 6 of our members on Riders Edge training. Tony James, our Rally Coordinator, joined us to give us an update on both our Rally and our Birthday Party. Seems plans are going well for these Chapter events.

Looking ahead to 2013, and our 10

th Anniversary Cele-

brations, we are checking on dates so that we don’t clash with events such as the European Rally in Rome, which will be held from June 13

th – 16

th.

Andy Kendall, our Safety Officer is liaising with Chris and Al to continue offering refresher rides to our mem-bers beginning in April. Both Andy and Al have been pleased with the general standard of group riding re-cently. Watch out for our new Safe-Riding Guidelines which will be on our website soon. Peter has noticed that the opening rate of e-mails sent to our members by MailChimp is sometimes only 50%. This means that many of you are not reading important Chapter information. The date of our next meeting will be March 10th at 10.30am at Riders. A copy of the full minutes is available on request. Yvonne Roberts, Secretary

Hi all, Not much to report at the moment. We had a very suc-cessful auction at the Christmas party where we raised over £500.00 pounds with just four items and once again a big thank you to Riders for their donation of two Harley jackets. I have had a letter and a picture of the new shed we bought to house mobility scooters and a very big thank you from all for that. As you read this you will be aware of the charity run that some of the guys and girls are going to be doing in April with all proceeds to the Orchard Trust so let’s all get behind them and show our support. I would run my-self but being an ex pro it wouldn't be fair so I am going to go along on the day take a few pictures and just show my support. So why not come along and join us? the more the merrier.

As always if anyone has any ideas to raise money for our chosen charity please feel free to get in touch. All the best, Bill

PETE and DUNCANS PUMP STOP

Writing this article last month, I was sitting on our balcony in Tucson, in the sun and a pleas-ant mid 20s temperature, pon-dering vaguely on everyone pick-ing up their RoadHOGs at Febru-ary Club Night, still in Winter.

In fact, it turned out even worse than I feared. After leaving Tuc-son, we had 3 spare days so we decided to head over into Califor-nia and do a recci of Palm Springs (staying at the hotel we are using for the second night’s stay of the OTRA California Tour). We’d never been to there before, and it’s a really interesting place, even if some of the people are pretty weird (e.g. pushing their dogs around in chil-drens’ pushchairs!). The food was great – fantastic up-market fish and chips restaurant (serving every type of fish imaginable) across the road from the hotel.

After all that, it was back to Arizona for the flight to Lon-don Heathrow and an arrival in Wiltshire in that Saturday blizzard – perfect timing. At least it wasn’t the next day, when Heathrow became semi-functional. We are so good in this country, at doing weather things badly. Next it’s the expected drought – what does our country do with all the rain?

One of the best things for us, when we visit the States, is hiring a bike and riding the desert highway (just like the song, with her long blonde hair). Rather than just go for an Ultra, I had thought of trying the Dyna Switchback, as we didn’t need masses of luggage space for day rides. Turned out not to be in the 2012 rental fleet, so I was hmmm, might as well have a Street Glide; not that I’d ever ridden one before.

It was a brilliant ride and, despite the lack of an armchair behind me, Yvonne com-plained of numb-bum only a couple of times! The bike we had was brand new, with the 103 engine – certainly made it feel pretty nim-

ble and responsive, added to which, the Street Glide is a good few kilos lighter than the Ultra.

So, after pondering on the pros (lots) and cons (not many), we have become Street Gliders. It is a clone of the rental bike in the pic – colour and everything, aside from the stock seat, which has been replaced by a com-fortable Mustang Tourer. Can’t wait for the heat wave that is due to arrive by the end of the month!

So, coming back to the weather, last month Duncan’s tip turned out to be unknowingly premature. It was all about cleaning off the corrosion protectant. Fortunately, by the time you were reading your mag, the weather had turned for the worse and presumably everyone ignored the ad-vice! Anyway, here’s the new “Tip of the Month”, short and sweet:

Hopefully by now we have had enough nice weather to make you want to put your pride and joy back on the road. But, just before you do, it’s always worth doing some basic checks first. So, we have removed any corro-sion protectant, your battery is fully charged and you have started your bike and warmed her up all ready. 1. Check your oil level. 2. After the bike has been run take a visual walk round and look for any signs of leaks that may have occurred due to dry seals. 3. Check operation of all lights including stop and side light bulbs. 4. Check the horn operation 5. Check and adjust tyre pressures. These are just 5 simple checks that you should do once a week for the daily commute or each time you use your bike for the occasional ride. Safe riding Duncan@ riders

SAFETY OFFICER’S UPDATE By Andy Kendall Snr MAG MATTERS Dear members. The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) is locked in a fight with the mindless bureau-cratic machine called the EU Commission. The Commission are hell bent on destroy-ing the freedom of motorcycling as we know it today by bringing in a vast array of laws and regulations that will affect every one of us who ride both here, and in Europe. Most of the proposed regulations will hit Harley Davidson owners the hard-est. (Just to mention one, the modification of bikes and engines). You should all now be aware of the amount of work MAG is involved with trying to put pressure on the EU via our MEPs to educate the Commission that they are wrong and should not be discriminating against one section of road users. You will have no doubt also noticed that the Committee have been forwarding on to members the many cam-paigns and petitions that the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) have been raising on our behalf. The minority of us in the Chapter who are members of MAG get the up to date news, campaigns and petitions send to us first hand as we are on the MAG mailing list. I will now get on my soapbox. Permission to have a rant? Who cares I’m going to anyway!!! My point is, why should it be down to the Chapter Com-mittee to inform its members of such important matters. Should it not be in the interest of every mem-ber to receive MAG circulations first hand? If you agree with this, then the answer is simple.

JOIN THE MOTORCYCLE AC-TION GROUP!!!!!! You pay enough for your Harleys, so £20 per year subscription to MAG, (less than 50p per week), is nothing. If MAG fails in their cam-paign then it will be the likes of our membership that will suffer. It is a sad situation that so many of the membership feel it is okay to leave it to the few to keep them in-formed about what is happening

with the unjust behaviour of the EU Commission. MAG

does so much for us and your money is needed to keep the pressure on our Parliament as well as the EU. This organisation is fighting for YOUR rights. Don’t you think it only right to support them? It’s a no brainer folks, do nothing and the EU bully boys win and we will have to suffer the consequences. It’s easier to get proposed regulations kicked out than get them struck off the statute books when they are law. Think of it this way, it’s not what MAG can do for me, but, what can I do for MAG. End of sermon, stepping down from my soapbox, end of rant.

FROM THE FRONT By Alan “Big Al” Stokes-

Hi All So here we are and already into March. The Chapter has completed four rides this year with no cancellations due to the weather. That alone is a major achievement, especially considering the start we had this time last year. I feared the worst in early January but the weather gods have been good to us so far. At this point I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that has made the effort to support the winter ride-outs. The teams put a great deal of time into or-ganising the rides, so it’s always good to see them well supported, and they really have been. I have personally managed to attend three of the four rides and they have all been enjoyable, although a little chilly at times. Sean Gully and Mark Chivers February ride up through the Brecons particularly sticks in my mind …. frozen fingers, hands and bones. No heated gloves for this boy! I think it is safe to say it was very cold, damp, and all set off by the back drop of snow covered hills. It made me feel cold. No wonder the SAS train in the area. Even the sheep looked cold …… or were they just nervous knowing Sean was roaming the area? Something to ponder. That said we also had some sun-shine, not a lot but some. As I said to the lads at the time, great scenery, it’s a shame we cannot see any of it due to the mist LoL. Still, the 12 off us that ventured out had a great days riding in good company. As al-ways we had a few hot drinks, hot food and good laugh. For those of you who are new, I keep a record of every-one who attends our organised ride-outs. At the end of the year we present the “GWC Ride-out Challenge” trophy to the individual who has attended the most rides. 2011 was a close run thing with Mark Chinnick winning by a small margin. As a result, he was pre-sented with a very nice tankard at the January club night for his dedication. He assures me it will be put to good use at the forthcoming rallies planned for this coming season. I don’t think there is much chance of it gathering dust in some display cabinet at home. This year’s competition it is hotting up nicely with Mark Chinnick and Andy “RKK” Kendall leading the way. I think Mark is determined to retain his crown. I also know that “RKK” intends to try and beat him. So it’s up to you guys and gals to get out there and put in a chal-lenge. It’s all in aid of a bit of fun, so please come along and join us. On a different subject, March should see the end of winter and already the nights are drawing out. Remem-ber last April? Short sleeves and summer temperatures if my memory serves me correctly. So for those of you who have had your bikes off the road, its time to think about those pre-riding season checks, batteries, bulbs and tyres to name a few. Don’t get caught out by a nice sunny day and a bike that won’t run because the bat-

tery is flat. I also know a couple of indi-viduals have given their pride and joy some substantial overhauls. Time to get that work finished boys and get those engines fired up.

11th March 2012 – Graham Roach and Team

“ Rolling Thunder Rides”

The ride will head to Thunder Road (Bike Shop) in Brid-

gend. The plan is to take a scenic costal route. Why not

join us for a great ride.

Meet at McDonalds, Pencoed M4/J35 for 10.00 a.m. Be

fuelled up ready and ready to depart at 10.30 a.m. The

ride finishes at Thunder Road, Bridgend.

This is a Level A ride of circa 100 miles. 25th March 2012 – Bazzer Aggett and Team “Wandering to West Bay” Meet at McDonalds, Brislington (opposite Riders of Bristol) for 09.00 a.m. Be fuelled up ready to depart at 09.30 a.m. The ride will take a cross country route on the A37 heading for Crewkerne and West Bay. The plan is for a 1 ½ to 2 hours stop for lunch. The return route will be via the coast road to Weymouth. Entering Weymouth we will ride along the sea front and then head for Cerne Abbas where the hillside giant can be viewed as we ride by. The ride will finish at McDonalds, Brislington The ride will be approximately 130 / 150 miles but is not complex. Suitable for all riders. This is classed as Level B ride. For last minute updates please call the “Hotline” on 08444 994508 Until the next time, have fun and ride hard.

BLENHEIM BLITZ RIDEOUT By Alan “Big Al” Stokes

Rideout Report “Blenheim Blitz”

Sunday 26th

March 2012

February’s ride-out was an opportunity to take a step back in time and visit Blenheim Palace, the home of the current Duke of Marlborough. The visit idea first formed when the team and I sat down to plan out Big Al’s 2012 ride destinations. Now most of you who know Andy Kendall will be aware of his interest in last century’s world war history. It was discussing Winston Churchill and his birth place that formed the basis of a plan. It was a destination that Andy had always wanted to visit but like most of us, he had never got around to it. So after some debate we were all in agreement that it was a great idea, and now it was down to the detail. How to get there and incorporate something for everyone? Andy volunteered (lol) to take the lead and sort the ride. At this point we engaged Bazzer (Activities Officer) and his merry band of helpers to sort out a group discount for those who wanted to explore a past era. We also decided that not everyone who did the ride would want to visit the Palace. Dave “LBD” Roberts came up with the plan to also take a group into Oxford for lunch. This actually worked out extremely well with 11 riders out of the 31 bikes taking up that option on the day. And so to the day. Rising early I was greeted by a glori-ous sunny day. Clear skies and a forecast that it would stay that way across the South of England. Brilliant. It has become a bit of a tradition that my teams rides seem to attract fine weather and this one was no differ-ent. Anyway, Baz and Jacs had stayed with Sue and I the night before, so we would have some company rid-ing to the start point. Heading to the meet point at the Cross Hands (not the Compass Inn, you know who you are) we rode east into the early morning sun. Although a little fresh it was great weather for February. It cer-tainly cleared my head from the previous late night fri-volities. Arriving we were greeted by a good number of fellow Great Western members. Obviously the combina-tion of a good ride destination, route and fine weather had dragged a few out of bed. This would be Andy Kendall’s first lead as a Road Cap-tain and he was really pleased to see such a large turn out (lol). Our group were thinking of running a book on how many people he could lose. Anyway, following the brief we all headed off towards Acton Turville, Lucking-ton and Sherston. The ride would take us through the Cotswold countryside, taking in some picturesque vil-lages along the route. Some of the roads had seen bet-ter days and were obviously suffering from past winters. Still for most, it made for a good route on some previ-ously unknown roads.

Eventually joining the A433, we headed through Tetbury with its pavement cafes satisfying the refreshment needs of the early morning sightseers. From there we rode on to Cirencester and the services. This was our planned comfort stop or “fags and bladders” as I prefer to call it. Approaching here we lost Mike (Badger) Brake from the ride. He was marshalling on the day and was making his way to the services. Heading around the ring road his front wheel decided to do its own thing and he ended up talking to the tarmac. As the back man, he was in my mirror one second, gone the next. As I slowed for the roundabout, Dave Roberts was indicating that he had gone down. Thankfully, he was wearing good quality riding gear (Kevlar jeans, boots, helmet, gloves and leather jacket) which saw him walk away with a cut elbow and a few bruises. His jacket was a right off but it had done its job. Something to all think about before you next set off in short sleeves. Unfortu-nately his bike faired less well and sustained a fair bit of damage. Able to ride it, he decided to head off for home. Meanwhile Dave (LBD) Roberts and I who had been at the accident caught up with the rest of the group and we eventually headed for Oxfordshire. En-route we would again ride through more Cotswold gems such as Barns-ley, Bibury and Aldsworth. All very scenic villages and they are worth adding to a ride if you pass that way. Bibury is an extremely popular stop off point for tourists. The Harleys always turn heads and start the camera’s clicking. Leaving the Cotswolds we turn right onto the A40 and we head through Burford, then on past Whit-ney. Very affluent areas and no sign of any recession from what I could see. The final leg took us through Woodstock (not the original concert site, that’s in the USA) and into Blenheim. It was here that the group split. I think those off us who visited the place enjoyed ourselves although the time seemed to go by quickly. You could easily spend a day there, as apart from the palace, the grounds are exten-sive with some great walks. A great location to head for with the family and a picnic. There was certainly plenty to do and see. Look it up on the web if you are inter-ested. The return trip took us to Oxford where we met up with the group who went in search of academia and food. Fuelled up we took a fairly direct route back down the A420 and A419 leading to the M4 east of Swindon. This left a short ride down to Leigh Delamere services where

the ride finished.

LADIES OF HARLEY by Jane Scott

Hello Ladies Yes it’s here again I can’t believe where the month has gone… and hopefully by the time this has gone to print I will have uncovered the bike and started to put some mileage on the clock for 2012. What’s been happening over the past month …We had our first LOH meet in February with approx 12 ladies attending, so the GURZELS are now officially up and running for 2012 with plans now in motion and as they say – Things Can Only Get Better!! Yes it would be nice to see some more Ladies come forward for this event. I know its early days but if you’re wanting to come along and perform on the night then you will need to attend the meetings. We will have had our 2

nd meeting before the March club night and the first

rehearsal will be in April, details to follow for the new rehearsal venue. As part of Bazzer’s riding team I will be busy doing the pre rides, making sure everything is in place for the 25

th

March which will take us to the seaside town of West Bay. It’s an early start but well worth the trip for fish and chips and an ice cream, but don’t forget clocks go for-ward that weekend. My God At The Time of Writing This Article its 40 yes 40 days….?? The Forest Of Dean Half Marathon 1

st April

Hopefully by the time of the March club night I shall feel a lot more confident that I will complete the course, I

would never have thought that running could take over my life as much as it has, I can’t have the odd glass of wine or two or in-dulge in too much food … some may say that this is not a bad thing…. Perhaps there could be cause for a celebration after…There is a such a buzz when we talk about this run, and I know Anita and I have been getting tips from the “pros” on how to run and what to expect on the day, don’t worry Anita I’ve ordered the tow rope just in case !! Next of course is the 9

th Birthday Party 14

th April with a

Casino Royale Night I’m sure it will be a great evening and a chance to put on the posh frock!! That’s about it for now, I hope you like the New Club Night Venue. Take Care All Jane Contact details [email protected] Mobile no 07894086626

BLENHEIM BLITZ RIDEOUT Continued…………………...

So with all our goodbyes spoken, farewell hugs and kisses imparted, we headed off for home to a well earned cup of coffee. As the sun was started to drop it did feel a little on the cold side but still very pleasant. We had managed to ride east into the early morning sun and tracked it around as it started to set in the west. I personally completed 160 miles on the day in the com-pany of good friends. I hope that all those who attended the ride enjoyed themselves. On behalf of “Big Al’s Tours” we look forward to you company in the future. All that’s left is to thank the ride team for their ongoing support and commitment. Another good job done. Take a bow Andy Kendall (lead), Tony Yendle (sweeper), Mike “Badger” Brake (marshal and stuntman), Dale Jenkins (marshal), Dave “LBD” Roberts (marshal).

Thanks to Andy “RKK” Kendall (marshal) who jumped in and helped out when Badger had to leave the group. Also our thanks go to Bazzer Aggett and Anita Cockwell for sorting out the group booking and collecting the monies for Blenheim Palace. Their upfront prep work made it all go like clockwork when we arrived, including an A1 parking spot for the bikes. Until next time. Ride hard and safe. Alan “Big AL” Stokes Head Road Captain

BAZZER’S PAGE By Barry “Bazzer” Aggett

Hi All, Is winter behind us? I’m not so sure but anyway there is a touch of Spring in the air and it’s nice to see the daylight hours are gradually creeping into the eve-ning. The visit to Blenheim Palace, Big Al & team rideout on the 26

th February attracted 24 members wishing to

view the grandeur of the Palace and take in the his-tory. And moving on what’s next:-

1st

April: Forest of Dean Trails Half Marathon

The closing date for entering was the 29

th February and

we have 8 brave (or mad) GWC runners, that I’m aware of, who have entered with the sole aim of raising money for the Orchard Trust. The GWC Entrants are: Jane Scott, Jeff Gleed, Julie Quick, Sarah Vass (daughter of Dave Vass), Anita Cockwell, Graham Jones, Nigel Bateman and yours truly Mr Too Tall. Congratulations to all of them before they even take a step. So how can you help I hear you ask!! Well, there are 3 ways to donate money. Each of the GWC runners will have an individual spon-sorship form.

Throughout March we will be running a competition whereby GWC members try to guess the combined average finishing time for the GWC entrants who complete the course. i.e. hours, minutes and sec-onds. Each guess will cost you £1 and you can make as many guesses as you like. To give you a clue based on target times the average would be circa 2 hrs 20 minutes, but then again 3 of our entrants have never run a Half Marathon before!!!

The closest guess will win a fantastic prize of a free

bike service very kindly donated by Riders of Bristol.

In the event of a tie it will be sudden death by drawing

straws!!

Anita Cockwell and Lynne Avery will be collating your guesses and collecting your payments, so please either see them in person or post a cheque, made payable to GWC, to one of the following addresses:-

Anita Cockwell, 7 The Heritage, Camerton, Bath, BA2 0AU.

Lynne Avery, 10 Church View Close, Llandough, Penarth, CF64 2NN.

As they say you have to be in it to win it so dig deep,

ALL proceeds are going to a worthy cause.

Note, the competition is open to GWC members

only and any guesses and payments (including

cheques in the post) which have not been re-

ceived by midnight on the 31st

March will not be

included in the competition, so don’t leave it to

the last minute and be disappointed.

Lastly if you prefer something quick and simple you can donate directly to the Orchard Trust using the follow-ing link http://www.justgiving.com/orchardtrust, but this way you are not entering the competition as we will not have any record of your donation.

WINTER RALLIES By John Nash

Hi Thought some of the members might be interested in hearing about our exploits at the Dragon Rally which is held each February in Snowdonia. It’s not for the faint hearted as it’s bikes only, no cars or vans and involves camping overnight. When applying you don’t actually know where the site will be ,you have to meet at a control point somewhere in Snowdonia and are then given instructions as to where the campsite is. With the weather having not been too bad this winter me and the wife thought we’d give it a go and got tickets. Typical the weekend of the rally started with freezing rain and snow. Decided to leave the Softail and the missis English iron in the garage and so we mounted our jap sewing machines and slid cautiously out of the Wye Val-ley with several inches of snow on the ground. Traffic reports from above Ludlow talked of hazardous driving conditions so hit the M5 and headed for Oswestry our overnight stop. You really appreciate heated grips and good thermals at that time of the year in sub zero conditions. Finally reached Oswestry late Friday having followed the gritting lorry up the A5 in a blinding snow storm. Saturday dawned clear and bright and it was with some reluctance we left the Premier Inn at Oswestry and scraped a layer of ice of the bikes and headed for Capel Curig where the control point was near. As we neared the control point bikes started appearing from nowhere and when we reached the car park several hundred bikes were there already. We all duly queued to get direc-tions and were informed the site was another 6-7 miles a lake near Beddgelert.

By now the weather wasn’t too bad ,still cool but dry and soon we were at the site and the tent was pitched, some-thing I didn’t think was going to happen Friday morning! You can tell the spirit the rally is organised in, as on arri-val you get given soup and a roll, a rally badge several mars bars and a miniature bottle of whisky. Bikers come from all over Europe and the UK with quite a large con-tingent from Germany. It’s worth going just to see the mixture of bikes on site, they ranged from big trailies ,sidecars, assorted road bikes to some vintage bikes that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a museum, all ridden considerable dis-tances in poor conditions. After several hours of me wan-dering around saying “coorh” I haven’t seen one of those for years and in such good condition my wife’s eyes were starting to glaze over so it was time to hit the bar. A bar and entertainment isn’t always guaranteed so was a welcome bonus as the main emphasis of the rally is just to turn up and talk and celebrate biking. A good night was had by all with a rock band pumping out music to the early hours in an old stone barn. We managed a few hours sleep despite the cold and headed home with a lot of hung over bikers on the Sun-day morning. I wondered how the group of guys who had come up from Aylesbury on some very ancient Honda C90s would fair on their way back as it was still perish-ingly cold. So if you fancy a winter rally I’d recommend this one, very basic but enjoyable all the same. John.

Hi everyone, Hope you have all managed to cope with the cccold weather of late – as I write this – Feb 19

th – I have just

heard the weather forecast for next weekend – T shirt weather!! Yeah right, bring it on and lets see! It would be nice if they are right as it’s our teams’ ride-out to Blenheim Palace, hmmm fingers crossed! Had a cold start today with around 10 others, met at Gordano and had a short trip to visit the 32nd Carole Nash Bristol Classic Motor Cycle Show at the Bath & West show grounds, Shepton Mallet, saw some fantas-tic old bikes and it was interesting to see some of the bikes that I used to have ** years ago! They all look so small to me now – is that an age thing? For example, when I was around 20’ish, my dream bike was a Norton Commando 750cc (don’t think the 850 was out then), anyway to me that was the Mutts Nuts and I bought one (second hand), felt like a King riding that around, saw a few of them today and it almost looked like they had been made by Dinky! Still, it was good to meander down memory lane for a while and actually remember when I was young(er). LOL It’s been a cold, but beautiful day for riding and saw a few others from the Chapter there as well, all in all, a “not bad” day for February! An update from Andy B at Club night last week, and we, as a Chapter came 3

rd in the Annual Milage Challenge

last year – can we better that this year? And who is going to give Mark Chinnick some competi-tion for the most miles within the Chapter?? Come on Graham, give him a run for his money, he’s nicked your title !! Mark really is on a roll at the moment, last month he received the trophy for most rideouts for the year, what’s lined up for March clubnight Mark?

Mark getting his trophy at Clubnight.

Anyway enough dribblings. A quick update on the Chapter membership to date:- End of January 2011 - full members (161), Guest + associate combined, (63) End of January 2012 - full members (169), guest + as-sociate combined, (70) All looking very healthy and slightly up on the same time last year, no doubt when the riding season gets into full flow the numbers will increase markedly. Now, instead of writing about historical things, it makes a change to write about History in Making for our Chap-ter. As you all know, next year is our 10

th Anniversary, and

as part of the 10th Anniversary planning commitee, we

had a 2 hour meeting yesterday, Saturday the 18th.

Now it would not be the right thing to do for me to tell you yet what is planned (and that is not for me to do anyway), but I can tell you there is quite a lot on the agenda for next year and it’s going to be a very busy and exciting year for the Chapter and all of you who want to embrace it and make it all it can be, suffice for me to say there is something for everyone: There will be “special” one day Riding events, Social (non riding) events, long weekend’s (in hotels!), some spectacular rides (where most of us haven’t been be-fore!) and a “longer” event, possibly a 2 weeker! Mix all that in with the Monthly Rideout programme and you can see how much there is to get involved in and enjoy! Still loads of planning to do with fixing dates etc, and there will be a lot of people involved in the planning and behind the scenes. So, with fair warning – Clear your diaries for next year and watch this space as they say! (Not exactly this space but you know what I mean!) Till then, enjoy all to come for this year, stay safe and have fun! Tony Yendle – Historian.

GWC RIDEOUT – AROUND THE BRECONS As I went to bed on Saturday night I looked out of the window and to my horror a heavy frost lay on all the cars, I was thinking it’s going to be cold for the rideout tomorrow….. Sunday morning dawned and to my relief NO FROST!!,it looked quite clear outside, so the day was looking better already. The rideout team for the day was Sean Gully (Road Captain), Graham Roach (Breakdown) and myself Mark Chivers (Sweeper) and with the start planned for Cardiff West Services Jct 33 M4; meet-ing at 10.00am for a 10.30am depart. I was determined to arrive early beating Sean (the constant “Early Bird”) but no as Graham and myself entered the car park Sean was already getting the cof-fees in. With another eight riders turning up we had a nice little group so with 10.30 looming Sean called everybody together to do the regular rideout brief-ing; the Group did include one new mem-ber so in addition to the general route briefing I went through our rideout proce-dure too and then we were off. M4 heading east for one junction onto the A470, keeping to dual carriageways and A roads in consideration of the tricky weather & road conditions we made our way to Brecon. As we climbed closer towards Story Arm it became decidedly chilly with a layer of mist blocking our superb views of the hills and valleys of the Brecon Beacons. It also made riding conditions quite demanding but the group was made up of experienced rid-ers so this didn’t delay our progress. By the time we reached Brecon the weather had cleared up and so we headed on towards Sennybridge; our venue for lunch. I must admit it was nice to have a hot meal to defrost the body (!). Once the bikes and riders were refuelled we headed back out of the village and turned right towards Swansea on the A4067. With the mist cleared, we had some lovely views of the snow-capped mountains as we travelled the very scenic roads through to Swansea. We had gone through some trying conditions, with a brisk chill, rain, and even snow to contend with but as we neared Swansea the sun made an appearance which improved our riding considerably. We had a quick stop at M&Ps in Swansea where we found it a bit quiet but I suppose the weather didn’t help. Opposite their current showroom is the new building

that will house the Kawasaki dealership and, if rumours are correct, the first Welsh Harley Dealership that they are planning to open in June 2012 (I’m sure there will be regular updates on this via the RoadHOG and Chap-ter meetings). Leaving M&Ps on our last leg, we journeyed back up the M4 to where we started at Jct 33 Cardiff West Ser-

vices calling in just to say our farewells and thanks for the day. Getting back in the house just in time to see Wales beat Scotland in the six nations rugby really made my day perfect. So even though we had to contend with some demanding riding conditions. I believe a good day was had by all. Ride safe , Mark

For some while now I have watched the blog ad for a new club site venue and I can understand the difficulty with this as our chapter membership covers such a wide area. However one wet evening back in November I decided to take up the challenge. After listening to a few of the committee members it was obvious that they would like to be around the Aztec area of Bristol if pos-sible or just off of the motorway junctions. With the help of local knowledge and Google off I set to test some beers! ….sorry places that may be suitable.

The problem was that our two previous venues the Ship and the Riverside really did set a high standard which was going to prove to be hard to beat. My search started at the Swan in Almonsbury, a good pub for food and a good car park. This I already knew but I was not sure on the internal layout of the venue as I had not visited it in a long time. I knew it used to have a skittle alley but the pub has had a couple of successive take overs in recent years and although I had drank in there I had never had a good look around.

Our club is achieving over 60 members per meeting now and at my count an average of 30 people eat at the events so seating, food, parking, prices and range of food and beers had to be a priority. Sadly the Swan was large enough overall but mis-shaped and not enough all in one seating available ……but would make a great natter night venue in the summer. So one pint down and off to the next…… This went on over irregular periods up until Christmas 2011. I had got two venues on the short list which may be possible. A lot of the hotels and golf courses either wanted to charge us for the room or did not have a good selection of beer and food. So places such as the Bristol Golf Club just off of Cribbs which had excellent rooms were ruled out.

What I did pick up on these excursions is how helpful all the landlords of the pubs we visited were to our cause and most of them were pig sick they could not accom-modate us.

The search ring moved out further and further; wrong

location, Mis-shaped too dear (this was a very common problem) until I found the Cross Hands at Old Sodbury which was famous for the Queen staying after snow had stopped her journey back to London one winter eve-ning. This really did tick all the boxes, good atmosphere, beer at £2.80 per pint and two meals for £9.95 plus a really extensive menu as well, excellent parking that was safe for the bikes, good location just a couple of miles from the M4 J18. As a bonus it had a car wash tucked in the corner so I dumped the car whilst I tested the venue…. Just £5.00 for a really good clean up must ask him about bikes! This venue had a large function hall which they charge for but I was offered the main dinning area

….whoopee it was massive and nicely pre-sented…..time for another beer! Upon this godsend I then tested the food ……and another beer …. Good job I had an assistant driver.

After assembling a short list from the 26 establishments visited it was time to report back to the Committee. Since then a natter night has been tested and the com-mittee have selected the Cross Hands for future meet-ings. I look forward to the summer nights out there and the extra long rides home from the countryside. I look forward to my next challenge !!!
