For starters, the event opens Wednesday afternoon rather than in the morning, and is not preceded by the Country Radio Hall of Fame event typically held Tuesday. That’s been moved to June. Morgan attributes the changes to hotel availability, and views the results as positive. “It’s just like in radio when you have limited time and have to edit,” he explains. “It’s tightened things up to where the best has remained on the schedule.” Seeing Stars: In addition to the keynote from entrepreneur and philanthropist Todd Wagner as covered in last week’s Country Aircheck Weekly (2/18), Morgan is particularly excited about this year’s artist panels. “How Three Become One: Lady An- tebellum” and “Keith Urban: Being Present” happen Thursday and Friday, respectively. “They’re megastars in our format,” he says. “The Lady A panel is really about taking three diverse, divergent creative types and building such a success story. That’s what we do in our work lives, right? We’ve got a whole lot of different creative types that we try to get together and move forward in one direc- tion. And the Keith Urban panel is going to be a very personal hour as he talks about all the things he juggles – writing, touring, recording, parenting and husbanding – and how he’s present in all those roles in his life. It’ll be a great message for a room full of people who multitask the hell out of their days. Typically artists talk about their songs and their new album. in the music and education world is unequaled,” says Brenner. “There are so many questions to be asked as he shares the wis-dom he has accrued over the years.” She says those include his thoughts on positive changes and challenges within the business, what role radio plays in the business plan for new artists and tips for GMs and PDs about multitasking and leading unique teams to success. Jacobs Media Dir./Digital and Social Strategies Lori Lewis will return for a second year to talk about social media usage.

“Social media isn’t about selling people or directing them on what to do,” says Brenner. “The heart of social is service – personalized acknowledgment. Helping people feel seen and heard. Lori will share examples of using social to give the fans a voice, making them feel like they matter, and in return reaping their loyalty.” Brenner says the talk will show pro-grammers how to turn passive fans into

active ones, which O’Malley adds is key. “Passionate fans want to connect with stations via as many platforms as possible, and social is certainly one of them,” he says. Lewis will offer new ideas for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and information on new platforms taking over in 2015. “Roadmap 2015” will reveal top line results from A&O&B’s annual listener study of more than 11,000 P1s in the U.S. and Canada. “We’ll cover their opinions on country music satisfaction, Country radio satisfaction, new artist discovery, radio usage and more,” says Brenner. “Plus we’ll find out how they’re using digital and social media platforms.” Two sessions not previously revealed address sales and on-air. “Max Media/Norfolk GM Dave Paulus is leading a session on

how the radio groups in his market got togeth-er to present a compelling case for radio to the advertising community,” says O’Malley. “And we’re adding an additional session for talent which includes a Q&A with a Second City Conservatory alum.” As always, the seminar will include live music, this year featuring Republic Nashville’s

OFF THE RECORD: JOsH DORR

RCA’s Josh Dorr puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KGWY/Gil-lette, WY. They played my favorites like Garth Brooks and Brooks & Dunn, and every now and then they’d throw in Wyo-ming’s Chris LeDoux. I was completely freaked out and nervous before my first station visit. I had hardly slept the night before. We didn’t pick the single until we were about halfway there. We all agreed on “Save

Your Breath” and then visited WUSY/Chattanooga, TN’s Gator Harrison. We went to his house and got to hang out with his wife and their little girl. It was a really good first visit for me. My band and I recently got snowed in, in New York City. We bought toy instruments and walked around in the snow like we were street performers, singing my single. The instruments sounded so terrible but it was fun. I am a big fan of the Whatchamacallit candy bar. I also love coconut water and the yellow Vitaminwater. That’s been my go-to lately, at truck stops. I would love to have dinner with Tom Petty or Bob Dylan – someone like that who’s lived and seen so much. I’d probably order a big ol’ steak. My music is lyric-driven country, but it has a lot of inspi-ration from all the different music I grew up listening to – a little bit of rock, little bit of R&B melodies. It’s country music with loud rock guitars and stadium anthemic choruses. My entire life is an impulse buy. My last ridiculous purchase was a slingshot. But you can fish with it. It’s like a bow fishing slingshot. It was way too much money and I never use it. I wish I had written Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love.” It’s resonated with me since I was a little kid. I’m a “love song” guy. The music and the arrangement of it is simple and really great. I listen to music everywhere I go. If I don’t have head-phones with me on the road, I will go to the nearest store and buy some as soon as possible. I feel like I’m buying headphones five times a month. Somewhere there’s a headphone fairy that goes into my suitcase and steals them.

Chart Chat Congrats to Thomas Rhett, George Briner and the Valory promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “Make Me Wan-na.” The song is the third chart-topper from Rhett’s debut album It Goes Like This. And kudos across the hall to Matthew Hargis and the Republic Nashville re-gional staff on landing 43 adds for Florida Georgia Line’s “Sippin’ On Fire,” topping this week’s board. Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporting Panel Changes: KVOO/Tulsa, WKHK/Richmond and WKLI/Albany, NY have been added, KTGX/Tulsa is no longer a reporter. KFGE/Lin-coln, NE has been added to the Activator panel. New weights for both panels are on page 13.

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire SoundScan’s new No. 1 country album is from a band with no Country radio airplay. How did Atlanta-based Round-er’s Blackberry Smoke snag the top spot, selling more than 19,000 copies of Holding All The Roses? Day-to-day mgr. Vec-tor’s Trey Wilson says they did it the old-fashioned way. “It’s a testament to them rallying the troops on the day of the release and having a great product to back it up,” he tells Coun-try Aircheck. “They’ve been together 14 years. It’s been a fan-by-fan build for them. This was the culmination of four great

releases before it. Palladia, AXS-TV and DirecTV have all been airing live footage of the band for a long time. You combine that with their 200 shows a year. It’s a good ex-ample of how you don’t necessarily need all the tools that are available to other artists right now to have a No. 1 record.” The band’s merchandise also plays a huge part in their success (see their online store here). “Brit

Mercury’s Canaan Smith discusses his most influential music.1. George Strait: He’s the King of Cool. He’s always had songs that meant some-thing, that had depth. He’s always been my hero. When I moved to Nashville I was wearing the pressed cowboy jeans, the hat and everything. I was trying to be like him. 2. Dierks Bentley: He’s another one of my heroes. “Settle For A Slowdown” is one of the best country songs of all time.

3. The Beatles: They’ve been a huge influence. Their early ‘60s tunes are my favorite. I love how catchy they are. They’re hook-y and leave you wanting more. 4. Poison And Wine, The Civil Wars: When I first heard that song I was on a ski trip with Brian Kelley and Tyler Hub-bard (Florida Georgia Line). We had partied earlier that night and somebody left the stereo going. I woke up in the middle of the night to this song. I was like, “What in the world is that?” I walked downstairs and sat in front of the stereo, taking in what I was hearing.5. Coldplay at Starwood Amphitheater, Nashville: I was totally blown away. That was the first show I’d seen where the production was as epic as it was. They would fly things out over the crowd. The lights were the newest technology. All of that paired with their songs made for a one-of-a-kind experience. It got my wheels turning for how I’d like to do things with my show.•Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Didn’t Ar-cade Fire win a bunch of Grammys?•”Important” music you just don’t get: Everybody really loves Bob Dylan. I respect that, but I’ve never been captivated.•Album you played incessantly: Eric Church’s Chief. Each song has its way of getting you. There are no throwaway lyrics. Great stories from start to finish.•Obscure or non-country song everyone should know: “Long White Line” by Sturgill Simpson. •Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Shania Twain. I think it’s the Mutt Lange production behind it all. I thought the Up! album in particular was the coolest-sounding thing I’d heard in forever. They were way ahead of their time.

Turner, our drummer, does all the designs,” he says. “We do it all in-house, including marketing and distribution. It’s become kind of a cult fan base. People are excited when they see other people in Blackberry Smoke shirts, hats and bandanas.” Wilson says they’re in the beginning stages of their Country radio plan but several stations have already expressed interest in three tracks – “Too High,” which has a video recently premiered by Vevo; “Living In The Song” and “Lay It All On Me.” Concord Music Group/Rounder’s SVP/Promo/Mktg Jill Weindorf is working the record in addition to consultant Skip Bishop. “I’m so glad to see them get some recognition and see all of this hard work pay off,” says Wilson. “They really do deserve it.” Reach Wilson here, Weindorf here and Bishop here.

so it’s really important for programmers to understand mornings,” says Edison Research President Larry Rosin, who’s delivering the CRS Research Presentation with colleague Megan Lazovick.

“Our goal is to provide people with a level of understanding of peoples’ behaviors in the morning; what they’re looking for, what they’re doing and when they’re doing it.” The data will show a particularly compet-itive landscape. “Radio people see ourselves as software people and tend to think about what comes out of the speakers – how to create great software, if you will,” Rosin says. “But I’ll talk at length about how radio has a

major hardware problem. For example, when you look at peoples’ bedrooms, they’re way more likely to have any number of other hardware there as compared to radio.” Television looms especially large. “People are way more likely to have a TV in their bedroom than a radio and I think those numbers would have been entirely flipped 25 years ago. The other things are of course smartphones, tablets and computers, but television is a major, major factor. A big part of the industry’s challenge is thinking about hardware solutions to compete with all of these things. “The overall story is that people have busy mornings and they have lot of things they care about and certain things they care less about,” Rosin continues. “Radio does a lot of things out of rote or in some cases for the wrong reasons that may not be in-sync with what people are looking for now. So we’ll be talking about how to synchronize what you’re doing with what the audience wants in the morning.” Eyes On The Road: New to CRS this year is an extended look at the future of our vehicles’ dashboards with Thursday’s “The Power of the Connected Car.” “We all recognize that the longevity of the radio industry is driven in large part by being relevant in the dashboard,” notes Morgan. “So having dialogue, visuals and experts who are reshaping what the dashboard is going to look like is important not just to Country radio, but radio in general.” Leading the conversation will be the C3 Group’s Chris Barker, whose company focuses on how technology is advancing in various forms of transportation. The group puts on a variety of connected-car conferences in the U.S. “Cars are being designed to bring a new level of content and services,” Barker explains. “Particularly, auto manufacturers are focused on streaming data, be it audio or mu-sic, and providing digital offerings like the ability to make e-com-

merce transactions, real-time navigation, traffic alerts and more. All the things that consumers have available on their phones now are making their way to the in-dash of cars. Think of your Android or iPhone. Car companies are working to design radio head units that can stream those operating systems. “Another thing we’ll talk about is audience demographics, how different generations are interfacing with their car and what they’re expected to want going forward,” Barker continues. “The in-dash unit is the central console now that will power content not just to the driver, but eventually through different screens behind the seats of the driver and front passenger as cars become full entertainment platforms. And we’re also going to show video on what some of these new technologies will look like.” Some of this will surely make radio nervous, but Barker has some words of encouragement. “Radio isn’t going away, but we are going to be building on top of that and looking for more ways to communicate with people in the vehicle,” he says. “Radio is going to play a very central role in that now and into the future.” Panelists will also address the safety issues associated with this new technology. “Each of the panelists are coming at this from how to enhance and transform the driving experience for drivers and passengers, but in a safe way,” Barker notes. “There’s a push, pull situation between consumers and manufacturers. People want more features in their cars and car-makers want to make sure it’s not creating a distracted driving situation.” Got It Covered: There are obviously many more notable panels, not the least of which is Thursday’s social strategy-minded “How to Move People in Order to Move The Needle.” Coca-Cola’s Christy Amador and the New Orleans Saints’ Alex Restrepo are among its panelists as industry vet Gregg Lindahl moderates. The session sets up “How to Speak in Your Brand’s Voice and Get Content Shared” and “Finding and Engaging Your Consumers in Real Time,” which Lindahl will moderate the following day. And Country Aircheck’s own Lon Helton will lead Thursday’s “State of the Music: When a Style Becomes a Movement,” among others. See the entire agenda, which includes a host of social, digital and tech, promotions and marketing, talent coaching, and pro-gramming and sales-geared offerings here. The agenda can also be found on the free and official CRS 2015 smartphone app pow-ered by Country Aircheck. Other features include a calendar to keep track of panels of interest, maps, photos, important messag-es, news and more. Get it for Android here and iPhone here.

Here are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporters and Activator reporters, based on audience estimates from the Spring 2014 Nielsen Audio ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of April-May-June 2014 AQH Persons. The weights are calcu-lated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing the adjusted AQHP by a number that is 10% of the leading Country station’s AQH (in this case WUSN/Chicago’s 28,530 adjusted AQHP and, for Activa-tors, WFRE/Frederick’s 12,120 adjusted AQHP.) This calculation assigns a weight for each panelist on a 1-10 scale. These new weights are effective with this week’s Mediabase Country chart as printed in Country Aircheck.
