Does it tackle this theme effectively?

    Frequently

askedquestionsWhat type of lm can we produce? This is up to you. We would like you to use your imagination and creativity. We would like you to consider different ways

of putting your lm together. Ultimately, it should have a clear story or message.

Are there any restrictions on the way we want to get our message across?Whilst we encourage you to be imaginative and creative, your lm will be judged, and possibly shown at the premiere, to

a mixed audience. Some of the people who will watch your project will have lost loved ones in road collisions. We would

like you to be sensitive to this and not to use graphic images of bodies and blood.

How can we send a strong message without using bodies and blood? You can very effectively send your message to the audience by portraying emotions and delivering a strong message.

Research actually shows that images of crashed cars and blood is not required to send a strong message.

What length should our lm be?Your lm should last no longer than ve minutes.

What format should the lm be in?Your nal lm should be provided to us in one of the following formats: MOV, WMV, AVI or MPEG4.

If we want to use music, can we use our own choice?Unfortunately, we must ask that you do not use music subject to copyright. For legal reasons, we will be unable to accept

submissions if they do. There is a good range of royalty-free music online, or you can be even more original by composing

your own. We would like to post a selection of the lms online, and will be unable to do this if they contain copyrighted

music. Please note that the use of copyright images is also not allowed.

Can we use any of the emergency services to lm?We are happy to accommodate any requests which involve the use of emergency services. We are working alongside

Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue, Northumberland Fire and Rescue, and North East Ambulance Service. If you would like

to use the police, re or ambulance in your lm, please ask. We will need at least two weeks notice to book them. Please

get in touch with us if you are considering this and we can discuss it with you.

Can we see the projects from last year?Yes. If you would like to view the nished projects from last years competition, email the team at

[email protected] and we will supply you with a link to download the videos.

However, please be creative and try not to copy!

That way, we can have a rich mixture of projects on the night.

    Notes for

teachersThank you for supporting Road Sense Common Sense 2014.

Here are some notes to guide you:

GroupsThe size of the group you choose to work on the project will depend on how you can facilitate the process of building

your chosen project. Group sizes last year varied from 5 to 20. We see ourselves and you, the teacher, very much as

the facilitators of this venture. We welcome the students in being the producers of their own project and it is their

imagination and creativity that we would like to embrace.

Learning outcomesIn addition to raising awareness of road safety issues, we would like to challenge students existing behaviour which may

put them at risk. This can range from dangerous driving on their behalf to being susceptible to peer pressure. We would

like to empower them to make sensible decisions and keep them safe.

Help with projectsWe will be on hand to advise you about the project and provide the students with any resources they need. We ask that

you give us at least two weeks notice to utilise operational emergency service staff and resources so we can arrange this.

We would also ask that the students are well prepared for this session and have a clear goal in mind of what they want

to achieve. We encourage you to keep in regular contact with us so the students can make the most of this opportunity.

Technical materialsUnfortunately we are unable to provide you with technical materials for your group to use, such as video cameras.

By taking responsibility for the construction of their projects the students will not only experience the value of this

responsibility, but also in working together as a team.

Ethical considerationsWe would ask that you approach your group at the start of the project and ask if any of them have been affected by the

issues they will explore. We would not like to unduly upset any of the students if, for example, they have lost a relative ina road collision before.

Finally, we would ask you to contact us at the earliest opportunity if you face

any issues which may affect the outcome of the project. We are on hand to

come and talk to the students and work with them along the way.
