DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN THIS DOCUMENT

Pedestrian

Road userList of categories that classify all persons who use roads, including drivers, passengers, riders and pedestrians.

Bicycle rider. Includes bicycle pillion passengers from 1980.

Any road crash occurring on a public road which resulted in the death of a road user within 30 days which directly or indirectly occurred due to vehicle movement.

Vehicle operator other than bicycle or motorcycle operator.

A person who is not a driver/rider or passenger in a vehicle at the time of the crash. May include person boarding or alighting from a vehicle.

Any person who, as a result of a road crash, dies within 30 days of the crash.

Motorcycle rider. Includes motorcycle pillion passenger from 1980.

Includes occupant of non-motor vehicle, such as horse drawn vehicle.

Occupant, other than driver, of motor vehicle. Includes pillion passengers of motorcycles and bicycles from 1950 to 1979.

It is based on data sourced from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

It contains national data relating to fatal road crashes, population, vehicle registrations and kilometres travelled from 1925 to the present.
