Road Closures and Special Event Clearways for New Years Eve 2018/New Years Day 2019 North Sydney Council
Information for
Cremorne Point, Neutral Bay & Kurraba Point
New Years Eve is the busiest night of the year in North Sydney with tens of thousands of people visiting our foreshore to view the fireworks. North Sydney Council works closely with NSW Police and other agencies to make the event safe for residents and visitors.
All foreshore parks and reserves are alcohol prohibited. There are various road closures and special event clearways in place.
This information is provided specifically for residents of Cremorne Point, Neutral Bay and Kurraba Point. Information on other areas in North Sydney, including Managed Access areas at Bradfield Park and Mary Booth Reserve can be found at: www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/nye
Further information on special event clearways and road closures in North Sydney and surrounds can be found at www.livetraffic.com
Cremorne Point – what you need to know
Small sun shelters can be used in the reserve during the day but must be taken down at dusk.
A food truck will be available from approximately 4pm and located near Cremorne Point Wharf.
Two banks of portable toilets will be available near the Cremorne Point Wharf – one on the grass on the lower level and the second in the reserve on the upper level.
Sydney Ferries has arranged for ferry pick-ups from Cremorne Point Wharf to Circular Quay after the midnight fireworks. This will not be until approximately 1am and there is limited ferry capacity.
Buses will cease running to Cremorne Point Wharf at 3pm.
For information about public transport timetables and arrangements visit www.transportnsw.info
Kurraba Point Reserve – what you need to know
Small sun shelters can be used in the reserve during the day but must be taken down at dusk.
Portable toilets will be provided on the lower level of Kurraba Point Reserve. There is no food vending available.
Going home after midnight– what you need to know
Following the midnight fireworks there are thousands of people using the same roads to exit and public transport options to get home.
Sydney Ferries has arranged for ferry pick-ups from Cremorne Point Wharf to Circular Quay after the midnight fireworks. This will not be until approximately 1am and there is limited ferry capacity.
Delays and long queues are expected, up to 3am in some places.
Guests of residents may experience long delays when they join the crowds departing from public parks and reserves. Guests who are driving should delay their departure time as roads do not reopen until at least 2am.
For information about public transport timetables and arrangements visit www.transportnsw.info
Managed Access SitesBlues Point Reserve is being trialled as a ticketed site this year and is sold out. Bradfield Park and Mary Booth Reserve are Managed Access sites. These areas are fenced with checkpoints in place for crowd control and bag checks for prohibited items.
If you plan to visit parks or friends in other parts of the North Sydney Council area, please check the information available at www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/nye or call 9936 8100 to request a brochure.
Alcohol restrictionsAlcohol prohibited areas
All foreshore parks and reserves will be alcohol prohibited, including Cremorne Point, Robertsons Point and Kurraba Point Reserves.
This means no alcohol can be taken into or consumed in these areas. NSW Police will be enforcing these restrictions.
Alcohol free zoneStreets south of Hodgson Ave, Cremorne Point are alcohol free.
In an alcohol free zone, unopened alcohol may be carried on the street to private property, but cannot be opened or consumed on the street. NSW Police will be enforcing these restrictions.
SAFETY INFORMATIONBe safe this NYE. Ensure balconies and building lifts are not overloaded and children are supervised at all times.
Pets can be very sensitive to the noise of fireworks and may panic. If you have pets, make sure you take special precautions during the fireworks display.
FAQs I’m having a party. Will my guests be able to access my property by car?
We recommend guests travel by public transport on NYE. If they are arriving by vehicle, check road closure times and the notes underneath them. Roads are closed to general traffic at 5pm.
Between 5pm and 8pm, drivers must present photo ID with a residential address within the road closure area to gain access. Therefore, unless you are in the car with your guest, they will not be able to enter once roads are closed to general traffic. After 8pm no vehicle access is allowed.
I’m having a party. Will my guests be able to bring alcohol?Guests can carry unopened alcohol into an alcohol free zone, but it cannot be opened or consumed on the street.
Is it ok for guests to leave if I see vehicles moving in my area?If guests are travelling by car we recommend they don’t leave before 2am. While you might see cars moving, there are many road closures throughout the area and it’s likely that vehicles will meet a road closure at another location and be stuck in traffic. NSW Police reopen roads as soon as possible (they want to go home too!)
What time should my guests leave to get public transport home?Extra train and bus services will operate, but as everybody leaves at the same time after the midnight fireworks there are delays and long queues. Travelling home later may be a good option. Make sure you plan your journey at www.transportnsw.info
Can taxis or Uber vehicles enter when a road is closed? No preferential treatment is given to taxis or other hire cars. They will not be able to access roads once they have closed.
