Feel your bedroom deco scheme has faded? Give it a little lovin’ with a new look. Firstly, clear the furniture and get painting – choose a punchy colour you adore

for the walls, like this fabulous blue inspired by the ocean, then revive cupboards with a bright white and new handles. For the rest of the room, update the window treatments, create your own artworks and install hanging bedside lamps. Finish with new bedding and it’s sweet dreams!

in your bedroom1. Paint a fresh new backdrop, then give your scheme a polished finish with drop pendants on each side of the bed – here, organic shapes beautifully detailed with woven, coated string. NeWspApeR ARtWORK Gather your supplies

n Newspaper (we used vintage sheets)

n Water-based paints in colours of choice (we used Jo Sonja’s Storm Blue, Transparent Magenta and Yellow Green)

n Picture frame with hanger, size to suit

You’ll also needPaintbrush; paint tray; thin cardboard in white (2 sheets, same size as chosen frame); glue stick; craft knife; cutting mat; metal ruler; wallpaper or other decorative paper (optional); double-sided tape

Here’s howstep 1 Cover your work surface in scrap paper to protect it from paint spills. Squeeze a small amount of 1 paint colour on paint tray.

Add drops of water to paint until it’s diluted well.

step 2 Using paintbrush, paint 1 face of newspaper with paint solution. The paint should be quite transparent, with newspaper print still visible. If not, add more drops of water to paint, then continue painting newspaper.

step 3 Repeat Steps 1-2 to paint other sections of newspaper with remaining 2 chosen colours. Let dry.

step 4 Rub glue stick on 1 face of 1 sheet of cardboard and stick newspaper on top, pressing it flat from centre of paper toward sides to avoid bubbles. Let dry.

step 5 Keeping in mind size of chosen frame, mark up

reverse side of cardboard into an even grid using metal ruler and a pencil. Our grid was made up of 5 x 5cm squares.

step 6 Using metal ruler and craft knife on cutting mat, cut along marked lines so you have a stack of squares. For a point of difference, you might also wish to mark up and cut out same size squares from wallpaper or other decorative paper.

step 7 Mark up and, using metal ruler and craft knife on cutting mat, trim remaining sheet of cardboard to same size as backing board of frame.

step 8 Roughly position cut squares on top of trimmed sheet of cardboard. Adjust positioning of squares until you are happy with the layout,

2. If you’ve come across a few interesting sheets of vintage newspaper, this crafty idea is for you! Framed and hung above the bed, or as a feature on any blank wall in your home, it’s low-budget art at its best.

allowing an even gap between squares. Hold frame over top of layout to ensure that it fits within your chosen frame. Adjust if necessary. Working 1 square at a time, apply short lengths of double-sided tape to reverse side of each cut square and stick in place on cardboard.

step 9 Once all squares are stuck in place, insert artwork into frame and secure backing board using fixings at back of frame. Your artwork is ready to hang!

step 10 Repeat process to make as many artworks as desired. We made 3 medium-sized works and 1 large work.
