Thecrophasbeenthrustintothecenteroftradewarbetweenthetwonations.Chinaslappedretaliatorytariffsof25percentonAmericanshipments,sendingbuyersfromtheAsiancountryrushingtoBrazilforsupplies. But even though the South Americancountry is the world's largest exporter, it's stillunlikelytomeetChina'svoraciousappetitealone.
Brazil'ssupplieswillstarttotightenbyOctober,aftermonthsofrecordshipments.That'salsojustaboutthetimethatU.S.cropgatheringisunderfullswing.With no other growers really exporting enough tosatisfyChina'sdemand,thenationwilllikelyeitherbuyfromtheU.S.orsufferthroughashortage.“We will start to see more business being done”betweentheU.S.andChina,saidMarkSchultz,chiefmarket analyst for Northstar Commodity inMinneapolis.“Itmaynevergettolevelsweenjoyed,butit'sgoingtobebetterthannone.”

There'salreadyevidence thatChina is stilldoingsomebuying fromtheU.S.ThebulkcarrierBetisdepartedGavilonGroupLLC'sexport terminal inKalama, Washington, for Shanghai on July 29,carrying the first cargo of American soybeansdestinedforChinainthreeweeks,accordingtoareport published by the U.S. Department ofAgriculture.
Tomeetitsdemand,Chinawilllikelyneedtoimportat least 10 million tons of U.S. soybeans, JiangBoheng,analystwithLuzhengFuturesCo.Ltd.,saidinatelephoneinterviewfromShandong.
Otheranalystspegthenumberevenhigher.PedroDejneka, a partner at Chicago-based MDCommodities, said that unless China reduces itsdemand for soybean crushing aggressively, thecountrymayimportatleast15milliontonsfromtheU.S.bytheendof2018.
Soy alternativesStill, therearesomesignsthatChina is lookingforalternatives to U.S. supplies, such as reducing itssoybeanuse.Thecountrycouldloweritsimportsbymorethan10milliontonsin2018throughmeasuresincludingusing low-proteindiet formula inanimalfeed, the official XinhuaNewsAgency reportedonAug.5.Thenationcouldalsoboostpurchasesofpalmkernel,sunflowerandrapeseedmealsinplaceofsoy,Xinhuasaid.
Chinacouldalsodrawfromits“significant”soybeanstockpiles instead of importing from the U.S.,according to Soren Schroder, the chief executiveofficerofagriculturegiantBungeLtd.
UnlesstheU.S.andChinacometoatraderesolution,theAsiancountry“willcontinuetobuythosebeansin Brazil,” Schroder said in a telephone interview.“Chinainanormalyearwouldtakeover20milliontonsofU.S.soybeansinthefourthandfirstquarter.ThatwillbeaholeinU.S.exportsthatwillbedifficulttofillwithotherbusiness.”
Butsuppliesfrominventorycanonlylastforsolong.High stockpiles, coupledwith ample imports from
Brazil between July and September, should keepsuppliessufficientthroughOctober,accordingtoareport by the China National Grain and OilsInformation Center. Chinese buyers have onlypurchased 30 percent of their needs forOctoberloading and half for September, according toCNGOIC,whichsaidthecountryrunstheriskofashortageinthefourthquarter.
“Chinawill buy at least some soybeans from theU.S.,” Karl Setzer, a market analyst for MaxYieldCooperativeinWestBend,Iowa,saidbyemail.“Itisverydifficult tosaywhenthiswillhappen.But ifthey do, it will likely be once the U.S. harvest istakingplaceasthatisusuallywhensoybeansarethecheapest.”

Government announces minimum support prices(MSPs) for 22 mandated crops and fair andremunerativeprice(FRP)forsugarcaneonthebasisof recommendations of the Commission forAgricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), afterconsidering the views of State Governments andCentral Ministries/Departments concerned andother relevant factors.Themandatedcropsare14crops of the kharif season viz. paddy, jowar, bajra,maize,ragi,arhar,moong,urad,groundnut-in-shell,soyabean, sunflower, sesamum, nigerseed andcotton; 6 rabi crops viz. wheat, barley, gram,masur(lentil),rapeseed/mustardandsafflowerandtwoothercommercialcropsviz. juteandcopra. agriculturalpolicies.RecentincreaseinMSPofKharifcropsatalevelofatleast150percentofthecostofproductionwillensureremunerativepricetofarmers.Governmenthas taken several steps to provide remunerativepricestofarmersfortheirproducewhichincludeimplementing e-National AgricultureMarket andframingmodelAgriculturalProduceandLivestockMarketing(PromotionandFacilitation)Act,2017,promotingFarmersProducerOrganization (FPO)and stepping up the levels of procurement forpulses and oilseeds through the Price SupportScheme(PSS).PSSisimplementedattherequestofthe state government concernedwhich agrees toexempt the procured commodities from levy ofmanditax&otherstateduties.Thebasicobjectivesof PSS are to provide remunerative prices to thegrowersfortheirproducewithaviewtoencouragehigherinvestmentandproductionandtosafeguardtheinterestoftheconsumersbymakingavailablesupplies at reasonable price with low cost ofintermediation. ThestudyconductedbyresearchersoftheUniversityofMissouriinColumbiatestedhowalterationsindietmayimpactresilienceinbonesinwoman,especiallythe effect of soy-based proteins were tested. ThestudywaspublishedinthejournalBoneReports.

Withthemonsoonarrivingattherighttime,theareaunder soybean has gone up by 10% this year to111.734 lakh hectare with farmers completingsowing operations in three-and-a-half weeks.FarmerscommencedsowingoperationsonJune15andcompletedthemonJuly10.Atrendoffarmersshowingpreferenceforsoybeanhasbeenseenthisseason after cotton crop was attacked by PinkBollwormlastyear.AccordingtodatagatheredbytheSoybeanProcessorsAssociationofIndia(Sopa),theall-Indiaareaunderacreagehasincreasedby10%.Lastyear,thetotalareaundersoybeanwas101.561lakhhectare.
DuringtheperiodfromAugust3-12,2018,twoSopateamsconductedafieldsurveyofsoybeanCropin23districts of Madhya Pradesh, 12 districts ofMaharashtra,and6districtsofRajasthan.DNPathak,executivedirector,Sopa,saidsincethecropisatsuchastage that itwouldbe toopremature togiveanyproduction estimates at this time except that thecondition is good and there are no major pest ordisease attacks.” Overall, the soybean crop is innormal condition and farmers are sprayinginsecticide at the right time, maintaining a goodcontrol over insects and diseases,” he said, addingthatweedsarealsoundercontrolbyinter-culturalpracticesandchemicaluses.
However,around5-10%lightsoilareasofMadhyaPradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have beenaffectedduetomoisturestressduringthefloweringandpodformationstage.Thiswillaffecttheyields,Pathakpointedout.InMaharashtra,inter-croppingwithredgramhasbeenseeninlargetracts.Duringthesurvey,somewaterstresswasseeninsmallareasin MP, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, causing poorvegetativegrowth.Thiswillhaveadverseaffectontheyields,thoughsmall,hesaid.However,rainshave
beenreportedafterthesurveyinalltheareasandthereislikelytobenofurtherdamage,headded.InIndore, Shajapur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani,Guna,AshokNagar,SagarandDamohdistrictsofMadhyaPradesh,therewasnorainfall for15-20daysinitiallyandthecropsufferedduetomoisturestress,affectingproductivity.
InsomepartsofJalna,Latur,Akola,Buldhana,BidandUshmanabaddistrictsofMaharashtra, therewasnorainfallfor15-20daysinitiallyandin10-15% light soil area, the crop suffered due tomoisture stress, affecting productivity. InRajasthanaswell, theoverallcropwassufferingfromwaterstressatthefloweringstagebecauseoflong dry spell. However, rains in August haveminimised the loss of productivity, Pathak said.Theareaundersoybean inMadhyaPradeshhasrisento54lakhhectarefrom50lakhhectare,ariseof7.98%overthepreviousyear.InMaharashtra,the area under cultivation rose to 38.692 lakhhectarefrom34.484lakhhectare,a12.20%riseoverthepreviousyear.
Last year, after cotton was infested by pinkbollworm, sowing of soybean saw a substantialincreaseinMaharashtra.InRajasthanaswell,thearearoseto10,455lakhhectareasagainst9.245lakhhectare,a13%riseoverlastseason.ForthisKharifseason,thecentralgovernmenthasraisedtheMinimumSupportPrice(MSP)oftheoilseedto`3,399perquintal,from`3,050aquintallastyear.Althoughthehikeintheminimumsupportprice(MSP)ofcottonforthekharif2018seasonwas2.5timesthatofsoybeanbutfarmersinseveralkeycottongrowingregionsappeartohavemigratedtothe oilseed, finding it potentially moreremunerative. Pathak pointed out that sincesoybean and cotton are competing crops in thekharif season, farmerswill obviously prefer theonewhichwillgivethemhigherreturns.

Dairy Processing & Infrastructure Development Fund to benefit 95 lakh farmers Scheme to create additional milk processing capacity of 126 lakh litre per day, milk drying capacity of 210 MT per day, milk chilling capacity of 140 lakh litre per day: Shri Singh Vast opportunities exist today for dairyentrepreneurs and in order to concretize theseopportunitiesandhelpdouble the incomeofdairyfarmers,Rs51,077croreisneededtooperationalizetheNationalActionPlan(Vision-2024),MinisterofAgricultureandFarmers'WelfareShriRadhaMohanSingh said at the inauguration ceremony of DairyProcessing & Infrastructure Development Fund(DIDF)inNewDelhitoday.ShriSinghsaidthatasaresultoftheannouncementofUnionBudget2017-18,theDepartmentofAnimalHusbandry,DairyingandFisheries(DADF)startedtheDairyProcessing&Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF) with anoutlay of Rs 10881 crore. Under this, the firstinstallment of Rs 440 crore is being given to theNationalDairyDevelopmentBoard(NDDB)today.TheUnionAgricultureMinister said thatwith thisscheme,95,00,000farmersinabout50,000villageswillbebenefitted.Inadditiontothis,manyskilled,semi-skilled and unskilled workers will getemployment,directlyandindirectly.Additionalmilkprocessing capacity of 126 lakh litre per day,milkdrying capacity of 210 MT per day, milk chilling
capacityof140lakhlitreperdayshallbecreated.Under this scheme, milk cooperatives will beprovided financial assistanceofRs8004crore intheformofaloanat6.5%interest,whichwillbereimbursed over a period of 10 years. Thegovernmenthasalsogivenaprovisionofinterestsubsidy on loans. Till now, 15 sub-projects withtotal approved outlay of Rs 1148.61 crorepertainingtoStatesnamely,Karnataka(Rs.776.39crore-5sub-projects),Punjab(Rs.318.01crores-4sub-projects)andHaryana(Rs.54.21crore-6sub-projects)havebeensanctionedsofar.Shri Singh informed that implementation of theWorld Bank-funded National Dairy Plan Phase-IschemeisalsobeingdonebytheNDDBthroughthestategovernment'scooperativemilkorganizations/milk federations. The government is nowimplementing this scheme in 18 states from theearlier 14 states. On the other hand, theimplementation of the National Programme forDairyDevelopment (NPDD) is beingdoneby thestate's cooperative/milk federations. Under thisscheme,anassistanceofRs560.46crorein2014-18wasgiven for thedevelopmentof cooperativemilkcommittees,incentivestoincreasethenumberof milk producers and increase processing andrefrigerationcapacity.
