We welcome two world-class soloists – Ia Bousfield (trombone) and David Childs (euphonium) – seven leading bands, including the National Champions – Foden’s Band – and The International Staff Band of The Salvatio Army, as well as Foden’s Youth Band and RNCM’s own outstanding brass bands and ensembles. We’re thrilled to welcome back virtuoso artist Evelyn Glennie who will be performing with Trio HLK in the evening concert and also presenting a clinic with the group during the day. Other visiting artists include Pete Lockett, Peter Vulperhorst, Neal Wilkinson and Graham Johns, who all offer playing tips advice and insight into their areas of expertise. THE LOST WORDSSPELL SONGS

Singing nature back to life through the power of music, poetry, art and magic…

Those already familiar with The Lost Words by author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris, will know it as a work full of wildness, beauty and power. It is a place where poems become spells or incantations, and where art makes magic.

The Lost Words began as a response to the removal of everyday nature words from a widely used children’s dictionary. But it then grew to become a much broader protest at the loss of the natural world around us, as well as a celebration of the creatures and plants with which we share our lives.

Commissioned by Folk by the Oak, The Lost Words: Spell Songs brings together eight remarkable musicians - Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Kerry Andrew, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux - whose music already engages deeply with landscape and nature, to respond to the creatures, art and language of The Lost Words. And as part of the performance, Jackie Morris will create live illustrations alongside the musicians. Tickets £20

Mario returns to play a fully-fledged show with our students and they couldn’t be happier. This is the first time we have welcomed a guest vocalist with the Session Orchestra and Mario’s credentials are impressive. As a student at Berklee, he was part of the award-winning a cappella group, Pitch Slapped. In season 12 of American Idol, he was Mariah Carey’s favourite. I wish I could conduct the first performance 50 years after my death.’ The emotional scope of the work is indeed huge. In fact, Herbert von Karajan once said that when you hear the piece: ‘you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.’

Alongside his art, science and inventions, Leonardo was himself a musician, he invented a musical instrument - the viola organista – and, in his writings, he described music as ‘shaping the invisible’.

Introduced by Professor Martin Kemp, this immersive concert with projections matches Da Vinci’s iconic art with vocal masterworks, illuminating the images through the prism of music.

2019 is also the 50th anniversary of more recent scientific endeavours, the Moon landing and Concorde’s first flight. Shaping the invisible culminates in a new commission on a theme of Leonardo and scientific endeavour with poetry by Gillian Clarke and music by Adrian Williams.

This is the first performance of this new project by I Fagiolini, an ensemble with a reputation for pioneering live events. Tickets £18 / students/under-18s £5

This new RNCM Opera production is set during the First World War, and we see the Pilgrim as a deserter who leaves his fellow soldiers behind to embark on a quest for better things.

Inspired by John Bunyan’s text (Vaughan Williams actually kept a copy of the book with him while he served in the trenches) the composer turned the 1678 religious allegory into a universal tale of spirituality moving beyond the confines of Christianity. However, The Pilgrim’s Progress unashamedly sides with the Pilgrim in stressing the righteousness of his journey.

This unconventional piece (Vaughan Williams called it a ‘morality’ rather than an opera) is the culmination of the composer’s 45-year musical journey, the ultimate expression of the wide variety of his musical style, exhibiting fabulous transparency of orchestration and a luminous sound. It is spiritual rather than religious and very uplifting, focussing on the light rather than the dark. We see the two sides of Vaughan Williams – the gentle lyricism of his pastoral style and his darker side that lived with the horrors of war. It is a defining work for the composer - a coherent time-lapse of his music.

This production will be sung in English with surtitles.

HAUSCHKARenowned pianist and Oscar-nominated film composer Hauschka returns to the RNCM to perform his new recording, A Different Forest. His style changes with every album he releases and this time, he does away with his customary instrumental preparations to return to the pure piano.

The central theme of the album is the experience of nature as the basis for his understanding of life and the composition of music. And for Hauschka, the concept of nature is epitomised by the image of a forest.

Hauschka has had a productive decade, working on projects in the fields of theatre, dance and classical ensemble works. In recent years, he has built a prolific career writing scores for films, including his soundtrack for the 2016 hit Lion, scored in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran. This year, he also wrote the music for the new US mini-series Patrick Melrose, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

The album was the first release on Richard Branson’s fledgling label, Virgin Records. It went on to sell 30 million copies and became the soundtrack to the cult classic film, The Exorcist.
