Course Description

This course is open:

- To inactive RN's reactivating their FL license

- To nursing candidates who have not passed the NCLEX exam after three

consecutive attempts.

- To nursing candidates who want a Review Course to bolster their confidence

prior to taking the NCLEX-RN exam

- To nursing candidates who need a refresher course after passing the NCLEX

exam that may be applying for Florida licensure by endorsement from another

state

Applicants required to take a remedial course will need to contact the Board Office at

(850) 245-4125, ext. 3615 and request a letter of authorization prior to enrollment.

The Nursing Remedial/Refresher Course is a theory and clinical experience designed to

assist the student in applying the nursing process and other essential skills to the care of

clients experiencing common health alterations. The course focuses on the nurse

attempting to pass the NCLEX and/or the nurse who desires to refresh her skills and

Page 3: RN Remedial/ Refresher Course · intervention session is to develop and implement an intervention program to help students learn new ways to save and manage time. NOTE:

knowledge. Clinical emphasis is placed on the management of clients in both acute and

long term care. Students are required to complete all components of this course.

The purpose of this course is to assist nurses to pass the NCLEX examination and refresh

nursing skills.

Contact Hours:

90 hours of didactic / 13 classroom days

96 hours of clinical (24 hours in long term care) / 12 days of clinical practice.

In order to receive a certificate of completion for the didactic portion of the course a

student must achieve a passing score of at least 75% on at least one of three offered

NCLEX exams and pass a Math exam with at least 90%. A student cannot pass on to the

clinical portion without passing the didactic portion first. A failure in the didactic portion

will require the student to re- take the course at the student’s expense.

The clinical experiences are graded on a pass/fail basis. If your assignment is late it is a

failed grade for that week. Two failed grades for assignments will result in clinical failure

and will require the student to retake the class at the student’s own expense.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, the student should function as providers of care, managers of care, and

members within the discipline of nursing as they:

1. Integrate the nursing process as a framework for the management of care of clients

and families. The student will be able to collect data and assess the client and

family, analyze the data, form a nursing diagnosis, develop and implement a nursing

plan of care with goals and outcome criteria, evaluate the plan of care, and make

changes to the plan of care as needed to restore the health of the client or to provide

the client with respectable end of life care.

2. Apply organizational and interpersonal communication strategies in managing the

care of clients, families, and other health care workers. This includes effectively

reporting and recording patient information and plan of care and integrating teaching

and learning strategies for client and family education.

3. Integrate cultural, spiritual, psychological, and developmental influences when

managing client care.

4. Integrate the principals of pharmacology safely and competently when providing

client care. This includes being knowledgeable of the medication/classification,

(brand & generic names, Route, Dose and Times) mechanism of action, side effects,

adverse reactions, and nursing implications for your client receiving this medication,

precautions of commonly prescribed medications as well as safe administration of

oral, parenteral, and intravenous medications, utilizing the six rights of medication

administration and adhering to two patient identifiers before administration.

Interpret lab values and the significance of altered values as they relate to a client’s

condition/diagnosis.

5. Integrate the principles of safety when providing care to clients and families.

6. Incorporate the principles of nutrition for maintaining optimal healthcare for clients

and families.

7. Value the legal, ethical, and professional parameters when managing client care.

8. Apply concepts of leadership, autonomy and management to the practice of

professional nursing.

9. Utilize the knowledge and skill to practice independently and collaboratively with

other health professions.

Clinical Rotation The purpose of this course is to provide the student or nurse with the necessary knowledge to care for clients with disorders and diseases of all the systems of the body. Clinical opportunities within medical and surgical acute care settings will be provided. The nurse’s role in assisting with the client care plan and the importance of clear, concise observation, reporting and documentation is stressed. The importance of maintaining the nutritional needs of the clients will be learned in the classroom and applied in the clinical setting. Medication theory will be learned in the classroom and applied to practice in the clinical setting in a progressive manner. An emphasis on a client centered holistic approach to nursing care will be stressed at all times, also to involve the client and family in education if applicable. Learning Objectives

1. Identify basic needs of clients and apply components of the nursing process to develop a plan of care to meet those needs.

2. Identify nursing care that contributes to the enhancement of the health care delivery setting and protects clients and health care in collaboration with the healthcare team members in a protective safe environment as related to, intravenous therapy, the surgical client, and medication administration, the study of body systems and related disease processes within the nurse’s scope of practice.

3. Perform/Demonstrate intermediate and advanced skills upon availability. These skills may include: administering medications, monitoring intravenous therapies, reducing the development of complications related to treatments, procedures or existing conditions, and providing care in clients with acute, chronic, or life-threatening health conditions within the nurse’s scope of practice.

4. Discuss client’s ability to cope, adapt and problem solve health related events. 5. Identify/Demonstrate safety and infection control procedures to protect clients and

health care personnel. 6. Use reflective and critical thinking skills using Maslow’s Hierarch of Human Needs

and Erickson’s Stages of Development to implement the nursing process. 7. Identify the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of a nurse as a member

of the health care team in a variety of health care settings. 8. Demonstrate the use of the “six rights” of medication administration 9. Administer medications to assigned clients, after dosages are verified by clinical

instructor with 100% accuracy.. 10. Demonstrate attitudes and behaviors of caring in nursing. 11. Illustrate documentation of all aspects of the nursing process for a client. 12. Use the scientific rationale necessary to meet the basic physical, psychosocial and cultural needs of all clients based on evidence-based practice 13. Plan and justify care for two or more assigned clients. 14.State the rationale for all aspects of care administered to clients including laboratory, nutritional and medication order. 15. Demonstrate effective patient and family teaching and counseling

Page 16: RN Remedial/ Refresher Course · intervention session is to develop and implement an intervention program to help students learn new ways to save and manage time. NOTE:

Pre or Post Conference Guidelines

Pre-Conference Prior to the beginning of client care, a clinical preconference will be held. The time and location of the preconference is at the discretion of the clinical instructor. Each student will be assigned a client/clients as their clinical assignment. The pre-conference is intended to be brief. The clinical instructor will assist in identifying care priorities, learning opportunities and organizational needs. Post-Conference Post conferences are intended to discuss nursing care for the benefit of all the students and to share ideas. Nursing care plans for each client may also be chosen for discussion. The location and time for clinical post conference will be scheduled by the clinical instructor. The clinical instructor will facilitate the post conference discussion. Each student is expected to participate in evaluating the learning experiences. The presentation of special topics may be addressed at this time.

Rotation

Clinicals will be held every Thursday and Friday for 6 weeks. Each student will be given an individual clinical rotation schedule. Assignment due dates will be announced by the clinical instructor. Care plans will be expected in the acute and long term care facilities weekly and a site report will be due after an observational clinical site experience. Clinical data and/or assessments must be completed each day the student is in the acute or long term care setting. The clinical experiences are graded on a pass/fail basis. If your assignment is late it is a failed grade for that week. Two failed grades for assignments will result in clinical failure and will require the student to retake the class at the student’s own expense
