HOSTING THE FROZEN FOURThe NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee has chosen the city of Pittsburgh as the site of the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four with Robert Morris Univer-sity serving as the host institution in conjunction with VisitPittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Penguins. CONSOL Energy Center will host the event on April 11-13, 2013 with the event marking first NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship event held in the state of Pennsylvania. It will be the first major team sport in NCAA history to conduct its national championship in the city of Pittsburgh.

BOBBY MO BROSThe Robert Morris hockey team joined forces with the RMU men’s lacrosse team to raise money and awareness for men’s cancer during the month of November. During the month, members of both squads grew and sported moustaches as a part of “Movember” and raised nearly $15,000. Spear-heading the movement was the news that former captain Chris Kushneriuk had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The Robert Morris hockey team will continue their fundraising efforts throughout the season in support of Kushneriuk and his cur-rent battle.

SCOUTING AIR FORCEThe Air Force Falcons are 9-9-5 in the 2012-2013 season with a 7-5-3 record against Atlantic Hockey opponents. Air Force is averaging 3.1 goals per game while allowing their opponents to score an average of 2.8 goals per game. The Falcons have scored on 13 of their 79 power plays (16.5 percent) while they have successfully killed 58 of their 70 penalties (12 goals allowed, 82.9 success rate). Three Falcon skaters lead the team each tallying 20 points so far in the season. Senior Stephen Carew leads the Fal-cons with ten goals this season. Sophomore Cole Gunner’s 15 assists lead the Air Force squad. Junior goaltender Jason Torf has seen the majority of the action in the net for Air Force. Torf has a record of 9-9-5 with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.

LAST TIME OUT VS. THE FALCONSWhen RMU and Air Force first met this season, the game was the home-opener for the Colonials back in October. The Falcons would open the scoring in the final five minutes of the first period with a power-play goal before netting a second power-play goal in the second period to make the score 2-0. With just over five minutes remaining in the third period, David Friedmann would net the first goal for Robert Morris to bring the Colonials within a goal of tying the game. Two empty-net goals from the Falcons in the final two minutes of regulation would make the final score 4-1 in favor of Air Force.

PLAYING THE BESTRobert Morris has beaten a ranked opponent twelve times during the duration of the hockey program. The shutout of #18-ranked Quinnipiac this season marked the first shutout of a ranked opponent in program history. The Colonials won their second game against a ranked opponent this season when they shut out #5-ranked Miami in the champion-ship game of the Three Rivers Classic. The last time RMU won two games against ranked opponents in the same season was during the 2009-2010 season. In the nine years of the program, Robert Morris has won multiple games against ranked opponents in four of those nine seasons. Against teams ranked in the top five, Robert Morris is 5-5-0 including a 3-1-0 record in 2009-2010 when the Colonials swept #1 Miami in a home-and-home series and knocked off CHA-rival Bemidji State when the Beavers were ranked #5 in the nation. All time, Robert Morris is 12-22-1 against ranked opponents.

KRUSHING CANCERFormer Robert Morris Colonial captain Chris Kushneriuk is often remembered as a player that would put his teammates before himself. After the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, Kushneriuk got the news that he had cancer. The native of Ottawa, Ontario is currently receiving treatment in Indianapolis, Indiana. Along with the men’s hockey team at Robert Morris, the Wheeling Nail-ers and Bakersfield Condors have also contributed fundraising efforts to Kushneriuk’s cause. At the remaining home games, the team will be selling wristbands and shirts to help RMU Krush Cancer.

NO PLACE LIKE HOMERobert Morris was 11-6-2 at home during the 2011-2012 season. Since the Colonials have joined Atlan-tic Hockey, Robert Morris is 22-11-6 on home ice. The Colonials have had only two seasons in which they have been under .500 at home, the 2004-2005 season and the 2009-2010 season. So far this sea-son, RMU has gone 2-3-1 with 8 more home games remaining before the AHA playoffs begin in March.

SHOT SELECTIONRobert Morris is averaging 31.9 shots on goal per game. When the Colonials are held to under 30 shots per game the team has a record of 7-3-0. When getting the puck on net more than 30 times, the Colonials are 5-4-2.

QUICK STARTSThe Colonials have registered a goal within the first five minutes of a period on 18 different occasions in 12 of the team’s 21 games. In games when the Co-lonials have scored an early goal in a period, RMU is 8-3-1.

ROAD WOESRobert Morris is just below .500 on the road since the team joined the Atlantic Hockey Association with a record of 21-22-6 as the squad plays in its third season as a member of the AHA. The Colonials have never had a winning record on the road, but this season RMU is currently 8-4-1 with five road contests remaining before the start of the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs in March. The most prolific of the seven road victories this season came in the opening weekend of play as the Colonials shut out a nationally ranked Quinnipiac team. The Colonials also picked up their first ever win at RIT and the first win on the road against Canisius since the 2006-2007 season. The team then proceeded to take three of four points from Atlantic Hockey foe Holy Cross at the end of November. The most re-cent road victories came as the Colonials took down a pair of future Big Ten members in Ohio State and Penn State. RMU skated in to Columbus, Ohio and took down the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 3-2 on Dec. 7. and then went to Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions by a score of 3-2 as well. Robert Morris started the new year with a split on the road at Army. Coming in as the 19th-ranked team in the nation, RMU would drop a game that aired nation-ally on the CBS Sports Network before claiming a victory the following night. Most recently, Robert Morris split a weekend series with American Inter-national.

FLIPPING THE SWITCHThis season, the Colonials have scored four or more goals in 10 of the team’s 21 games. Most recently, the Colonials put up five goals against American International on Jan. 19 in a 5-4 victory. Averaging 2.9 goals per game, Robert Morris has a record of 9-1-0 when scoring four or more goals. The team’s only loss came against Bentley on Nov. 3 in a 4-5 de-feat. Since the Colonials joined the AHA, the team has only lost three times when scoring four or more goals.

SEEING A LOT OF RUBBERCommon thought would suggest that the more shots an opponent gets on a goaltender, the better chance of success they have. This season, Robert Morris has debunked that theory. When a Colonial goaltender has faced 40 or more shots, RMU has a record of 6-0-1. When facing less than 40 shots, Robert Morris is 6-7-1. Three of the four shutouts posted by RMU netminders this season have come while making at least 40 seaves.

NEW YEAR, NEW PROBLEMSSince Robert Morris joined the Atlantic Hockey As-sociation, the Colonials are 17-20-6 in the months of January, February, and March. This season, RMU is 3-3-0 since the new year. Out of the three months, the Colonials have played their best hockey in Feb-ruary when the team has gone 6-6-3 in the first two years of their AHA membership.

SCORING LINEPut together for the first time on Jan. 5, the top line of Wydo-Hervato-Brace has paid off for Robert Morris in the five games that the trio has skated to-gether. In those three games, the Colonials have a record of 3-2-0 as the line has produced 17 points. The trio has netted eight goals and dished out nine assists. The line has capitalized on their chances, pocketing three short-handed goals and two game-winning goal as well.

SPECIAL TEAMSWins often come with good special teams play. This season, Robert Morris is 7-1-1 when record-ing either a power-play or short-handed goal. In three games this year the Colonials have scored a goal with both special team units. Of the six short-handed goals, senior Adam Brace has netted three of them. Seven different players have scored the Colonials’ eight power-play goals this season. When scoring a short-handed goal, Robert Morris is 4-1-0 and the team holds a record of 6-0-1 when scoring on the power play.

BOUNCING BACKWhile Robert Morris has lost seven games so far during the season, the team has never suffed a los-ing streak of any length. The Colonials are 7-0-0 after suffering a defeat and have outscored oppo-nents 30-13 in the game following a loss.

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAULRobert Morris we play its fifth consecutive week of hockey that began with the inaugural Three Riv-ers Classic at the end of December. The two games against Air Force are a part of ten straight weeks that the Colonials will play at least two games. The stretch of games will take the team to the conclu-sion of the regular season and in to the Atlantic Hockey playoffs.

FIRST ON THE BOARDIt is often said that the first goal scored is the big-gest goal of the game. The Colonials have scored that first goal in ten games this season. When do-ing so, RMU has gone undefeated with a record of 9-0-1. When Robert Morris allows the opponent to score first, the team is 3-7-1.

ONE STEP AHEADThe Colonials are dangerous when playing with the lead. This season, Robert Morris is 7-0-1 when leading after the first period and 8-0-0 when lead-ing after two periods of play. Since the move to the Atlantic Hockey Association before the 2010-2011 season, RMU is 25-4-3 when holding a first period lead and 36-1-3 when holding a lead after two pe-riods. The last loss suffered by the Colonials when holding the lead after two periods came against Bentley on Jan. 6, 2012.

KEEPING IT CLOSEOne-goal games are always exciting, especially for the fans. This season, Robert Morris has been in-volved in eight one-goal games and the team has been victorious in six of those games. The squad has won the only two-goal game they were involved in this season as well.

WEEKLY HONORSSix different Colonials have received weekly honors from the Atlantic Hockey Association during the 2012-2013 season. Most recently, on Dec. 31, a pair of Colonials received honors for their performance in the Three Rivers Classic. senior goaltender Er-ice Levine was named Player and Goaltender of the Week after his two-day, 99-save performance. The Goaltender of the Week Award was Levine’s third of the season. Freshman Brandon Denham was named Co-Rookie of the Week after earning his first career goal in the 1-0 championship vic-tory over nationally ranked Miami University. Eric Levine was named Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 10. Levine turned in a 79-save weekend performance as a win and a tie against Ohio State extended the Colonials’ unbeat-en streak to four games. Levine’s award marked the second consecutive week that a Robert Mor-ris student-athlete earned a weekly accolade from Atlantic Hockey. Prior to Levine’s honor, freshman forward David Friedmann was named the Rookie of the Week on Dec. 3 after his two-point performance against Holy Cross in which he returned to game ac-tion for the first time since Nov. 2. Friedmann was the second RMU freshman to earn Rookie of the Week honors as goaltender Terry Shafer earned the honor on Nov. 12 after he picked up his first career win and shutout as the Colonials picked up their first victory at Canisius since 2006. Line mates Zach Hervato and Jeff Jones earned Co-Players of the Week on Oct. 29 after their performances led Robert Morris to its first victory at RIT in program history. Hervato would contribute one goal and three assists while Jones would add a goal and two assists in the victory over the Tigers. The first Colo-nial to earn a weekly honor was Levine when he was named Goaltender of the Week on Oct. 15 after his 48-save shutout of #18 ranked Quinnipiac.

ROCK SOLIDSenior Eric Levine inhereted the starting position from 2012 graduate Brooks Ostergard and stepped into his new role quickly. Coming into the season, Levine had seen action in 37 games while playing in no more than thirteen games in a single season. In his second start of the season, Levine would record the program’s first shutout of a ranked opponent with a 48-save performance against #18 ranked Quinnipiac on Oct. 14. The 48-save effort ranked as the fourth most saves by a Colonial goaltender. Levine holds four of the top five single-save per-formances including a career and program high 58 saves. Levine posted back-to-back shutout in the inaugural Three Rivers Classic as he blanked Penn State while seeing 48 shots and #5 ranked Miami University the following evening by stopping all 51 shots he faced. Levine’s career goals against aver-age of 2.64 and his career save percentage of .928 both are program records. Levine has played in 55 career games and has a record of 22-15-9 with 1,677 saves and four shutouts.

LEVINE SURPASSES 1,500 SAVESSenior goaltender Eric Levine became the third goal-tender in school history to reach the 1,500-saves as he reached the milestone during the game against Army on January 4, 2013. Averaging 30.49 saves per game over his career, could have a shot to reach 2,000 saves by the end of the season. Including playoffs, the Colonials have a minimum of 15 games remaining and at his current pace Levine would end the season with 2,134 saves. Before Levine reached 1,500 saves, the most recent goaltender to reach the mark was Brooks Ostergard as he fin-ished his career with 2,776 saves, the second most in program history. Levine currently ranks third on the career saves list. Christian Boucher holds the career saves record with 3,244 saves over his four-year career that started with Robert Morris’ first year of hockey in 2004.

50 GOALS, 100 POINTSSenior Adam Brace enters the weekend with 95 ca-reer points including 41 goals and 54 assists. aver-aging a point-a-game (1.00) and a goal almost every two games (0.43 goals per game) this season, Brace could reach both milestones by the end of the sea-son. With a minimum of 15 games remaining, Brace would fall just three goals shy of reaching the 50-goal plateau at his current pace. Brace would need five games to break the 100-point mark on his cur-rent pace. His current pace would have him break the milestone on Feb. 5 at home against Mercyhurst in the third of five-consecutive home games to start the month of February.

CLASSY DEFENSEMANSenior defenseman Brendan Jamison was one of twenty student-athletes named as a nominee for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. The award recognizes achievements on and off the ice. A na-tive of Pittsburgh, Jamison is a nominee field that will be cut down to ten finalists midway through the regular season. The winner will be chosen through a nationwide vote by media, coaches, and fans. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award fo-cuses on student-athletes that use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact in their commu-nities. As the team captain for the 2012-13 season, Jamison boasts a cumulative grade-point average of 3.70 and has been named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team in the two seasons that Robert Morris has been a member while majoring in both finance and accounting. In the community, Jamison and the entire Robert Morris team work with mul-tiple youth programs in the area.

MEN OF THE CENTURYRobert Morris has three players who have com-peted in at least 100 games during their NCAA ca-reer. Both Adam Brace and Brendan Jamison have each played in 118 contests during their careers. Brace played in 33 of those game during his fresh-man season with Canisius before transferring to Robert Morris. The most recent Colonial to surpass the century mark was Zach Hervato as he played in game 100 against Niagara on Nov. 17. With a mini-mum of 15 games remaining in the season for the Colonials, two more student-athletes could join the century club. Junior forward Colin South has seen action in 87 games while senior assistant captain Tyler Hinds has played in 85 career contests.
