(P4) Mr Raju had some money at first. After spending $250 on a mobile phone and $365 on a television set, he had $560

left. How much money did Mr Raju have at first?

$560 + $365 = $925$925 + $250 = $1175

Mr Raju had $1175 at first.

Check$1175 − $250 = $925$925 − $365 = $560 (√ )

(P5) Alex, Ben, Colin and Don went to a jungle. Each boy found a rattan. Alex’s rattan was twice as long as Ben’s. Ben’s rattan was 12 cm shorter

than Colin’s. Colin’s rattan was 15 cm longer than Don’s. Don’s rattan was 16 cm long. How long was Alex’s rattan?

16 + 15 = 31 (Colin)

31 − 12 = 19 (Ben)

19 × 2 = 38 cm (Alex)

Alex’s rattan was 38 cm long.

Check 38 ÷ 2 = 19 19 + 12 = 31 31 − 15 = 16 cm (√ )

Let’s try togetherThere were some cherry and mint sweets on a plate. After 6 mint

sweets were taken away by Amelia, 8 cherry sweets were put back on the plate. After another 10 sweets were taken away by Jill, 4 mint

sweets were put back. If there were 20 sweets left on the plate, how many sweets were there on the plate at first?

20 − 4 = 16

16 + 10 = 26

26 − 8 = 18

18 + 6 = 24

There were 24 sweets at first.

Check

24 − 6 = 18

18 + 8 = 26

26 − 10 = 16

16 + 4 = 20 sweets (√ )

A rectangular block X was cut along the dotted line into two smaller rectangular blocks of equal height, Y and Z, as shown below. The volume of Z is 1470 cm³ more than that of Y.a) What is the height of each block?

2016 PSLE Paper 2 Q15

Volume of Z – Volume of Y = 1470

15 × 10 × H – 8 × 10 × H = 1470

150H – 80H = 1470

70H = 1470

H = 1470 ÷ 70 = 21 cm
