The first edition of The Local Rag was well received by the Riverton Community. A small number of hard copies left at the Post Office and The Bakehouse Emporium went very quickly, it is difficult to gauge the success of the online version. We understand that not everyone has the internet, and if they do, they may not have Facebook, but this edition will also be posted on our new Website at riverton.sa.au . There is no longer an option to print and hand deliver the newsletter to every home as there was in the past, and we hope you will understand that although we do have a wonderful volunteer support in our town, they are spreading themselves very thinly these days. If you would like a direct email or a hard copy posted directly to you please contact RCMC Secretary Cassy Griffiths for this to be organised, details are on the last page. It takes a lot of time and effort to conjure up a local newsletter, and those involved are happy to do it, but only if there is community input, and an indication that it is being read. Riverton Memorial Swimming Pool Update Recently our Soldiers Memorial Swimming Pool was at risk of being closed. After intense lobbying by concerned community members, the council voted in favour of the YMCA being responsible for management of our pool for a period of three years, on condition of community support in regard to the general maintenance and area cleanliness. (grass cutting, weeding etc) ] Flyers will be put up around town for future working bees as they arise. Lifeguard Training WHS requires lifeguard presence at all times when the pool is open, and to this end RCMC are offering financial assistance for those wishing to undertake lifeguard training.

Bank SA Reopens …

Well, not quite, but the old Savings Bank of South Australia building at 29 Torrens Road Riverton has been brought back to life!.....It’s wonderful to see any new business open in a small town, and particularly one that is flourishing.

The gorgeous old 1930 building has been refurbished and fitted as Sassy Lass, a boutique store for ladies, with on trend fashion that is for a broad age range, trans- seasonal and value for money. Proudly based on good old customer service and personal styling attention, if you need help with your wardrobe, Bronwyn is more than happy to oblige. With stock arriving weekly, feel free to browse and have chat with Bronwyn.

Wheelchair Access Vehicle

After 21 months in the planning, the Lions Club of Gilbert Valley officially launched their wheelchair access vehicle on June 7th, coinciding with the Centenary of Lions International. Around 50 people attended the launch on the front lawns of the Gilbert Valley Senior Citizen Homes including members of the Lions, Gilbert Valley Senior Citizen Homes Chairman Ian Rowett, CEO Graham Ackland and members of staff. Also present was The Honourable Geoff Brock, members of the R.C.M.C and interested members of the community. The fabulous ladies of the Gilbert Valley CWA gave up their time to help with afternoon tea. Based at, and managed by the Gilbert Valley Senior Citizen Homes, the vehicle will be available for use by

anyone within the Gilbert Valley who wishes to transport a family member or other person in a wheelchair. There is currently nothing else around within easy access of Gilbert Valley residents so this will provide some freedom to a lot of people. The vehicle is a specially modified VW Caddy that will accommodate 5 adults p lus the wheelchair passenger. Funding was provided by the Gilbert Valley Lions, The Gilbert Valley Senior Citizen Homes and the SA Government. The Hon. Geoff Brock, Minister for Rural Development and member for Frome worked hard behind the scenes to provide the funding that finally brought the project to fruition. Additional funding was also provided by the R.C.M.C (Chris Turner Bequest) and Maureen Kemp who after hearing of the project set about organising an Open Garden. Funds raised from the 2 day event in September 2016 were donated to the project.

The Lions Club of Gilbert Valley will cont inue, a long wi th other supporting parties, to fund the annual running costs of the vehicle. Any resident wishing to use the

vehicle can contact the Senior Citizen Homes on 8847 2307. Volunteer drivers are also available to anyone who needs to use the vehicle but prefers not to drive. A small fee proportional to the use of the vehicle will be charged. It is a very proud moment for our small but active club which works tirelessly to contribute greatly to the local community as well as to National and International causes. Anyone wishing to contribute to their local community through our local Lions Club can contact Greg McLeod on 0401 944372. Precision Joinery We are so fortunate to have such beautiful scenery around our town, and recently, I had reason to drive up along Blocks Rd at the Eastern boundary of Riverton….so beautiful and green and calm…. The reason I was there was to speak to the owners of Precision Joinery; Joe and Amy who established their business here in Riverton in 2014, manufacturing kitchens, vanities and other custom cabinetry. While only a small number of people in our community know they are there, earlier this year, they were able to employ a school based apprentice from our local high school. Eammon, 18, who plays football for North Adelaide in his spare time lives at Watervale, and works 2 days

a week at his trade. He showed enough promise to have been recommended by his teachers, and hopes to be able to continue full time next year on the provision he passes his year 12 exams. It’s wonderful to have a local business in the position to be able to employ an apprentice, and even more so if the business has the support of our local community. We wish them and Eammon the very best. Ministerial Visit On Thursday 27th July the Federal

Minister for Education and Training,

Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham

came to Riverton Primary School.

The visit came about because the

Minister wanted to visit a primary

school on his journey to Clare. A

member of the local community who

is connected to one of the Minister’s

people recommended Riverton

Primary School as a good quality

school.

When the Minister arrived Riverton

Primary School student leader

executive Max Nicholls, Joey

Dannenberg, Tegan Przibilla and

Hope Whaite were ready to greet

him, Kendall Jackson and Kirsty

Belton who accompanied the

Minister. The student leader

executive spoke with the Minister for

almost 10 minutes telling him what

makes Riverton Primary School a

great place to learn.

We were joined for this visit by

Jackie Bruce representing the

Riverton Community Management

Committee, Jane Leslie from

Riverton Kindy, Kathy Champion

from Riverton and District High

Schoo l and Scot t Haynes

representing our Governing Council

and Parents and Friends.

The Minster and guests were

entertained by the Riverton Primary

School Choir singing ‘Oye’ and ‘For

Love of Country’. We then joined

staff and student leaders for morning

tea, followed by a tour of some of

our teaching and learning spaces

and ample photo opportunities.

Cheryl Glenie, Principal Riverton

Primary School.
