Riverside Rascals Chapter, RHS …..Shirley Riscile, QM

The Rascals had a great ‘Social’ afternoon at The Landings on Wednesday, Sept. 18th.

Hostesses Peggy Knuckey, Bev Cabral and Mary Briggs provided the large turnout with homemade vanilla ice cream and cake, wine and beverages! Yum!

We also had a successful ‘red hat swap’ of items. You know what is said about another man’s treasure, and it’s so much fun to discover an item you didn’t know you needed!

October 16th, we will be on a road trip to the Ringling Brothers Museum in Sarasota!

And on November 14th we are honored be invited to the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of our Sister Chapter, the Red Hatters of Manatee!

RIVERSIDE QUILT CLUB …..Rae Lewis

Recipe of the Month

This month will see the bewitching hour. Be prepared for holiday potluck or entertaining boys and ghouls, mummies and daddies witch may drop in.

Witch’s Hat Cookies

Ingredients:

32 Hershey's® Kisses® brand milk chocolates, unwrapped

1 package (11 1/2 ounces) fudge-striped shortbread cookies (32)

1 tube (4.25 ounces) orange or red decorating icing

1 Attach 1 chocolate candy to chocolate bottom of each cookie, using decorating icing.

2 Pipe decorating icing around base of milk chocolate candy.

Spooky Witches’ Fingers

Almonds act as fingernails and red decorating gel as blood for these finger-shaped cookies that will provide a great treat for any Halloween party."

Ingredients:

1 c butter, softened

1 cup confectioners' sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup whole almonds

1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel

DIRECTIONS:

1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.

3. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed

paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.

5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity;

replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

Healthful Hints for the Month ~ Surprising Home Remedies!

For Common Dog Problems

Oatmeal Baths – A common cause of hot spots is itching caused by allergies. Soothing

itching can be a tough battle, and oftentimes it includes long-term steroid use. While this certainly has it benefits, it has its risks as well. However, a simple, homemade oatmeal bath for your dogs should help soothe their discomfort. By adding a few large handfuls of rolled oats to some hot water, and once it’s cooled down, you have an easily made oatmeal shampoo to soak your pup in. Remember that too many baths can be detrimental to your dogs, especially if they have allergies; so make sure to keep this spa treatment a once-a-month thing.

Green Beans – Obesity is a quickly growing problem for many dogs around the world. While being a pound or two overweight might not be a big deal for you, it’s a big deal for your dog. Just like in people, obesity is an ambassador for health problems galore – it puts a huge strain on the dog’s entire body. Obese pets are more prone to disc and joint disease and injuries, muscle injuries, pancreatitis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. We know it’s hard to look Bella in the eyes when you give her only two-thirds of her normal food ratio. We’re afraid she’s going to be left hungry, like so many of us are on our own diets. But steamed green beans are a new

lifesaver. Just remember to add the same amount of green beans to make up for the missing portion of food you’ve cut out in your dog’s meal. Green beans are full of fiber, so your pup will be left feeling very satisfied, while eating far less calories.

Canned Pumpkin – Diarrhea and constipation are common in ailments in dogs at least once in a while. Although sometimes it can be the result of a more dangerous illness, it’s often just an upset tummy from somebody who ate something they shouldn’t have. Canned pumpkin (or a homemade pumpkin puree), however, can offer a solution to both! Canned pumpkin is extremely rich in dietary fiber and not only aids in digestion, it will soak up the excess water present in your dog’s bowels if he’s got diarrhea. Give 1-2 teaspoons to 1-2 tablespoons with your dog’s meal depending on his or her size. Remember, we want plain canned pumpkin – do NOT give your dog

canned pumpkin pie mix, as it’s loaded with sugars and other ingredients that will only exacerbate Fido’s problems, and possibly cause more.

Benadryl – Dogs are curious, so they get into a lot of things. Sometimes those things (like

eating bees, for example) can cause allergic reactions. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be administered at 2mg/lb of body weight. It can be used for any allergies, such as itchy skin, rashes, and hot spots, but it’s important to keep this in mind if you see any abnormal swelling you think may be due to an allergic reaction. While you can administer Benadryl yourself, it’s important to remember that you should seek veterinary care if your dog experiences any type of allergic reaction.

Black Tea – Hot spots are a very common problem for many dogs and their owners. They seemingly come out of nowhere and are very uncomfortable for everyone involved, especially our pups. Major hot spots need veterinary treatment, but if you find one starting early or have a

smaller hot spot that isn’t so severe, consider foraging through your tea stash. Black tea leaves, when steeped in hot water, contain tannic acid that naturally helps dry out and heal the sores quickly. You’ll apply the tea bag directly to the hot spot (be careful the bag isn’t too hot!) and soak for about 5 minutes. You can do this three to five times a day, as needed.

Did you KNOW? for the Month—5 Signs Your Dog May Be In PAIN! …..Courtesy Facebook

Seeing our pets in pain is never a fun experience, and it’s something every dog owner dreads. Whether it’s a fresh injury or simply our aging elder-pups, we

want nothing more than to help them. But it’s important to remember that they can’t always cry out to us when in need. Dogs aren’t humans, so they don’t speak our language. The best thing we can do to keep them comfortable is to learn theirs.

Dogs display their pain in certain actions and behaviors that may seem subtle to us. Not everyone is a canine behavioral expert, but these five symptoms below will help you determine whether or not your loved one is in pain.

1. Excessive Grooming – It’s normal for dogs to lick and groom themselves, but it’s not normal for this to become an obsessive behavior. If you notice your pet tending to a localized area he’s never noticed before, or has just recently started spending a lot more time there, it could be a sign that he’s hurting. Pets will often groom places that are sources of pain in hopes to clean and care for the wound, even if

there is no open wound present. Be sure to keep an eye on the area and inspect it gently.

2. Heavy Panting – Panting is normal behavior that shouldn’t surprise any dog owner. Even when the panting is heavy, certain circumstances allow for it such as extra hot days and strenuous exercise. But if

you notice heavy panting out of nowhere, it could be stress-induced. This stress could be caused by pain your pet is experiencing. For whatever reason it may be, unexplained heavy panting should result in a trip to your veterinarian.

3. Inappetence – Lack of appetite is often the result of some sort of discomfort. You don’t feel like eating

when you’re not well, do you? Our dogs don’t either. They simply just don’t feel like eating, especially when it’s painful to walk all the way over to the food bowl. If you notice any sort of in appetence in your pet, it’s important to seek veterinary attention right away, as this could be a symptom of many dangerous ailments.

4. Shyness & Aggression – You may notice that your dog is starting to become more and more antisocial. He may stop running to the door to greet everyone and avoids petting. Or you may notice that your little one doesn’t want you picking her up anymore, or cries when you do. If this happens suddenly,

it’s reasonable to suspect pain as a probable cause. In some cases, you’ll find your normally overly friendly companion has become aggressive. If you notice your pup is hiding away and avoiding attention, be sure to check them for pain. It’s best to have a veterinarian do this, and it’s very important to remember not to take it personally if your dog does growl or snap at you. They aren’t necessarily trying to

hurt anyone, they just have no other way to tell anybody it hurts and they don’t want to be touched.

5. General Behavior Changes – Besides shyness and aggression, you might notice that your pup doesn’t want to walk up stairs anymore, avoids jumping and climbing, or doesn’t want to chase after his

beloved tennis ball. There are the obvious signs such as limping, but it’s important to also watch out for stiffness or arched backs. Dogs in pain often lay only flat on their sides, rather than curled up in their beds. They might be slower moving, sleeping a lot more and seemingly disinterested in things they used to love. Another sign is unexplained accidents in the house. It’s often very painful to get up from lying

down (which you also might notice), and sometimes pets just aren’t able to make it outside fast enough. Sometimes the squatting to urinate and defecate is avoided, and you’ll notice that your pet will start leaving messes in her bed. All of these things can be attributed to pain – often in our older dogs, but sometimes in our younger ones as well.

Being able to identify early signs of pain can lead to a much more comfortable outcome for both you and your dog. With early veterinary care, you can often start treatment before the condition worsens, regardless of cause. If old age is the culprit, you’ll be more aware and educated on keeping your loved one

comfortable and happy through his latter years. By keeping our pets happy, we keep ourselves happy too. And there’s nothing more important than sharing a peaceful, lighthearted life with our best friends.

Attitude Adjustments – 7 Uplifting Thoughts For Your Day!

Source: 7 Uplifting Thoughts For Your Day | Free People Blog http://blog.freepeople.com/2012/08/7-uplifting-

thoughts-day/#ixzz2gS6jF0dJ

I’ve come to realize that the most important thing is YOU, but always remain respectful to the people around you. On a daily basis I try and remember these seven

simple sentences.

1. Enjoy what is now, don’t worry about the future and think of the past, just concentrate on now and making the most of the time that is now and you will find you won’t get bogged down.

2. Do what you love and do it often.

3. Speak from your heart, people will engage you more.

4. Challenge yourself. Don’t get caught up in the comfort zone, always push yourself and

you will come out feeling great.

5. If you don’t like something, change it. Life is too short to do something you dislike.

6. Stop comparing yourself to others, BE YOU!

7. Share what you’re passionate about, talk out loud about things that inspire you and inspire the people around you, too.
