Clean it like you mean it.
ARMA Houston’s next Community Outreach project is the Trash Bash, on Saturday, 29 March 2014, from about 8a ‘til about 1p, at several sites in the Houston-Galveston region.
Thousands of Texans gather along state waterways to do their part in cleaning up the environment and participate in the largest statewide event to educate the public about the importance of our water resources. You, your family, your friends will select from five proposed sites, where you’ll be given a tee shirt and tools and materials to clear the regional watershed of debris. After a few hours of that, gather at a designated location for lunch, games and prizes.
The sites are: Brays Bayou, at Mason Park, 541 S 75th St, 77023. The contact here is Skai Shadow ([email protected]).

Participants can look forward to a bonus over and above performing a common-good deed: the chance to see nature in operation - blooming native wildflowers, and migrating birds preparing for the final leg of their journeys northward. Keeping in mind that waterway clean-up is the primary focus, feel free to bring binoculars and cameras.

! Know that wild animals may live in some of the areas. ! Look out for poison ivy and other harmful
plants. ! Clean designated areas only; don’t enter water. ! Work in pairs or groups. ! Don’t collect
medical waste, heavy items or closed drums and barrels. ! Wear gloves and closed-toe shoes, apply
sunscreen and/or insect repellent if necessary, and drink plenty of water. See more info below.
Complete a registration form/liability release, for yourself and for minors in your care that day. You can complete a form on the day of the event; better is to complete it and hand it over to the Chapter contact for submission as a group. By no means are volunteers discouraged from attending the event at any site. The Trash Bash website is

A limited supply of visors is available for Chapter participants and the people accompanying them. Volunteers who tell the site’s ARMA Houston contact person
of their intention to participate have a better chance of receiving a visor.

From Gulf Frwy., (I-45) ►exit Griggs Rd. If traveling south, turn left under the freeway
onto Griggs.
If traveling north, turn right onto Griggs.
Turn left at 75th Street;
Cross Brays Bayou;
at the park sign between McKinney and
Walker, turn right; drive toward the back.
Registration/meet-up is by the soccer field.
Look for signs directing you to the registration area.
Registration begins at 8, with clean-up
beginning at 8:30 and ending at 11.

Lunch - hot dogs, drinks, usually chips
and/or cookies - will be served

Hats (visors), long-sleeved shirts, long pants, closed-toe shoes are recommended; if the preceding week’s

Some clean-up areas can qualify as being wetlands, where boots almost always are required. Among the non-
wetlands area to be cleaned are roadsides, walkways and parking lots. Clean up in the water is not allowed.

accommodations for persons with disabilities attending this event. Individuals requiring language
interpretation, with specific accessibility concerns, or those with special communication needs should
contact Kathy Janhsen, Public Outreach and Education Planner, at least 24-hours prior to the event.

Site coordinators have scoped out 13 spots along more than six miles of the Cypress Creek Greenway as
clean-up sites. Collection will start at close-in locations, including Collins; buses will transport volunteers to
more remote sites, such as the Kickerillo-Mischer Nature Preserve (at the intersection of Chasewood Park Dr and
the SH 249 feeder road). Some clean-up areas may qualify as being wetlands, where boots
almost always are required. Among the non-wetlands area to be cleaned are roadsides,
walkways and parking lots. Clean up in the water is not allowed.

Rotary Club-sponsored lunch - hot dogs, drinks, usually chips and/or cookies - includes music
entertainment, door prizes, souvenirs, educational exhibits about watershed.

week’s weather included rain, wear boots. Bring or apply sunscreen and/or insect repellant. Event

You may be allowed to use your canoe or kayak to clean the water of floating trash. Be sure that craft meet all
mandatory safety requirements. Participants are not permitted to enter the water to collect trash. Trash Bash
insurance does not cover boat-related accidents to volunteers or equipment

Paddlecraft are welcome at this site, with an exclusive put-in that’s not usually
open to the public.

The combined Virginia Point Peninsula and John M. O’Quinn Estuarial Corridor Preserves comprise about 2400 acres of salt marsh, open bay shoreline, coastal prairie and other wetlands habitats. Among species that are of concern, endangered or threatened and which are known to occur on the preserve are the Brown Pelican and Texas Diamondback Terrapin. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council identified the area’s intertidal marshes as Essential Fish Habitat. About 60 species of vascular plants live there. From Eastex Frwy., (US-59, I-69) ►exit FM 1960. If traveling south, turn left under the freeway
onto 1960.
If traveling north, turn right onto 1960.
Pass through the City of Humble.
Cross Lake Houston on McKay Bridge.
Make immediate left into the Marina.
Look for signs directing you to the registration area.
Registration begins at 7, collection and safety
equipment distribution begins at 8, with clean-up beginning after, and ending at 11:30.

You may be allowed to use your boat, canoe or kayak to clean the lake proper of floating trash. Be sure that
craft meet all mandatory safety requirements. The marina may waive launch fees for Trash Bash participants;
that detail is unknown at this writing, so be sure to check with the Marina (281 324 1264) beforehand. Participants
are not permitted to enter the water to collect trash. Trash Bash insurance does not cover boat-related accidents to
volunteers or equipment. On-the-water trash collection is weather-dependent.

for assistance with the registration process, dumpster monitoring and hotdog luncheon preparation.

General Safety Site coordinators reserve the right to dismiss any volunteer or person at their location whom they deem to be working or
participating inappropriately, or putting themselves or others in danger.
Please watch the Trash Bash safety video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liLzjAfR_n4 before you show up to clean it like you mean it.
Individual cleanup sites may have additional rules or guidelines pertaining to their site, depending on the atmosphere or
setting of the cleanup area. Please follow the rules below, as well as any additional rules given at your chosen site.
All persons volunteering must fill out the required registration form. Parents and youth leaders shall be responsible for closely monitoring youth volunteers in their group or organization, and are responsible for making them aware of the rules and following them.
Most cleanup sites are in areas where wildlife exists. Please be watchful of areas where snakes, alligators, or harmful insects may be and alert those in your party to the presence of any of these creatures. Also be watchful for harmful plants such a poison ivy or poison oak, thorns, vines etc. Please wear gloves to avoid contact. Refrain from contact with any wildlife or feral domestic animals.
Alert your site coordinator to any animals or situations hampering the ability to clean up your site.
Safety and Health Advice
Wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes in all areas.
Life jackets are required for all passengers on any boat, canoe, kayak, or raft etc.
Do not work alone. Use the buddy system of two or three persons.
Do not enter, wade or swim in any body of water to retrieve debris unless approved by site coordinator or team leader.
Only collect trash where you are capable. Many areas have slopes, loose gravel or soil. Ensure proper footing before proceeding.
Do not climb up or down trees, rocks or steep banks to retrieve debris. Collection along sloping bayou, lakes or waterway banks should only be done when deemed safe by team leaders or coordinators. Do not disturb bare soil or contribute to erosion areas.
Do not reach or crawl into crevices, brush, under rocks or structures to retrieve debris. Use a tool when necessary.
Do not collect the following hazardous debris: Heavy items requiring more than one person to lift;
Partially buried items;
Broken glass;
Closed or sealed buckets and plastic or metal drums; or
Medical waste (hazard bags, needles, etc.) or carrion (dead animal carcass).
Take note of the location of these items and report it to your team leader
or coordinator. Appropriate personnel shall collect these items.
