President’s Report Hello again members. What a great day we had on Sunday 5th May. There were over 120 attending for the day with a number of visitors coming over from Mildura as well as more new members being nominated for membership. Thank you to those who worked behind the scenes getting the lunch and afternoon tea ready. The cruise around the Lake was just perfect and the stopover at the lakefront to get some excercise was well attended. It has been decided that when we have another day like this one, we will start later in the day to accommodate those who have church and family commitments. As a result of discussion with the executive, it has been decided to make some changes to the life membership process. The process will be as follows: 1. 15 year membership qualifies for membership certificate2. 25 year membership qualifies for membership certificate3. Life membership can be given after 25 years at the decision of the executive.4. A special award for services to the club can be awarded to individuals at the decision of theexecutive.5. Membership certificates will be awarded at the end of the year and the services and lifemembership will be awarded at the AGM.These changes make allowances and gives recognition to members for their commitment to theclub. There is always something happening with events and June and July are no exception.Remember next meeting is back to Thursday night. Check the events table for runs and otheractivities.Look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.ENJOY THE DRIVE

Warren

Open Day / Sunday Meeting

Our first daytime meeting on Sunday May 5th was well attended with a number of visiting members from other clubs – particularly Mildura clubs. A great line-up of vehicles was to be seen in front of the Clubrooms on the day, and everyone enjoyed the BBQ lunch.

After lunch a run was undertaken to Lake Bonney where we went for a walk along the Lake front and some members tried out the outdoor gym equipment placed along the walking path for the public to use. This is becoming a feature in many places now, and seems to be a popular addition to walking paths. Maybe we have introduced our members to a new fitness regime !

After such a vigorous activity (?) it was back into the vehicles for a tour of the back roads around Barmera, led by Peter and Jenny Hardwick, and back to the Hall for afternoon tea that we really didn’t need but all enjoyed.

A great day was enjoyed by all and maybe this will be a regular feature in future. Allan Carthew

GREAT WEEKEND AT PINNARROO

I fully understand we all have varying commitments, but it is only family reasons , a birthday or a death that has kept us from attending this event. My thinking is that the Camp-out could be renamed as I saw no tents; all mobile homes, caravans and the Motel. Jim and I only attempted it once to Camp in a 2 man tent in the Camping Grounds. He had

practised erecting it several times on our front lawn. The Fairlane boot was packed by Jim and I saw to the bedding requirements and the food.

On arrival the unpacking commenced and a question directed to me “Where did you put the blow-up mattress”. I am not sleeping on the ground” was my reply. Rod Edmonds came to our rescue with 2 kitchen bench cushions from their caravan. “What a night”

The weekend just passed, celebrating 40 years of the Con Rod Trophy was superb. The getting together of 4 clubs is great companionship melding lasting friendships. Saturday’s 90 km trip to visit a farm seemed a little excessive but we certainly got our $10 worth, with the sound of a DC3 engine running and the opportunity to sit in the cockpit. Later during afternoon tea we were shown a film taken from “Irene”, the plane’s name, showing how they dropped equipment, supplies and food to the troops on the ground in New Guinea during the war.

A large collection included a Spitfire, 2 Cessna's , a twin engine jet and various model aeroplanes, which one of the owner’s sons demonstrated with the plane touching 210 km/h with its own vapour making circles in a clear blue sky. His technical ability was amazing. There were tractors and one was adapted to the farm’s needs by Grog Murray himself. There was a Nissan Hut full of model aircrafts, memorabilia , photos etc. The afternoon tea which I mentioned was enormous and more than enough to feed 100 present. Sunday morning was held at the wetlands which is right in the middle of town and a nicely grassed area to compete for the Con Rod Trophy. The games were varied and interesting and the Riverland with their 10 only members were declared the winners for the weekend by 1 point. Riverland did increase their chances by scoring the highest points in a quiz on Saturday evening. Steve Williams did us proud with the organising in the end on his own as Tom Quince and Melva were unable to attend because of the Flu. The Games and the Quiz were organised by the Bordertown Club and a cake was made by Marlene Hagger of the Murraybridge Club and cut by a representative of the participating clubs. A Memorable Weekend.

Mother’s Day at Olivewood

Unfortunately I don’t have a report on this event, but the day was magnificent and I am sure those who attended had a great day. My apologies for not passing on the information about this day until the last minute, although we didn’t get the invite until the week before, so it wouldn’t have made the Radiator anyway.

Historic Motorcycles With the combined car/motorcycle run in May everyone that attended decided to take their car so the wives/partners were able to attend as well. I know my wife wouldn’t be very happy or comfortable on the pillion seat of the bike ! It was a magnificent day though as the report on the day states, so it would have been ideal for a bike run. Never mind there will be plenty of other great days in this climate in which we live. In fact if you are like me you probably have been taking every excuse to get out on the bike, even if only for a ten minute ride somewhere. There are times however that no matter how great the weather is the bleedin’ bike just won’t do the right thing. I had that problem with my CX500 Honda when one cylinder simply decided to go on partial strike. Spark was present so I decided it must be fuel. Sticky needle and seat I decided in my uneducated guess, so off to get new carby kits for both carbies and install them. Terrific, bike started up straight away on both cylinders and off I went pleased as punch. Rode it for 15 minutes or so and all was well. Decided to take it to work next day to make sure it was all good, and it was, until I got half way to work when the cylinder dropped out again. Bugger! - to use a well known expression. Doesn’t go too well on half the motor, but we coaxed it home very slowly. Went inside and changed, came out and there was spark still. Left it running while I contemplated what else it could be when the spark suddenly disappeared on one cylinder. So now we have another problem – I have fitted an aftermarket “Hall effect” electronic spark advancer and have no idea how it works or how to test it. Fortunately it was made in Adelaide so I could contact the producer who kindly sent a flow chart of how to test the components to find which one was causing the problem. Only problem was that there was so much on the page I couldn’t read it, so had to enlarge it all. Lots of LEDs flashing looking very pretty, but still not working. Eventually, after many emails, decided it was the advance controller so he sent a new one up to me. No different. Noticed then that after it got warm one LED stopped flashing, and it was the one for the cylinder that was missing, so decided it had to be the Hall unit itself. He sent another one of those up to me as well, and that solved the problem – I hope. Had to drop the engine each time I replaced or checked the unit, so I am now quite quick at dropping the engine of the bike. I guess there is a moral to this story too – apart from getting someone who knows what they are doing to help – and that is that it is good to buy locally if you can. With the unit made in Adelaide I was able to communicate easily with the maker of the unit and get invaluable help. Well at last I had two bikes that were both working properly, so decided I’d take the Triumph for a spin. Guess what ! It popped and farted and carried on like a pork chop, so I didn’t get to ride that one either. Thank Heavens for our local Triumph Guru Paul who was able to help me with that one too. So – touch wood – I now have two bikes to ride again and am just waiting for some more of our brilliant riding weather. I trust you are all enjoying your riding without the hiccoughs I seem to have had lately. Allan Carthew A few car quotes: Thanks again to Ros.

Bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. There’s something wrong with a society that drives the car to work out in a gym !!!

We know that small cars are good for us. But so is cod liver oil. And jogging. If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work ? The best safety device in a car is the rear view mirror – with a cop in it ! Everything in life is somewhere else – and you get there in a car.
