A group of seven nature lovers milled about the Van Cortlandt Park Nature Center early Saturday, the first day of fall, preparing to embark on a birding trip.

Audubon Society volunteer bird walk guide Andrew Baksh, wearing a khaki colored safari hat and utility vest, set up his scope at the edge of the Parade Ground.

“Excessive chatter, leave it in the back,” he said firmly as the group set out. “I bird by ear. I need to listen.”

What was billed as a one-and-a-half-hour bird walk, turned into a three hour stroll around Van Cortlandt Park — across the Parade Ground, up the trails to the lake, and back to the Van Cortlandt manor.

No bird was too common or too insignificant to note; the tiny chimney swifts elicited nearly as excited of shouts from Mr. Baksh as the great blue heron.

Mr. Baksh made bird calls to draw out the game from thickets and trees, and he did identify birds by sound, even before catching sight of them.

But birders on the walk were beginners. Hil-ary Russ, 41, has only been birding seriously for a couple of years.

“I don’t like to anthropomorphize, it’s not ex-actly like watching people, but its similar,” she says of her hobby.

She started noticing birds when vacationing in Florida, and enjoyed what she calls “the soap op-

era” of their existences. “Different birds have dif-ferent personalities, “ she said.

Ms. Russ said she heard a mockingbird singing quietly, practicing its repertoire. “As if he were sing-ing to himself,” she said. “And it was just fantastic!”

At the southern end of the lake, as it began get-ting too hot for jackets, Harvey Rosenberg, 74, was the first to spy a small bird among the mud flats of the shore. “It’s a green heron,” he said confidently.

Mr. Baksh confirmed and set up his scope for better viewing. The bird has long legs and huge tal-ons, and its disproportionately squat body is beauti-fully patterned with brown and green.

Mr. Rosenberg is a lifelong New Yorker who likes birding for its solitude.

“I was a Jewish kid who grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood … so I wound up spending a lot of time on my own.”

When he wasn’t playing in the streets, he went fishing and walking in Van Cortlandt Park. Some-where along the way, he said he fell out of the ritual-ized solitude of his youth. It wasn’t until he retired from teaching that he started taking long walks again.

“I’m up before dawn, and there’s not that much to do,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “So I get my café con leche and my toasted Spanish bread, and I go to the park ... I had forgotten how beautiful Van Cortland Park was.”

Guided Bird Walks take place in Van Cortlandt Park every Saturday at 8:00 a.m., beginning at the Van Cortland Nature Conservancy. They are free and open to all levels of experience and obsession at no cost.

Do you wish you had a big-ger bathroom? If so, you’re not alone.

In fact, in a recent survey conducted by Moen, almost half the respondents wished they could make their bath-room larger. But, a complete bathroom overhaul isn’t in the cards for most homeowners.

And when your bath is too small, it can quickly go from being a retreat from the outside world to a stress-inducing, clut-tered place.

Whether you’re hoping to update the guest bath or the master suite, you can create a larger-looking bath without actually expanding your space. With a thorough cleaning and some space-expanding illu-sions, you’ll be relaxed and re-juvenated in your new “bigger” bath in no time.

Using an intense color pal-

ette is not always the best tech-nique when it comes to a tiny bathroom.

Make a statement

Bold, dark colors can weigh a room down, making it look even smaller. Instead, use pale and cool colors like soft whites, pastels and neutral tones to add size and depth.

Continue the color scheme in the woodwork, trim, vanity and door to create a “disappear-ing” look that will lengthen the walls.

By eliminating the hard edges created by drastic chang-es in color, your eye will flow smoothly across the room.

It’s important to look at the small details like faucets and accessories to create a state-ment. Choosing a sophisticated design can provide a beautiful

focal point in your bath. Manu-facturers are now creating a wide range of styles from sin-gle-handle to widespread and wall-mounted.

Some faucets feature tra-ditional detailing like porce-lain inlays and a generously sized spout. And designers are now creating matching faucets for the shower or tub, and a complete selection of accessories.

Look in the mirror

A mirror in the bathroom can do more than just show your reflection — it can stretch the space by reproducing it.

Additionally, mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light, making a smaller room look bigger and brighter by bounc-ing illumination throughout.

Don’t think that mirrors

need to only be above the sink. A great trick for improving

your room’s reflective qualities is to hang a large, horizontal mirror along the longest wall of the bath.

However, if a large mirror is out of your budget, or not prac-tical for your space, the same effect can be created by group-ing an arrangement of smaller mirrors.

Unique mirrors can often be found at flea markets in dif-ferent shapes and sizes. Sim-ply paint each frame in com-plementary colors and group them along the longest wall. This allows for the room to stretch, while also providing a design element that’s uniquely yours.

Another easy, dramatic way to use mirrors is to turn the fronts of vanity cabinets into your canvas.

Use glue to attach large, square mirrors, or tiny mirror tiles — either square or round — to the outside of cabinets and drawers. For a never-ending room, position two mirrors on opposite walls to create the per-fect illusion.

Whatever technique you choose, mirrors are great de-cor pieces that won’t muddle a small bath.

No to big and bulky

Traditional, large vanities with cabinet drawers can make an already petite-looking bath appear even smaller.

In order to avoid this com-mon misstep, there are two paths to follow: either install a vanity with open storage areas; or try suspending shelving for a contemporary feel.

This will create a more spa-

cious look — without losingprecious storage — by givingthe shelving a light and airy ap-pearance.

Open shelving is perfect fortowels and linens, plus items like tissues and cotton balls, which can be stored in decora-tive jars or containers.

Avoid a cluttered look by placing large wicker baskets on the bottom shelf of the van-ity for large everyday itemssuch as brushes, toiletries and makeup.

You can create a beauti-ful bath — regardless of thesquare footage — that will be-come a place of relaxation and worthy of attention.

Use these tips to turn a com-pressed and uncomfortable space to one that feels spacious and soothing without a majorremodel. For more information, visit www.moen.com. — ARA

T ake one look at this grand house at 3214 Oxford Ave. and you’ll want to head straight for the climate-con-

trolled wine cellar to choose a cele-bratory snifter from its stock of 1,000 bottles.

The four-bedroom, two-full bath-room house was built in 1929. It has a pair of decks, both facing east, a garden, a wood-burning fireplace and hardwood floors throughout.

The first floor includes a large liv-ing room, with track lighting and lovely arched windows.

There is also a renovated galley kitchen with two windows, stainless steel appliances, tall cabinets and recessed lighting. The dining room seats six and has sliding doors that lead to the two decks.

On the second floor there are three bedrooms, along with a full bathroom. In the basement, the fourth bedroom sits next to another bathroom and a laundry room.

Lee Moskof has listed the house at $845,000, with taxes at $5,721.

What’s cooking?

By Danielle [email protected]

One of the easiest things to get wrong is cooking green beans. A woman I gave a cook-ing lesson to once asked me how to cook them until they were “really, really soft but still green” so her son would eat them.

Well, it’s impossible. While I know of some Persian dishes that require long cooking times for green beans, haricot verts, yellow wax beans, and regular green beans should and can stay bright if cooking until crisp or just tender. Otherwise they turn that unappetizing char-treuse color. I find that most kids like to lift up there vividly green beans one by one and feel a little snap with every bite.

Getting there is easy. Bring a very large pot of water to a rolling boil. Season generously with salt. Add the green beans making sure there is plenty of water for them to swim in. It should only take a few seconds for the water to come back up to a boil. If not, place your lid on the pot to speed up the process of reheating the water.

After 45 seconds, taste a bean. It should be mildly fla-vored with a little bit of a snap. You can cook them a little lon-ger for a more tender bean. If serving them right away, trans-fer the beans to a serving plat-ter.

If not, transfer them im-mediately to a large ice water bath to shock and preserve the color. Once cold but no longer than that (about 30 seconds), transfer the beans to a paper towel lined sheet tray or col-ander to drain off any excess water. Use immediately or store in an airtight container for up to three days.

From here the possibilities are endless. Try the following easy, short recipes with 1-1/2

pounds of cooked greens beans.1) Toss beans with 2 Cups

halved cherry tomatoes, zest of 1 lemon, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. Serve imme-diately or prepare up to 1 day ahead and store in the refrig-erator.

2) Melt 1 stick of unsalted butter in a large pan over me-dium heat. Sweat 1 sliced shal-lot and 5 minced garlic cloves in butter. Once soft, add 1 cup

of dry bread crumbs and cook until golden. Reheat the beans quickly in the microwave or in a pan with 2 Tbsps. water just un-til hot. Toss with breadcrumbs and serve immediately.

3) Whisk together 2 tsps. rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil, and 4 Tbsps. canola oil. Season with salt and pepper and toss with cold green beans. Garnish with toasted black and white sesame seeds.

There’s nothing sadder than a soggy string bean

GREEN BEANS are best when they’re still crisp and bright green after cooking.

Don’t let kids head to school on an empty stomach

Fitting breakfast into your kids’ morning routine can be a struggle, especially during the school week.

Between nagging them to get out of bed and preparing their book bags for school, breakfast is often put at the bot-tom of the morning to-do list. In fact, up to 30 percent of middle and high school students skip breakfast, missing important nutrients that are unlikely to be made up later in the day.

That means more than a quarter of students are going to school on an empty stomach and lack the nutrition they need to start their day right.

Furthermore, research has shown that kids and adoles-cents who eat breakfast tend to have better dietary habits and make healthier eating choices throughout the day.

The breakfast struggle is something even actress and mother of four, Holly Robinson Peete can relate to. “One of my biggest challenges as a mom is to make sure my kids get breakfast. With busy mornings, it is essential that my kids get the nutrition they need,” says Robinson Peete. “I want to set my kids up for success, espe-cially during the school year.”

But even the most dedicated breakfast lovers have mornings that are just too crazy to find time to eat. Robinson Peete un-derstands how busy schedules can make it difficult to keep up good habits. “I like to describe my mornings as ‘controlled madness’ — on a good day I have less than an hour to get my kids out of bed, showered and dressed, teeth brushed, fed and out the door to school,” she says.

One way to help minimize stress in the morning is to pre-pare things like lunches and backpacks the evening before. If that’s not possible, desig-nating a spot in the house for backpacks and school items to remain can help reduce the amount of organizing that is needed in the morning.

Another simple tip is to wake up 10 minutes earlier. Just a few extra minutes at the start of the day can leave time for a quick breakfast.

James Purefoy stars in ‘Solomon Kane.’

‘Solomon Kane’ — sword and sorcery, Robert E. Howard-styleBy James [email protected]

Running time: 104 minutes MPAA rating: R (MPAA rat-ing: R for violence through-out)

The historical adventure movie has fallen out of fashion in recent decades. Except for the occasional Troy, Alexan-der or The Mummy, this once-dominant movie genre has mostly slipped into obscurity. Where once Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Charlton Heston filled the big screen on a regular basis with such clas-sics as The Crimson Pirate, The Vikings, The War Lord and The Flame and the Arrow, there are only a few of these boys-own adventures to be found nowa-days.

Yet if one seeks them out, they’re still around. One such

swashbucker, Solomon Kane, can be found in theaters start-ing Friday, Sept. 28th and is currently viewable on demand on television.

The movie stars James Purefoy, who played Mark Antony in HBO’s classic TV series, Rome. This charismatic, intelligent and energetic actor has been helping keep the his-torical adventure genre alive by portraying the sort of char-acters Lancaster, Douglas and Heston once brought to the screen.

Like them, he plays histori-cal heroes with stout hearts but feet of clay. In Solomon Kane, for example, he portrays a 17th century adventurer who renounces violence in order to save his soul, but who, inevi-tably, must take up the sword again.

Written and directed by Michael J. Bassett, the film is a dark and moody period

adventure, reminiscent of the Ray Harryhausen classics, Ja-son and the Argonauts and the Sinbad series as well as the at-mospheric Last of the Mohicans and The Patriot.

Solomon Kane’s character was created by pulp writer Robert E. Howard, best-known for his Conan series. Kane ap-peared in over a dozen stories and poems written in the 1920s and 30s, mostly in the fantasy and horror fiction pulp maga-zine Weird Tales. As imagined by Howard, he was a Puritan adventurer, roaming the world to right wrongs and expunge evil in all its human and super-natural forms.

While not adapted from a specific Howard story, direc-tor/writer Bassett’s original screenplay draws upon Kane’s history and creates plot situa-tions which fit the general di-rection of the hero’s legendary timeline.
