Giving Back and Providing Support to our Neighbors

Meet Rob McDonough The Jersey Shore Branch YMCA’s Annual Tiadaghton Race has been a significant

family event in the community for 46 years, but in 2017 for one participant in the 1OK race, the significance ran deeper than just a fun time. Rob McDonough, an ARMY Veteran and a frequent member of the Jersey Shore Branch YMCA shared with us his reasoning for deciding to do a Ruck March of the 1OK this year while carrying a 50lb pack on his back. Rob carried the pack with him as a symbol of support for his military brothers that carry the weight of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after their service had ended. Rob also marches to honor the memory of a close friend that felt the weight of PTSD was a little too heavy, ending his own life. He wants his fellow veterans or anyone who struggles with PTSD to know that they're "Never Out of the Fight:' Rob believes this so much so that he reminds himself and others of this quote daily with a tattoo on his right bicep. Rob powered through the 1Ok course with full ARMY gear and his pack as he represented the strength and willpower needed to carry the weight of not only the physical challenges that we face in life, but the mental ones as well.

Meet Samuel In December the Umstead family traveled to China to adopt Samuel who had spent most

of his three years in a crib. When they brought him home, he did not walk or talk. Since then, Samuel has made such progress due to the love his inspirational family has shown him. According to his mother Heather, "Samuel know when we pull in and get out at the Y. He kicks his feet and smiles. If we let him walk he just about runs in. ”'Samuel is part of the Superstars program and loves to move to the music and watch all of his Superstar friends. Samuel is a joy to have in the program at the Eastern Lycoming Branch and everyone loves him!

Meet Carla Bailey The YMCA has been a big part of Carla and her family’s life for over 40 years and has offered her

a great amount of programs, activities and events including nursey school, children's programs, afterschool programs, exercise classes and competitions. In life changing events, it is reassuring to know the Y is always there for her. During one of the worst circumstances in her life, the death of her husband to whom she was married to for over 45 years, Carla discovered "Jazzercise "through the YMCA, which she began attending with a friend. That class helped her through her most difficult times of mourning. "Simply knowing I had a place to go and a time to be there got me out of bed every day. Whenever I arrived at the Y, people knew my name and cared that I was there. It kept me going on days when I thought I couldn't take one more step. The exercising with friends was good for Carla's physical health and did wonders for her mind, all while giving Carla something to do to take her mind off of personal anguish. Carla knew it was going to be another big change in her life when she decided to move to Tioga PA. One of the first things she did was check out the local YMCA. She immediately joined the Tioga County Branch YMCA in Mansfield as a Silver Sneakers member and found herself once again with a new place to go, a place to exercise and stay healthy, and a place where people cared. The staff at the Tioga Y are always happy to have her around. The YMCA has been great for Carla, and Carla has been great for the Y!
