    Queens Give

BackMy Girl USA is a program that

is not your typical beauty pag-

eant.My Girl USA focuses on more

than outward appearances. Theyrequire candidates to be communi-ty involved, be of high moral char-acter, involved in their school andrepresent a healthy lifestyle.

Two girls who represent Mont-calm County are Lauren Corwin,12 years old, MGU Pre-teen MissMontcalm County and LindsayCorwin, 9 years old, MGU LittleMiss Montcalm County.

Lindsay has taken on a commu-nity project assembling and deliv-ering gift baskets to patients at theDevos Childrens Hospital in GrandRapids. She chose this platform be-

cause Lindsay herself was a patientat Devos all too often when she wasyounger due to various issues andillnesses. During one of her stays,Lindsay was given a gift basket.

She has also given books toGrand Rapids Allergys waitingroom for young children.

Laurens platform is AutismAwareness. She chose this platformbecause two of her family membersand a few of her friends have a formof Autism. Lauren realized theamount of preconceptions and lackof knowledge regarding Autism overthe past few years. She hopes to fur-ther educate residents of MontcalmCounty through this event.

The Autism Walk will take placeat Ensley Park in Howard City isfrom 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.11. After the walk there will be facepainting, chalk art, and an inat-able obstacle course for the chil-dren. Anyone is welcome to attend, including Montcalm County Royal-ty (please wear sashes and crowns)and are asked to bring a non-per-ishable food item or a new/gentlyused book to donate. All food itemswill be donated to helping Hands ofHoward City and the books will bedonated to the Timothy C. Hauen-stein Reynolds Township Library.Monetary donations will be accept-ed as well to purchase audio books

at the library. To keep everyonesafe, participants are encouraged tonot bring bikes or pets.

Lauren is planning to host an-other walk in Greenville in thespring of 2011 to benet other partsof Montcalm County. For more in-formation contact Katrina Corwinat (231) 629-2005

The Montcalm County Sheriffs Ofceis investigating a car vs. motorcycle crashthat occurred Monday afternoon on NorthGreenville Road near Briggs Road in PineTownship.

A motorcycle driven by Allen Lee Ad-

ams of Six Lakes was traveling northboundon N. Greenville Road between Langstonand Briggs Road. Adams passed a line of3-4 cars with the rst car turning left intoa private drive. The motorcycle struck a vehicle driven by Gail Marie Johnson of

Stanton. Adams, who was wearing a hel-met, was own from the scene to SpectrumButterworth Campus by Areomed. John-son, who was belted, wasnt injured. Alco-hol isnt believed to be a factor. The crashremains under investigation.

A historic drought in Russia has boosted the world price of wheat thissummer, and that has resulted in lo-cal wheat prices rising here in CentralMichigan and much enthusiasm aboutplanting wheat this fall. Here are a fewtips and reminders to help you maxi-mize the yield potential of your wheatcrop. Plant clean high quality wheatseed. Laboratory testing for germina-tion is a good assurance of the viabilityof the seed. Seed that has been eld in-spected during its growing year helpsto ensure its varietal purity and thatit is free of seed-borne disease. Seedtreatment with a systemic fungicide will add protection from many seed-borne diseases.

Choose varieties that are high yield-

ing and disease resistant. Consult vari-ety trial results from reputable sources.MSUs wheat variety trial can be foundat http:/www.css. msu.edu/varietytri-als/ or contact the MSU Montcalm Ex-tension ofce at (989) 831-7500.

Check your seeding rate and equip-ment. Your seeding equipment shoulduniformly plant 1.6 to 2.1 million seedsper acre. Seeding rates should bematched to soil type and productivity.Generally, higher seeding rates givethe best return. Remember that seedsize varies from seed lot to seed lot.

Check planting depth regularlyand often while planting. Wheat seedshould be planted between 0.75 to1.5 inches deep. A non-uniform seed-bed can cause the depth to vary as the

planter is going across the eld. Thiscan be due to non-uniform tillage orsurface compaction. When seedingdepth cannot be uniformly held in theideal range, further increasing seedingrate can help compensate.

Begin planting after the HessianFly Free date. Planting early can helpensure adequate growth to overwinterand maximize tillering, however plant-ing before the y free date is not ad-vised. The Hessian Fly Free for Michi-gan varies from south to north fromlate Sept. in the south to early Sept. inNorthern areas. In Montcalm County, the Hessian Fly Free date is Sept. 15th.For more information, please contactthe MSU Montcalm Extension ofce at(989) 831-7500 or (616) 225-7500.
