Daylight-saving time: What to do with your extra hourN orth A mericAN P recis s yNdicAte
Many people are looking forward to theextra hour of sleep that comes with day-light-saving time. However, that extra hourcan help keep families safe if it is used wisely.Whether making a potentially life-savingchange in your home or reaching out to helpothers, here are a fewideas to make themost of the added hour:
Helping Yourself n Change the batteries in your home
smoke alarms. Thats the recommendationfrom the International Association of FireChiefs (IAFC) and Energizer, who partneron the Change Your Clock Change Your Bat-tery program, recognizing the fact thatalmost two-thirds of home re deaths occurin homes without working smoke detectors. The IAFC also recommends a mix of bothionization and photoelectric smoke detectorsbe installed to alert you to all types of home
res. While 96 percent of American homes
have at least one smoke alarm, 19 percentof all homes with smoke alarms do not haveat least one smoke alarm that works, mostly due to missing or dead batteries. In addition, roughly 4.5 million homesare at risk by not having smoke detectors atall. Take the time to install detectors if thereisnt one in your home. The National FireAlarm and Signaling Code recommends aminimum of one smoke alarm on each levelof a home, including one inside each bed-room and one outside each sleeping area.
n In addition to changing the batteries inyour smoke detector, inspect them. Alarmsthat are more than 10 years old should bereplaced, as should any that are damaged, painted over or show signs of wear. Cleanand dust them. Plan to clean and test smokealarms and carbon monoxide detectors oncea month.
n Change the batteries in your carbonmonoxide detectors. Every home should also
have at least one working carbon monoxidedetector on each level of a home, includingone outside each sleeping area. Carbon mon-oxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless. TheNational Safety Council reports that almost700 people die each year as a result of un-intentional poisoning by gases or vapors innon re situations. Carbon monoxide was in - volved in the majority of these deaths.
n Draw out a family evacuation plan forevery member of the household. Include ex-its from all rooms of the house including each bedroom and basement. Then set up a family meeting time and practice the plan to makesure it works. Adjust the plan if needed. Only 23 percent of U.S. families have developedand practiced a home re escape plan.
Family evacuation plans are critical tohome re safety, but can also be useful inmany types of emergencies. Here are a few more suggestions for preparing for otherhazards and emergencies that may requireevacuation or sheltering in place:
n Check the batteries in your ashlightsand keep them next to your beds, in thekitchen and other heavily used rooms in thehome.
n Have a family scavenger hunt. See how quickly you can gather the things you need inan emergency. The U.S. Dept. of HomelandSecurity suggests including water, food, bat-tery-powered radio and ashlights with ex -tra batteries, rst-aid kit, change of clothing, blanket or sleeping bag, a manual can open-er, and any special items needed for yourfamily. Use these items to create a householdemergency kit.
n Gather important family documentssuch as copies of insurance policies, SocialSecurity cards, passports, identi cation and bank account records and place them in a waterproof portable container. Make sure toinclude a list of the persons in the household, their names and ages, weights, allergies andany medical conditions and update periodi-cally.

Financial losses in the af-termath of the economic crisishave forced many Americans tore-evaluate their savings plans.
With many investors willingto accept lower returns in ex-change for security, indexedannuities have grown in popu-larity as they protect principal
while providing guaranteed cu-mulative interest no matterthe market dynamics.
GuaranteedIncome
An annuity is a contract with an insurance company thatprovides tax-deferred growthof principal with the option of guaranteed income even forlife.
Like a traditional annuity,an indexed annuity provides aguarantee of principal but withan interest crediting rate tiedin part to the movement of anindex such as the S&P 500. The
bene t is a historically higherinterest rate that provides effec-tive protection against in ation.
Variable annuities, on theother hand, carry more risk.
While the account value can ap-preciate more quickly, it still re-mains at risk.
When it comes to retire-ment planning, people are wea-ry, and rightfully so, said ChrisLittle eld, president and chief executive of cer of life insur -ance and annuity carrier Aviva
USA. While many remain hun-
gry for returns on their savings, they want to shield themselvesfrom potential losses that have
become too common today. As an insurance product, an
indexed annuity provides safety and protection. There are, how-ever, costs associated with thishigher level of security. Nev-ertheless, indexed annuitiesgenerally cost less and providesimilar rates of return whencompared to other retirementsavings products. The WhartonFinancial Institutions Center re-cently determined that indexedannuity returns have been com-petitive with alternative portfo-lios but carry less risk.
Annuities are long-term sav-ings vehicles and, like many tax-deferred nancial products, there are some restrictions suchas surrender fees designedto discourage people from un-necessarily dipping into theirsavings. Meanwhile, most in-dexed annuities allow for the
withdrawal of 5 to 10 percent of principal without penalty.
Need fordiversificationOne of the key lessons aris-
ing from the recent nancialcrisis may be the importanceof diversi cation. Indexed an -nuities should serve as one facetof a retirement plan, protectinga portion of assets while pro-
viding potential for long-termgrowth.
While indexed annuitiesare bene cial, portfolio diver -si cation is crucial, Little eld
notes. Consumers should care-fully consider all their optionsfor retirement income with thehelp of a quali ed expert.
As a record number of peo-ple enter retirement, many will
be faced with converting savingsinto lifelong income. Indexed
annuities can help deliver thisdesired paycheck while help-ing to secure a safe and comfort-able retirement.
Todays retirees remain focused on income for life
LOOK TO THE FUTURE: As an insurance product, an indexed annuity provides safety andprotection. (NAPSI Photo)
