After many months of planning by theTri County 2012 Senior All-Nighter Par-ent Committee, the TC Senior All NightCelebration, an alcohol and drug freeevent, was held on May 17, immediatelyafter Tri County 2012 Senior class night. The event was well attended, by about 75percent of TCs class of 2012. The parentsheld many kinds of fundraisers, gath-ered donations from the community, andplanned all of the details for the venue

and entertainment for the evening, whichwas all kept a secret, to add more excite-ment and anticipation for the seniors whocould attend.

The evening began with two busloadsof TC seniors leaving TCHS for theirsurprise destination. The students wereexcited, singing songs like the wheelson the bus go round and round on theirway to their destination. After a littlemore than one hour, and a short delay atEvart McDonalds, they arrived at theirnal destination. The parents had chosenSpring Hill camp in Evart for their specialcelebration Carnival evening.

After a brief welcome, the studentsstarted their celebration with a variety offood. They all were able to feast on a subsandwich and taco bar, while they sur-veyed the area and the schedule for the

evening. Then, the students split theirtime for 2-3 hours participating in severalactivities that were unique to Spring Hill. They went down a Zipline, swam in a poolwith a special waterslide, climbed a RockWall, went on a special Johnny Jump andother climbing apparatuses. The studentsalso received beach towels and tee shirtsto wear, and have all of their friends sign,as the evening fun continued.

Meanwhile, the carnival games began, where students would earn tickets byparticipating, to use to put in containersnumbered for 20 different prizes. Theseprizes had been chosen by the parentcommittee, because they were items thatyoung adults would appreciate, simplyfor fun, or as they go off to college, or go

to work and nd their own place to live. These prizes ranged from gift certicates,

to electronics, from luggage to cameras. The students enjoyed the balloon-dartgame, football throw, stand the bottle, alarge blow up relay maze, mega-twister,candid fun photos and caricature artists,to name a few of the activities. Then, af-ter midnight, a DJ was there for severalhours of music and dancing fun, as thestudents were able to enjoy an ice creambar, along with other treats. The celebra-tion ended with two of the best eventsof the evening. A hypnotist entertainedthe crowd with some magic and by hyp-notizing 14 students, with entertainingfunny imaginary situations that every-one could really appreciate. Everyonewas wide-awake and were amazed byhow their fellow classmates acted; it was

very funny. Finally, the evening endedwith the awarding of the 20 large prizes,

along with a bag of special gifts for everysenior who attended. These gifts includeda drawstring backpack, some gift cards, aash drive, a portable cooler tote and fold-able laundry hamper. The students werepleasantly surprised to be honored withall of these gifts by the parents and com-munity. Since the TC Senior All-nighterhas ended, we have received many thankyou emails and Facebook messages fromstudents and parents alike. Thank youfor special night to remember was saidby several students, and is an indicationthat the evening was a huge success.

Now that the event is over, due tothe parents planning and the generos-ity of the community, there are still somefunds remaining after all of the bills have

been paid. Therefore, the committee hasdecided to donate approximately $300

to the TC Senior Class charity DevosChildrens Hospital, as well as to the classitself, to use for its 5-year class reunion. Finally, the TC 2012 Senior All Night par-ent committee would really like to thankall the parents, businesses, Tri Countystaff and the Montcalm County Drug FreeCollaborative, for all of your donations offunds, gifts, time or simply sharing yourideas, which helped us make this eveninga success. We know that our TC Classof 2012 was special, and everyone whohelped us reach our goal is proof of whata wonderful community we have.

    TO THE EDITOR:

Today my elderly aunt lost her home in ahouse re. This could have been preventedthrough simply cleaning the dryer vent duct-

work. She had had health issues for a number of

years and was living there off and on by herself. As such, this isnt something you think aboutcleaning.

She was extremely lucky to have a workingsmoke alarm and a second exit in her homehad recently been cleared for a possible emer-gency.

Im writing this in the hopes that otherpeople out there who have elderly family liv-ing alone will stop in and check on them. Makesure their smoke alarms are working, check theexits to be sure that they can get out in case ofan emergency and clean the lint of the duct-work for the dryer. There are other things thatshould also be checked and a quick visit to yourlocal re department could be life saving.

The years of memories lost in a re cant bereplaced and neither can a life.

Stage Door Players topresent a dinner/theater

You dont need a will. Well, probably, you dont

    need a will.

Its a common misconception that if you dont have

a will or a trust or any other estate plan, your stuff

will go to the state of Michigan when you die. It

will not. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

    Well, probably nothing.

When you die with no will, Michigans default

statute rules. That statute has been on the books for

many years. It was drafted by the Legislature with

the help of estate planners and trust lawyers, with

input from representatives of several communities

and associations with the interests of our more elder

citizens in mind. So probably the default statute will

take care of distributing your stuff through probate

if you die without a will.

But the problem is that it might not. No default leg-

islation can perfectly predict every family structure

and the wishes of family members who die without

a will. For example, with no will your estate passes

to your spouse. However if you dont have a spouse,

it passes in equal shares to your children, which

would include children born during your marriage,

and children adopted by you. But if youre a man

who fathered a child while you were not married to

the mother, without a will that child might end up in

a fight with her siblings over your estate.

If youd had a child with your wife before you gotmarried but your name didnt make it to the childs

birth certificate and you and your wife die in the

same accident, then your parents can try to step in to

take your stuff if you die without a will. Your child

might have to fight for what youd hope shed in-

herit. Probably that will lead to a probate lawsuit.

If you had children from your first marriage, and

your wife had had children from her first marriage,

then you two had a child together (more and more a

common scenario), and then your wife died? Prob-

ably you wont like it that you dont get all of her

stuff because she died without a will. Youll get so

much off the top, but youll have to share the rest

with her 2 children and your child together.

When Aunt Clarice, who never married or had chil-

dren, dies without a will at age 88, perhaps you ex-

pect to receive the larger share of her estate. Her

house is worth $85,000. She has a chunk of change

in CDs. You and your spouse have taken care of her

the last 8 years. Perhaps you even retired early to

take care of Aunt Clarice. She promised you shed

remember you in her will. So youre expecting what

you think is a fair chunk. But imagine your surprise

when you learn that Aunt Clarice didnt remember

to make out a will. You wont be happy that her es-

tate will be split by default statute rather unequally

among you, your three siblings, Aunt Clarices threeliving siblings, and Aunt Clarices three deceased

siblings 8 children. Bottom line? You could receive

only 1/15th of her estate, perhaps just $10,000 for

all your years of sacrifice for her, instead of what

she had promised you. Probably youll end up in a

probate lawsuit fighting all your relatives.

From the moment you have a dependent a spouse,

child, grandchild, or other who depends on you

you owe it to your family to set down your wish for

how to divide your property and debts when you

die. Save them the anger and frustration of hav-

ing to take the shares that the default law will give

them. Save them from probate, and law suits and

family discord that never goes away.

If nothing else, the Michigan legislature has passed

a law that helps people prepare their own wills. Goto www.michigan.gov and search for the statutory

will. Fill it out. Take it to the bank and sign it before

    a notary.

Put your will in your will and end up a winner.

Because if you have no children or descendants or

heirs and no will, then and only then, your estate

will in fact go to the state - probably.
