Montcalm County residents should be aware of aphone scam which originated on the West Coast, whichcould compromise your phone’s security and peace of mind. It starts when scammers call you pretending tobe with your local police department, the Sheriff’s Of-
ce, other public safety agency or hospital. They makeup a story about your child or other loved one beinghurt in an accident and ask you to call the of cer “atthe scene” by dialing *72 and a phone number they provide. Undersheriff Bellinger warns area residentsnot to do this! “Montcalm County Sheriff’s deputieswill never instruct anyone to dial a phone number be-
ginning with *72 to receive “on scene” accident infor -mation about their loved ones” said Undersheriff Bell-inger.
When you dial *72 at the beginning of a call youcan activate call forwarding, if you subscribed to it. Allcalls to your phone number will then be forwarded tothe phone number the scammers gave you. When thishappens, you may be billed a charge each time a call isforwarded to the other number. You may also be billedlong distance charges, pay-per-call charges and collectcall charges, if applicable. All calls will continue to beforwarded until this feature is turned off. (In most cas-
es *73 stops call forwarding but it can vary from carrierto carrier.)
You may have call forwarding as a feature of yourlandline or wireless service. If you are unsure if youhave it, ask your phone company. Not all call forward -ing is activated by *72. If you have call forwarding Un-dersheriff Bellinger suggests you nd out how to useit, as well as all of your other services so that you canavoid becoming a victim of this type of scam.

Deputies investigate pit bull attackMontcalm County Sheriff’s Of ce dep -
uties are investigating a dog attack thatsent a 38-year-old Morley woman to thehospital for bite wounds.
Deputies indicate that Linda Adamth-waite was walking on Yankee Road nearMarble Road in Win eld Township whenshe was attacked by two pit bulls. Adamth -
waite told deputies that the two dogs camefrom a property near the address of 16495
West Yankee Rd. Adamthwaite told inves -tigators she was afraid of dogs and triedto ignore them when they approachedher, so they would leave her alone. Thetwo dogs began to circle her and knockedher to the ground. Adamthwaite was then
repeatedly bitten by the dogs. A neighborheard Adamthwaite’s cries for help andcame to the location to assist her.
Adamthwaite was transported by pri- vate vehicle to Kelsey Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.Deputies indicate that the owners of thedogs were out of the area at the time of
the attack. A family member watching thedogs removed the animals from the sceneand detained them in a residence until an-imal control of ces could arrive on scene.
The incident is being further investi -gated and the nal report will be providedto the Prosecutor’s of ce for review of possible criminal charges.

Tri County School NewsAC A D E M I C S • ART S • AT H L E T I C S • AC H I E V E M E N T
May 2, 2011
The Tri County Area Schools Board of Education would like to thank those of you who were able to attend our recent community meetingsregarding the 2011-2012 nancial outlook for TCAS. We want to answer some questions that were asked regarding our upcoming electionrequesting the renewal of the operating millage and approval of a bond proposal.• Bond pr oposal is requesting approximately $945,000 with an estimated net -0- mill increase.• The word “remodeling” is in the ballot language as required by the State of Michigan when upgrading infrastructure to support technologyusage, i.e.: electrical wiring, cabling for new technology, etc.• No new construction is planned within this bond pr oposal.• A successful vote would not r esult in an increase to our debt millage, but would extend the timeline for repayment.
WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR?1) HIGH SCHOOL ROOF REPLACMENT - $500,000. Ballot language: replacing the high school roof 2) CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY$285,000. language: Acquiring and installing educational technology in school buildings; remodeling and
equipping school buildings3) OF TWO (2) BUSES $160,000. Ballot language: purchasing school buses
TCAS is also seeking the renewal of the 18 mil operating millage. The existing 1-year millage was 18 mills before it expired on December 31,2010. The millage request would restore the millage to the statutory 18 mills for 2011. A successful vote would not result in a cost increase tohomeowners.
Why does the ballot language say “increased by 18 mills”? Since we renew this millage every year, it must rst expire and then allow us torestore/renew the tax. That means the ballot language will read this is an 18 mill increase, when it is only restoring/renewing the tax which hasbeen approved by voters and collected for many years. Failure to approve this millage renewal would cost TCAS approximately $2,086,580 inrevenue that is used for instructional purposes, and would nearly double the impact of the cuts proposed by Governor Snyder.
If you have any questions please contact our Administrative Ofce at (616)636-5454.
When Sand Lake third, fourth, and fth grade students were givenan assignment to paint a picture of their favorite ice cream dish, theyall became excited. It was a subject they were all interested in, said artteacher Angie Beeman. The assignment came from Craig Moore andKathy Ortiz, owners of Rosie’s Ice Cream & More on Lake Street inSand Lake (formally named Cone Zone).
Laura Grice, manager and sibling to the owners, said, “People wereasking us what we were going to do with the blank, back wall of therestaurant, so Craig got an idea to have the students paint pictures.”
Of the three grades, 33 student’s pictures were chosen by popularvote. The students then traced their pictures on the wall before dippingtheir paintbrushes. Mrs. Beeman is overseeing the project and hopes tocomplete it soon. Stop in and see the student’s impressive work.
Please call the MacNaughton ofce immediately if you have astudent that will be entering kindergarten in the fall and have not madeappointments for their observation, hearing, and vision screenings. If you have not picked up enrollment forms or turned in completedforms please do so before the screening dates.
Kindergarten teachers will observe students during their scheduledtime, for one and one-half hours. We are scheduling appointments oneither April 29 or May 6 for student observations, hearing and visionscreenings. The State requires all students to have a vision screeningprior to entering school for the rst time. These are the only dates wewill offer screenings. Call our ofce immediately at 231-937-4380 toschedule or for more information.

P l e a s e C a l l !
It is Good to Feel Hunger – You are Burning Stored FatFor many of us the feedback mechanisms that operate within our systems are not programmed correctly. I have known
people that are triggered to eat more when they begin to feel full. Others are pushed to eat when they are stressed. Many will eat every time they feel a tiny hunger pang. In nature do you ever see an obese animal? No, only when we are feedingthem. So where have we gone wrong?
Most of it is from our past experience. Listen to some stories. If they sound familiar, you will be able to correct this issue for yourself and your children.
Last week I was examining an eight month old child. Every time this kid cried, mom shoved a bottle in this mouth. Thischild was learning to eat something every time something unpleasant happened. A crying child should be fed only if it is truly
feeding time.
I know a man who has struggled with his weight his whole life. At Over-Eaters Anonymous he recalled an event from c hildhood (age 4-5) in which his aunt had baked a three pound potato and he had eaten the whole thing. She and his mother bragged about this for weeks. He often sought recognition and comfort by eating starchy foods.
Often people in my age group belong to the clean plate club. My parents lived through the great depression and truly didexperience starvation. They did not waste food, and they always made us clean our plate at every meal. If we did clean our plate, we got dessert. I remember feeling stuffed, but would continue to eat to get the sweet dessert.
Frequently, I hear parents bribing their children with food. “If you are good, we will get ice cream”. Or “If you are good, we will go to McDonalds”. Or “If you are good, we will get Pizza”. But, I have never heard, “If you are good, we will get anapple”.
Television puts us into an Alpha Brain Wave State. This is much like a light hypnotic trance. Advertisersknow this and use it to program us to do things we might not normally do. Lots of advertising is about
food. Remember, “Where’s the Beef”? That ad has not been on TV for over 20 years and yet we areoften still affected by it.
So, many of us have been programmed to eat for reasons other than biological hunger. We need tosearch our past for these kinds of old out-dated programs. Then, in a quiet place, imagine going backin time before the programs happened and then play them forward in a different way. When we dothis, our brain now has a new point of reference from which it can operate. Now, when you are full,
you will not hear your mother’s voice in your head telling you to “clean your plate”, and you can leave food without feeling guilt. Have patience, do this a few times and see the results.
Watch what you say to your kids and grandkids. Limit TV and avoid the advertising. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Everyone has a bellybutton. Like bellybuttons, everyonehas one, that is, everyone hasan opinion about whether med-ical marijuana should be legal. That includes both the Federaland the State legislatures, andmany government agencies.
Washington has made marijua-na and its use an illegal, out-lawed substance/act, by an ex-press act of Congress. Federalagencies enforce anti-marijua-na trafcking laws. In manyother ways, the Feds ‘protect’us from marijuana. And ourstate legislatures have not beenoffended by that protection, forthe most part.
California rolled the ball. But despite Federal law, in1996 the California legislature
passed the Compassionate UseAct of 1996 making the medi-cal use of marijuana legal. Andthe ball started rolling. Medicalmarijuana advocates and pa-tients offer substantial, scien-tically proven evidence show-ing that marijuana providesotherwise unattainable relief from pain, and because mil-lions of American bones, backsand cancer victims need relief from extraordinary pain, thestates have gradually picked up
that ball and passed their ownversions of medical marijuanalaws. By doing so, have states
overruled the Feds? Can statespass contradictory laws? Howcan that happen? Will thosestate laws be repealed soon?
Whose job is it anyway? Well, we know that states can’toverride or overturn Federallegislative laws on subjectsthat are within the Federal gov-ernment’s power to regulate. And likewise, the Feds have toback off when the states ownthe powers. But whose job is itto regulate an individual’s useof marijuana for medical rea-sons? Federal and state powersare addressed by the U.S. Con-stitution and the Bill of Rights. It’s the 10th amendment to theBill of Rights that states therule: “the powers not delegat-ed to the United States by the
Constitution, nor prohibitedby it to the states, are reservedto the states respectively, or tothe people.” This means that if the Constitution did not give apower to the Federal govern-ment, and also if the Consti-tution did not prohibit a statefrom exercising a power, then that power ‘belongs’ to thestates or to the people.
Legislatures of states with med-ical marijuana laws, like Mich-igan, believe the Constitution
did not delegate the power toregulate an individual’s use of
marijuana for medical reasonsto the United States. Thereforeit was “reserved to the states”(by the 10th amendment). TheU.S. Supreme Court has had itssay – and it thinks differently. It has said that the Commerceclause gives the Feds the right
to govern the use of medicalmarijuana. But the states alsobelieve that because the U.S.Supreme Court is a Federalcourt, it can’t act as the judgeor the interpreter of the Consti-tution and decide between theFeds and states on a subject inwhich they have so great an in-terest – like individual medicalmarijuana use. Under Michi-gan’s interpretation of the 10thamendment, Michigan de-clared that it, and not the U.S.Supreme Court, gets to decidewho will regulate the use of medical marijuana. Michigandecided that medical marijuanause is Michigan’s domain, andthat its medical marijuana lawswill rule. In effect, Michigan’slegislature threw the Federallaw out. (The debate’s not overyet, but I hear singing…)

Most of us make a concerted effort to takecare of our cars. We get the oil changed andhave the tires rotated when we’re supposed to,and we have a mechanic take a look if it startspinging or dinging. Most of us even make surethe car is clean, either running it through a carwash or scrubbing it ourselves. But beyond thestandard washing, do we ever repair its nishor protect it? Do we wax it or polish it? Dowe even know the difference between the twoprocedures? Waxing a car and polishing a carare two different processes that use two differ-ent substances and achieve two different out-comes.
Waxing a car is in essence adding a layer of pro-tection. Waxing adds shine to a car and gives itthat wet look, but it also protects the car fromthe elements and ultraviolet light. Waxing also
protects the car’s color from fading and helpsdelay oxidation by forming a physical barrieragainst dirty, corrosive substances.
So, what does polishing accomplish? Whenyou polish a car you clean it. Polishing elimi-nates scratches, rust, dirt and wax. Polishescontain abrasives that actually remove a thinlayer of the car’s paint. Polishing also bringsout the color and adds shine.
As you might have already gured out, waxand polish are composed of different elements.Wax comes in two forms, paste and liquid. It
can be natural or synthetic, with natural waxcontaining a large amount of carnauba wax, derived from the carnauba palm.
Polish usually comes in liquid form but canalso be purchased in spray form. Polish can be
chemical or abrasive, with abrasive being usedmore for small areas of rust or scratches. Be-cause polish has the ability to remove a layer of paint, caution is recommended. Be sure to readthe application instructions thoroughly or yourcar could end up with a bare metal nish.
So which comes rst, waxing or polishing?Because polish can remove wax, obviouslyyou would wax your car after polishing it. Re-member, when you are waxing you are sealing. You’ve washed your car, you’ve polished it (re-moving rust, scratches and oxidation) and thenyou wax it to seal in all of your hard work.
Remember to read the instructions on any carcare product you buy and be aware of what’sgoing to happen before you start. If you havequestions or concerns, be sure to consult a pro-fessional.
Polish vs. Wax

Automotive Guide Gasoline By The NumbersBy Craig W. ArmstrongLiving with today’s economy can be a challenge. Prices
go up but paychecks often stay the same; making endsmeet can be tough. One way to confront this problem iswith math. You may consider math another four-letterword. However, better understanding where your hard-earned money is going can help you keep your nancesin line...and that takes simple math.
One cost that uctuates a great deal is the cost of gaso-line. One week it’s high and the next week it’s probablyhigher. If you know the mileage your vehicle is getting, however, you might be able to make adjustments andsave a few bucks.
Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key.Clean out your car once a week. If you spend any timein your car you are going to accumulate “stuff” duringthe course of a week. To keep these items from takingover the interior, you can throw them away, organizethem in the car or move them out of the car.
Although manufacturers indicate a vehicle’s city/highway MPG (miles per gallon), those numbers willuctuate based on the driver and driving conditions. Sohow do you accurately gure the mileage you are get-ting with your vehicle? First, prepare a worksheet torecord data; you can use a notebook or a computer-gen-erated spreadsheet. Whichever you choose, make sureyou have a column for each of the following: Date (onwhich you purchase gas), Odometer Reading, MilesTraveled, Gallons and MPG (Miles Per Gallon). (Forbudgeting purposes, you may want to keep a record of Amount you spent for gas also.)
Now head to the gas station and ll up your tank. Besure to use the lock on the nozzle handle so that thepump shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Donot top off the tank. Before you leave the gas station, record the date and the odometer reading and set yourtrip meter.
The next step is easy...just drive. When your fuel gauge
registers about a quarter of a tank, head back to the gasstation and ll up again. This time, record both yourOdometer Reading and the number of Gallons (foundon the pump) used to ll up your vehicle.
You can nd Miles Traveled in two ways. You can lookat your trip meter (if it hasn’t been accidentally reset)or you can subtract your current odometer reading fromthe original reading you logged on your worksheet. Forexample, if your rst odometer reading was 46,526and your current reading is 46,852, you have traveled(46,852 minus 46,526) 326 miles.
Next divide the miles you have traveled by the num-ber of gallons of gas you just used-let’s say 15.2, 326divided by 15.2-and you’ll have your miles per gallon. In this case, your MPG is 21.4. However, this readingis accurate for only this tank of gas. You will want toaverage several ll-ups to get an accurate idea of yourvehicle’s MPG. Averaging is easy; just add your milesper gallon notations and divide by the number of no-tations listed. For example, if you have recorded fourMPG gures on your sheet, 21.4, 20.8, 22.7, 19.7, addthem all together for 84.6. Now divide that number byfour and you have your average, 21.2 miles per gallon.
So, what do you do with those numbers? See if you canimprove your gas mileage. How? The rst thing is byperforming simple maintenance. Are the tires properlyinated? Do you have the oil changed regularly? Is theair lter clean? Next consider your driving habits. Doyou let your vehicle idle for long periods of time? Doyou often drive in stop-and-go trafc? Are you a “speeddemon”? Do you start quickly and stop suddenly?
Making adjustments and then checking your MPG willlet you know how much you are saving at the pump. The process will take minimal time, but once you getthe hang of it, you might nd it fun…imagine that, sav-ing money while having fun with math.
