community college enrollment hassoared by 49.8 percent since 1999-2000 even as K-12 enrollment hasfallen by 104,090 students or 6 per-cent.

Michigan community collegeenrollments have grown to the full-time equivalent of 161,223 students

as economically displaced workerschange careers and as new govern-ment incentives, including a new GIBill, encourage people to return toschool.

Peter Riley Bahr, a Universityof Michigan expert on communitycolleges, has completed the rareourney from community college

student to Ph.D. scholar. Bahr him-self spent a portion of his early col-lege years at a community college,and he began his research career atthe state ofce that administers allof Californias community colleges,which collectively constitute thelargest postsecondary system in theworld.

Besides conducting a great dealof research on the rapidly evolvingcommunity colleges, he is teachinga new course in January on com-munity college students.

More than any other type ofhigher education institution, thecommunity college draws studentsof incredibly varied backgrounds,pursuing academic objectives thatare equally varied, said Bahr, anassistant professor of higher educa-tion at U-Ms Center for the Studyof Higher and Postsecondary Edu-cation.

More growth is expected in theyears ahead. President Obama vis-ited Macomb Community College

in Warren last July to detail hisplans to invest $12 billion to meet

They also take that information backhome and share it with their caregiv-ers. Being healthy leads to fewer doctorvisits and an increase in overall health,helping families spend less on medicalservices.

Besides learning about health andnutrition, 4-Hers will also sing the na-tional anthem and lead the 4-H pledge before the game. There will be an op-portunity to get photos with Sparty, theMSU cheerleaders and possibly the Lady

Don was a member of theFirestone VFW Post #3383, aretired service station owner, anoutdoorsman and a pilot. Pre-ceded in death by his brothersAlbert and Jack Williams, he issurvived by his wife of 67 years,Dorothy; daughter Donna (Syd)

Richards; four grandsons, Gary,Neal, Wayne and Todd; threesisters, Marian and Lois Wil-liams, Margaret Senne; and aniece and nephews. The result could help researchers learnto enhance plants pollination success andeven could lead to high-grip nanomaterialsand green chemical feedstocks.

Surprisingly, our work on plant surface bio-chemistry became a birds and bees and owersstory, said John Ohlrogge, Michigan State Univer-sitys distinguished professor of plant biology. Itsa fundamental property of plant owers, and wevediscovered a basis of how these ridges are made.

Known for 75 years, the exact biological func-tion and nature of the ower nanoridges still eludesscientists. They might help pollinating insects grippetals, and retain glistening water droplets thatcould attract the visitors.

Because the ridges spacing is approximatelythat of visible and ultraviolet light wavelengths,moreover, some recent research suggests they pro-

duce an iridescent shimmer that attracts pollina-tors.

To start, visiting professor Mike Pol-lard and former Ohlrogge post-doctoralresearch associates Fred Beisson andYonghua Li tapped new genetic informa-tion to nd a mutated strain of the stan-dard research plant Arabidopsis thaliana mustard weed. The petals have no suchnanoridges because the mutation inhibitsproduction of a polymer that forms theplant cuticle, which separates cell wallsfrom plants waxy surfaces.

Examining the mutant plants owers and com-paring them to normal mustard plants under scan-ning electron microscopes, the researchers foundthat the ridges form from cutin polyester, not fromunderlying surfaces as some have speculated.

How that occurs from surface folding or un-even synthesis of cutin polymer across the cell wall,for example, has yet to be learned.

But the research will open doors to further re-search based on cuticular nanostructures, the re-searchers noted in a recent edition of the journalProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

That could include production of polyesters orrelated basic chemicals by genetically manipulating

plants or microbes, said Beisson, now at Aix Mar-seille Universit in Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, France.

In a recent study of 28,089 remedial mathstudents, Bahr found that only 28 percentcompleted a college math course. The reasonsfor the low rate of success are numerous, butone signicant problem is that severely de-cient students must take many courses andstay in college quite a long time to catch uptheir math skills, he says, adding that retain-ing students long enough to x severe skill de-ciencies remains challenging.

College Hoppng While most analysts look at community

college students upward transfer to four-year

colleges, Bahr found that 27 percent make lat-eral transfers from one community college toanother within six years of rst entering col-lege, resulting in substantial undercountsof the number of students who complete de-grees.

Given that the success of a community col-lege often is measured by how many of thestudents who began at the college eventuallygraduate, the large number of students whotransfer between community colleges gives amisleadingly poor picture of how communitycolleges are doing, Bahr said.

He also found that 34 percent of younger,traditional-aged students transfer laterallycompared to just 7 percent of the oldest com-munity college students (those age 50 andover).

Classifying students

Although it is widely recognized that stu-dents in community colleges vary greatly fromone another, Bahr is taking this understandingone step further by developing a classicationscheme based on students behaviors.

In a recent study, Bahr classied 165,921community college students into six catego-ries: transfer, vocational, drop-in, noncredit,experimental and exploratory.

Of particular interest, he found that 32percent of all rst-time students are drop-ins, who take just one or two classes, completethem successfully, and then leave college, ap-parently having achieved their goals.

This gives you a sense of just how variedthe goals are of students who are served bycommunity colleges, Bahr said. Some stu-dents just want to take a class or two for careeradvancement or other reasons, some want tocoplete a degee, and soe want to tanseto a four-year college. The community collegemeets all of these needs and more.

Enrollment at Michigans four-year univer-sities has grown 12 percent since 1999-2000,from 227,973 to 257,203, while communitycollege enrollment has increased by morethan four times that rate, hitting 11.7 milliontoday, or 44 percent of total U.S. college en-

rollments.Fifty-three percent of community college

students are age 22 or older, with the averageage now at 29. Many are employed full-time,36 percent are minorities, 17 percent are singleparents and 39 percent are the rst generationin their family to attend college.

When we think about how to improve thestate of the economy, especially the economyof southeastern Michigan, the community col-lege is at the center of the action, Bahr said.Whether were seeking to help the dauntingnumber of people who have trouble with read-ing, writing or math, or providing job skills tothe unemployed, or retraining laid-off work-ers, or offering a cost effective way for youngpeople to transition to a four-year college, itsthe community college that is going to provide

those services.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.In Michigan in 2008 there were 61,010 reported car-deer crashes with 12 motorists killed and 1,648injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.

(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in

the states highest accident rate).

What can you do?

Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.

Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.

Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.

Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.If a crash is unavoidable:

Dont swerve!

Brake firmly

Hold on to the steering wheel.

Stay in your lane.

Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
