    MONDAY,FEBRUARY22,2010RIVERVALLEYNEWSSHOPPER 5LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

    Reader thankscommunity for family-

    oriented eventsTO THE EDITOR:

The past few weeks there have beencomplaints about the Winter Festival inHoward City, and I am quite irritated bythe comments of an uninformed few.

My family and I enjoyed the winterfestival. We participated in the Fam-ily Friendly pancake breakfast. My boyshad a wonderful time on the communityprovided sledding hills, and I witnessedquite a few others warming themselves atthe bon re. Due to prior engagements wecould not participate in the activities pro-vided for children at the library, but we didtake a shot at the hockey shoot-out over atthe dentist ofce, put on by the HowardCity Skate Park Committee.

We enjoy the fact that Howard City istrying to plan family orientated activitiesi.e. Harvest Festival and Winter Festival. This being the rst Winter Fest, I under-stand there may be some glitches along theway.

I would like to thank the community

members who take time out of their busylives to come together to provide us withsuch events. Maybe if more communitymembers would get involved with com-mittees to better our community we couldreally make these festivals something to beenjoyed by all.

    GIna HOEzEE

Readers are glad to beback in the area

TO THE EDITOR:To the River Valley Shopper editor and

the coordinators of Winterfest,My family and I recently reestablished

ourselves in the Howard City area. We re-located here from the Traverse City area,

where every where you looked there wassomething to do. We were a little con-cerned moving back, as to what activitiesthe community could offer our family.Well, we could not have been more wrong.

My family is very pleased with every-thing Howard City has to offer. My wife, four children, and I took full advantage ofthe harvest Festival, and plan to do so againnext year. We also were thoroughly pleasedwith the recent Winterfest Celebration. We were very fortunate that Mother Nature

chose to cooperate. My children loved thesledding and we took the opportunity tocreate a snowman in our yard that the en-tire family contributed to. There seems tobe a well established balance between thechildrens events and an offering for theparents later. I realize that these festivalsare no small undertaking. With anythingthat involves the entire community it re-quires coordination, time, and volunteers.I just wanted everyone involved to knowthat we appreciate it and look forward tothe next community event.

    THE MulHOllanDs

    Reader unhappy with

    paper, criticismTO THE EDITOR:

This letter is written in response to thecriticisms published in the paper over thelast couple of weeks by persons who maynot be aware of what really happened atthe entertainment tent presented by Lati-tudes Roadhouse or what was offered toattendees at the rst Winter Fest.

First of all, I am questioning why TheRiver Valley Shopper would publish a letter, criticizing a charity event put on by a localorganization, from a citizen who was out ofstate on vacation at the time the event hap-pened. The entertainment tent is a popularfund raiser for The Field of Dreams Foun-dation which Latitudes sponsors and sup-

ports. The tent brought in enough money

for the foundation to give Helping Handsa check for one thousand dollars plus con-tribute to the foundation itself. I, myself volunteered on Saturday night and washappy to see many community leaders andfriends enjoying the music and having agood time chatting with acquaintances anddancing. As far as I could see, there was nodegradation or humiliation of women go-ing on anywhere in that tent.

Also, last summer a pastor did come totown and had a tent revival in the lot across

the street from Whites. No one pitched at.The second letter I am responding to is

the one that said that the Winter Festivalwas not community related and the accu-sation that childrenand the elderly werenot taken into consideration. There werechildren and family related activities allday long. Events included a hockey shoot, snow painting, fort building, snowakeshoot and a sliding hill. There was hotcocoa and coffee at the community bonreprovided by the Lions Club, a pancake breakfast to support the new skate parkand a snow mobile poker run. I hear thatnext year the committee is adding frozenchicken bowling and a sh shanty race. Ifthese arent family events, I dont know

what is. From what I understand, the Se-nior Center was asked to participate witha Euchre tournament and they declined. They could have had a band during the daywith dancing or something. Maybe offereda place for people enjoying the festival tocome in and warm up during the day onSaturday. They chose not to participate.

If individuals and organizations dont want to volunteer their time to help tomake the town a better place than otherscan only do the best they can. The groupsthat put on the Harvest Festival, the WinterFestival and the Tree Lighting Ceremonyaresmall and work hard because they careabout this community. My advice is to stopthinking bad thoughts about our town andget busy trying to make it better.

Editors note: The letters publishedin the River Valley Record Enterprise donot reect the overall opinion of the pa-per. Letters to the editor may be writtenby any member of the community whowishes to express their view of a certainissue. Letters should be in good taste andno longer than 500 words.

    Reader: You hadto be there

TO THE EDITOR: As President of the Montcalm County

Panhandle Area Chamber of Commerce, and after hearing of the results of the event, from Board Member Mark Stevens and Ex-ecutive Director Marianne Shepard, at ourmonthly board meeting I feel the respon-sibility to report to the community, to saythank you to the dozens of volunteers thatput on a really great community event.

For the rst annual Winterfest therewere 41 snowmobiles, with very little snow, that took part in a fun run. No less than 40people were involved in a Eucher tourna-ment. The Sliding hill had a large group of youngsters laughing and playing. One ofthe kids, I understand, is already suggest-ing improvements for next years slidinghill. The fort building at the Library wasa huge success along with the snow paint-ing.

The beer tent was a hit with the adults.Friday had approximately 200 attendeesand Saturday, I understand had another600 people. One of the best parts of thebeer tent is that a portion of the prots will be donated to Helping Hands. Our deep-est thanks to Lattitudes and Miller Lite forhelping such a great cause.
