    (StatePoint)Many experts have shared

their conclusions about howcable television and the Internethave kept countless Americanson their behinds for longer peri-ods of time. Ironically, while allthis has been going on, scientistshave been discovering the mostabout health and exercise -- andhow staying active can ward off a

range of illnesses as we age. What it comes down to is

this: there are fewer and fewerexcuses for letting your body runits course without exercise. Forseniors, in particular, exercisehas been linked to reduced riskfor such ailments as prostatecancer, osteoporosis, heart dis-ease and stroke, among others.

There has been much new re-search on the topic, with all signspointing seniors to the exercisemat and away from the couch.

Indeed, with one out of sixmen confronting prostate can-cer at some point in life, theProstate Cancer Foundation re-cently released a new Nutrition,Exercise, and Prostate Cancerguide, a series of new strategiesthat help stem the developmentand progression of prostate can-cer. Visit www.pcf.org to orderor download a free copy of theguide. The key is combining ex-ercise with a diet rich in fruitsand vegetables and low in pro-cessed sugars and refned carbo-hydrates.

A new study from Dr. Ste-phen Freedland at Duke and theDurham Veterans Affairs Hospi-tal also underscores the impactregular exercise has in protect-

    ing men from prostate cancer,

while also making the diseaseless aggressive.

More than anything else, thecombination of diet and exerciselooks to be a strong pre-emptivestep against many ailments.

With breast cancer a similarlydaunting disease among women, healthy options unsurprisinglyhave been linked to lifestyle, particularly exercise and nutri-

tion. With as little as four hoursof exercise a week and a low-fatdiet, the risk of breast cancer can be lessened. Abstaining fromdrinking alcohol has also beenshown to decrease the risk ofbreast cancer.

And there are plenty of ail-ments that plague both oldermen and women that can behelped by exercise. Among themis osteoporosis, which affects the bone density of people as theyage. By focusing on exercises thathave a direct impact on the skel-eton, like basketball or jumpingjacks, the symptoms of osteopo-rosis can be avoided.

New research also showsits never too late for seniors to become active. Even those af-icted with Type 2 diabetes canhelp turn things around with anexercise regimen. And its well-known that exercise can helpstrengthen arteries and poten-tially reduce the risk of heart at-tacks and strokes.

Of course, before starting anydiet or exercise program, seniorsshould consult their doctors. Butwhen it comes to health, a smallseries of simple lifestyle changescan help extend your bodys war-ranty, making a world of differ-

    ence in your golden years.

What would men be without women? Scarce, sir, mighty scarce.

LANSING Michigan Department ofAgriculture (MDA) Director Don Koivistotoday announced the United States De-partment of Agriculture (USDA) approvedshrinking the states Bovine Tuberculosis(TB) Modied Accredited Zone (MAZ) toa small area in northern Lower Michigan.

MDA also updated Michigans zoning or-der in Public Act 466, as amended, the Animal Industry Act to parallel the fed-eral changes.

MDAs zoning rule changes are effec-tive January 4, 2010.

After months of public hearings, ed-ucational meetings, and discussions withfederal regulatory ofcials, we are happyto report Michigan cattle producers andMDA are one step closer to concentratingour disease eradication efforts in the zonewhere we know bovine TB exists, Koivis-to said. Federal rule and zoning orderchanges are based on the national pro-gram and will help keep Michigan farm-ers in business while preventing spread

of bovine TB outside of the zone.Bovine TB is a contagious bacte-rial disease of cattle that can affect othermammals, including humans. In 1917,the federal government established anationwide Bovine TB Eradication Pro-gram. The program assigns status levelsfor each state based on the prevalence ofthe disease in that state.

In 1994, a wild Michigan white-taileddeer was diagnosed with a unique strainof bovine TB. As a result, MDA began acomprehensive surveillance plan to de-termine the extent of the disease in Mich-igans livestock.

Based on initial surveillance, USDAdowngraded Michigans Bovine TB FreeStatus in 2000 from Free to Modied Ac-

credited. This drop in status resulted inextensive restrictions on animal move-ment with burdensome regulations onMichigans cattle producers.

Since 1998, 46 Michigan cattle farmsand four privately owned cervid opera-tions have been bovine TB positive. Themajority of farms have been depopulated. In 2008, two cattle herds and one pri-

vately owned cervid operation were foundpositive, and in 2009 only one cattle herdand one privately owned cervid operationhave been conrmed positive for bovineTB - all of these farms were in the smallerMAZ.

    MDA, in partnership with Michigan

State University Extension, will launch anoutreach and education campaign. Pro-ducers in the affected areas will receivean informational packet on the changes. The new Michigan rules have differentregulatory applications for the followingzones and subzones:

Modied Accredited Zone (MAZ) -Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Osco-

da, Presque Isle counties and those partsof Iosco and Ogemaw counties north ofthe southernmost boundaries of the Hu-ron National Forest and the Au SableState Forest.

    Modified Accredited

    Advanced Zone(MAAZ)

    n Subzone 1 - Antrim, Charlevoix,Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, and Ot-sego counties.

    n Subzone 2 - Arenac, Clare, Glad-

win, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Missau-kee, Osceola, Roscommon, and Wexfordcounties, and those portions of Iosco andOgemaw counties not included in theMAZ.

nSubzone 3 - All counties in LowerMichigan not included in the MAAZ Sub-

zone 1, Subzone 2, or the MAZ.

    Bovine TB Free -Upper Peninsula

The proposed bovine TB zonal bound-aries were presented to the MichiganCommission of Agriculture on July 21,2009. Additionally, the proposed ruleswere published in the legal section of 16newspapers statewide, posted on boththe MDA and Emerging Diseases web-sites, and were presented at public meet-ings in July.

Go to the MDA and Emerging Dis-eases websites for a map and additional

information including a booklet explain-ing the Split State Status and Zoning Rulechanges at www.michigan.gov/mda orwww.michigan.gov/emergingdiseases.

The Split State Status rule is postedin the Federal Register under: http://ed-ocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-30128.htm.

    NORT AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE

Here are some noteworthy tips from pet ex-perts at North Shore Animal League America, the worlds largest no-kill animal rescue andadoption organization, on keeping your bestfriends happy and safe during the winter holi-

day stretch.n Candles or any open-ame objects should

be kept far out of your pets reach and never leftunattended. That tempting icker may attractpets, putting them at risk for burns or--evenworse--knocking it over and starting a re.

n Shimmering tinsel is a huge temptationfor pets, especially cats. Ingesting tinsel or rib-bons can not only lead to stomach aches, it canget wrapped around your pets intestines, caus-ing major problems, which may require surgicalintervention. Wrapping paper and glass orna-ments may also pose threats. If eaten, these cancause depression, upset stomach, vomiting ordiarrhea. Glass ornaments can cause internalbleeding if shards make internal cuts. So be cer-tain to keep these items out of your pets reach.n A holiday tree can be a problem. If its

not properly secured, a curious kitty or peep-ing pooch can knock it over. Water from yourholiday tree can also pose problems, so keep itcovered. Often, tree water may contain fertil-izers or preservatives which can lead to an up-set stomach. Pine needles are also dangerous ifswallowed, as they are sharp and have the po-tential to puncture intestines.n Holly, evergreens and mistletoe are com-

mon holiday plants that are toxic to pets. Poin-settia, though not truly poisonous, can causegastric upset if its sap is ingested. Use goodjudgment in placing these plants.

n Electrical cords are another potentialholiday hazard. Chewing on them can deliver aharmful jolt, burns, abnormal heartbeat, evendeath. Its best to have all cords secured and outof the way.

n Remember that people food and beverag-es can upset pets stomachs and some can evencause major illness or death. Keep fatty foodssuch as turkey or ham down to a minimum andtotally avoid onions, onion powder, grapes, rai-sins and chocolate. The best rule of thumb is tokeep people food and beverages for people.

You can learn more about pet health andsafety and pet adoptions and how you can helpNorth Shore Animal League America by visitingwww.AnimalLeague.org.

    AVOID HOLIDAY HAZARDS

LANSING As cold weathersettles in, Michigan residentslight their replaces and turn up

the thermostats to keep the chilloutside.

While the department doesntcontrol the price of these fuels,we know that citizens are feelingthe pinch of heating their homesand businesses. Every day, ourinspectors are working diligentlyto ensure consumers get whatthey pay for, said Don Koivisto,Michigan Department of Agricul-ture Director. Our Motor FuelsQuality and Weights and Mea-sures programs are on point forprotecting Michigans consum-ers pocketbooks from fraud, butalso strive to foster a marketplacein which businesses can compete

    fairly.According to estimates by the

National Institute of Standardsand Technology, weights andmeasures activities facilitate anestimated $170 billion in com-merce in Michigan. This includes virtually all of Michigans $71.3billion agricultural economy.

The rise in prices for fueloil and liqueed-petroleum gas

(LPG) are taking a more signi-cant bite out of consumers heat-ing budgets. MDAs inspectors

conduct specialized winter proj-ects to test delivery meters forthese fuels. Located in more ruralareas of the state, these truck-mounted meters require special-ized proving equipment, as wellas unique cooperation from oper-ators. So far in 2009, inspectorstested almost 300 fuel oil andLPG meters.

Its critical for Michigansconsumers to have condencein their day-to-day purchasesand the same holds true for the business community as farmers, producers, packers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers mustall have condence in the integ-

rity of commerce in Michigan, said Koivisto. So as you hit theroad this winter or turn up yourthermostat, you can be assuredthat MDA will continue to protectthe fairness and equity of thesefuels.

If you do suspect a weight ormeasure problem, call MDAs 24-hour hotline for reporting com-plaints at 1-800-MDA-FUEL.

Thehearts chambers were identified and flagged with vocabulary tags. Teachersassisted as needed, but the parents were the expert scientists in charge.

In addition to the dissection experience, the Montcalm Community

College nursing students provided stations to reinforce anatomy and CPRsteps. Students role-played emergency situations and how to start the CPR

process. Nursing studentshelped Edgerton studentsconstruct a lung modeland discuss the breathingprocess. All Edgerton fifthgraders did a great job ofparticipation and usingtheir science investigationskills. Edgerton teacherswish to thank the parentsand nurses for assistingin this exciting learningexperience.

A group of eighth graders participated in a service project that gave one

family a surprise this Christmas. The students began by collecting empty sodacans with a target goal of earning 300 dollars. Student J.J. Hubbard came upwith the idea ofcollecting cansa n d h e w a sinstrumental ingathering them.

    The groupreached their300 dollar goaland adopted afamily of five.They decidedto donate $50to the HumaneS o c i e t y a n d

Alexis Brock, and Amanda Hadd returned the cans for the deposit, shoppedfor the family, and wrapped the presents. During their shopping excursion, the four students were each responsible for purchasing gifts for one of thefamily members, but helped each other and worked together on the fifthmember. They shopped for three hours, Gary said.

We were looking for good deals, said Alexis. Each family member wascarefully considered and the students were happy with their purchases.

It warms your heart to help others and it feels good, said Tiffany. Allstudents said they would do this again in the future.

Mrs. Laskey and her students were awarded the best Christmas door in themiddle school. Her door displays a picture of the gingerbread baker (withMrs. Laskeys face) and the caption, My gingerbread kids are getting away!Oh dear! Students faces are pasted on gingerbread bodies, running awayfrom her. The word caption above the students reads, Run, run, as fast as youcan. Mrs. Laskey cant catch us, were the gingerbread kids!

This fall, the Tri County High School staff used their Professional LearningCommunity (PLC) time to lend a hand to Helping Hands of Howard City.Creativity reached across all curriculums as the Specials department hosteda tile painting workshop. Teachers purchased supplies for working witheither four or six tiles. During the PLC time on November 23, teachers andadministrators met in the art room to paint their tiles. On December 14, staffmet once again and transformed their tiles into coasters, trivets, or servingtrays.

Art teacher, Carole Nielsen, and woods teacher, James Cain, were thecreative forces behind the project. Mrs. Nielsen was able to have Glossiepaints donated by Maureen Roslanic of Service Reproduction Company. These

paints made it possiblefor teachers to paint adesign of their choice oneach tile. Mr. Cain andhis students constructed

the wood coaster holders, trivets and trays. Alsocontributing to theproject were Home Ec.teacher, Mrs. Rodgers, who baked the tilesand Mrs. Dollberg whohelped in organizing andcoordinating the event

with her November Charitees sales.Teachers really enjoyed the time and made some beautiful projects. The

final projects were soldfor ten and twelve dollarsa piece. Many of theprojects were purchasedby staff members to give

as Christmas presents.Proceeds from the tileproject were joined withthe profits from theNovember Chariteessales and over $660 wasgiven to Helping Handsof Howard City.
