2017 Ride To Flamm Orchards

September Falls and Fall Begins

By then time you read this the Chapter Z Fall Festival will be over that we will be heading into

fall full bore. The weather has been a little hot, but we just kept on riding and having fun. This

month has been a riding month for sure. We went a little out of way for a great adventure, go-

ing to unique Railroad Car for a great lunch in Sedalia, Mo. If you are in the area well worth

the stop, food was good and Marty’s report dessert “very good”. It was a long ride and it got

hot on the way home; but we survived for another day.

Next event was the Chapter W2 Fish; it was a great turn out. Our “Fry Cooks” are awesome, the

fish and potatoes were great. Everyone brought snacks and side dishes to share, desserts for the

sweet tooth and homemade ice cream to finish it off. Diane decided to surprise everyone with a

night at the movies, so the screen went up and with a few technical difficulties, the show went

on. We want to thank everyone that came and participated, it was a success again.

Southern Illinois Ride In has been going on for a long time; Diane, Lucy and I went over on Fri-

day and had a lot of fun with the Illinois folks. We then went back over with Chapter W2 mem-

bers on Saturday on the motorcycles. Walter and Jean were our guides to Flamms Orchard

which allowed us the opportunity to taste the “AWESOME” Apple Dumpling Ice Cream treat.

Believe me when I say “AWESOME”, we will go back for that. Also in Alto Pass, there is a

great little saloon, the Root Beer Saloon. Root Beer Saloon has a very unique décor with many

stuffed animals and geese (hanging from the ceiling) with a great menu in such a small town.

FYI, over the weekend we saw approximately 20 deer.

A few of us went the 11th Annual Dave Mungenast, Sr Memorial Bike and Badges Ride, 162

bike' took the police escorted ride. We watched them leave and called it a day, so for another

day we would like to go visit the museum across the street.

This month have a few things schedule, but you never know what else might pop up. We will

be having our Chapter W2 Fall Color Ride please note the date change to Sunday October 15.

Also the Chapter W2 Annual Chili Dinner, this year we will be doing People’s Choice of Chili

and Desserts. So dust off Mom’s or Grandma’s old Recipe for the best dessert you have to share

with the group. We know Chapter W2 has some great Chili Connoisseurs so let’s drop the chal-

lenge for the best dessert.

Leaves are Falling: When fall begins to set in, the falling leaves can present an unassuming hazard. Many people venture out to see the fall colors, presenting a couple of hazards. Drivers may be a little distracted and not paying attention to the road and further may not see you. Be sure to keep your distance from other vehicles. Also, as the leaves begin to accumulate on the roadway they can be very slick. Whether wet or dry, driving through stacks of leaves can reduce traction, making it difficult to stop. A simple reduction of speed and awareness can make all the difference. Deer Season: Fall riding can present some particular hazards, none more problematic than deer season. As crops are harvested, the area deer can forage is re-duced. Additionally, as farm equipment run through the fields, deer are being pushed into other areas and, in many cases, closer to the road. Hunters are also in the timber, pushing deer into other areas. We also have to consider this is the breeding season for deer and the fact they will be running more actively than normal. The best defense is to stay aware, particularly while in rural areas. Scan the roadway and just off of the shoulders and watch for deer crossings. Typically deer movement will peak at dusk and dawn. Areas where crops or timber are relatively close to the road will present the greatest challenge.
