the partly-submerged feline dragon was a motif commonly seen in Eastern Zhou art contemporary with the Western Han Dynasty on scabbard chapes, possibly given as a gift to a soldier or general, unprecedented artistry in terms of the carved figures moving freely off the boundaries of their square bases, origins of this carving style revealed by archaeology to be in Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hunan, and Guangdong Provinces in South and Eastern China.

, 2.3” x 2.6” x 2.6” — 5.8 x 6.6 x 6.6 cm.

Literature:

Estimate $10,000/15,000

Provenance: Property from an extremely renowned collector. Acquired in Tokyo in 1970s.

A RARE AND IMPORTANT ARCHAIC BRONZE WINE VESSEL AND COVER (YOU)EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 10TH CENTURY BC

the pear-shaped body swelling from a slightly everted base with an elon-gated foot, the rim topped with a domed cover with two spikes and a lobed crenellation, carved with two highly stylised taotie masks and dragon motifs carved in low relief reserved on keyfret ground, four sharp blades resembling the fierce eyebrows, with another four mythical dragons carved on the side of the cover, same theme of dragon motifs continues to the upper section of the body, repeated with the taotie mask motifs in the mid section, highlight-ed with the raised notched flanges dividing the panels, another eight drag-ons carved around the side on the waisted base, vessel with a carved long semicircular handle flanked by two high-relief bull-heads at the terminal, the bronze with olive-green patina and malachite encrustations.

The Western Zhou Dynasty continued in the steps of the Shang Dynasty with their bronze work, but introduced newer motifs such as the bull which sug-gests a greater emphasis on mortal versus immortal aspects of worship and ceremony. This piece is part of the phase known as the ‘transitional period’ of bronzework, seen in other examples featuring similar spiked spines rising up each side and the lidded body., height 11.6” — 33.5 cm., diameter 9.1” — 23 cm.

A VERY RARE AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHAIC SQUARE “DING” CAULDRONLATE SHANG DYNASTY13TH - 11TH CENTURY BC

The square body rising on a slight angle from four pegged legs to a lipped rim and two large handles, the frieze of two archaic kui dragons confronting each towards each other divided by a flange, the body decorated in oxidized bronze with archaic motifs of fierce taotie masks, two bosses imitating as the eyes of the masks with the notched flanges in the middle, this archaic motifs repeating on the other three panels, the bronze with a warm aged patina and green malachite.

Square Ding vessels of this type were the most rare and luxurious bronze pieces crafted by the Shang, used in ceremonial and religious practices by the imperial nobility. The taotie, or “ogre” motif, is very regularly used as a Shang and Zhou design, but eventually was reappropriated in Ming bronzework, jade, and ceramics on the Imperial level. The square Ding vessel type only had a short lifespan, with the latest piece found dating from the 10th century BC, and featured handles rising from each side rather than the early Shang handles which rose directly from the base of the body. However, the four legs protruding from the body of the piece do suggest Shang craftsmanship, as tripodal and leg-less bases became more common during the later Zhou Dynasty., 8.7” x 6.7” — 22 x 17 cm.

AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE IMPERIAL NUMBERED “JUN” NARCISSUS BOWL - NO. 3SONG DYNASTY

the flat bowl potted robustly with rounded sides supported on three brown ruyi-shaped feet, with an indented rim, mouled around the sides with two bands of bosses, all veiled in a brilliant violet purplish thick glaze coated by an olive tone along the rim, the dripping of the glaze formed an irregular honey-comb shaped throughout the body, the unglazed footrim burnt a caramel color around the countersunk base incised with the number “san”, which is three, the base with circle of small spur marks, interior suffused with the bluish lavender tone highlighted by the “worm-tracks” and glitters sandy splash., diameter 9.6” — 24.5 cm.

Estimate $50,000/70,000

Provenance: A private collection from “Fang De Yin Tang”<

A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL PAIR OF ENGRAVED “ANHUA” MONOCHROME WHITE BOWLS WITH COPPER RED FISH, YONGLE MARK AND PERIOD

the near-identical flaring conical sides rising from a short foot to a gently everted rim, culminating in waved rims with no lip, the exteriors decorated in a monochrome white palette with “anhua” engraving on the sides in the shape of repeating tendrils and bosses, the interior decorated with small copper red fish. Sizes range between 9 - 10.1 cm diameter, 3.3 - 4 cm height.

The political and economic stability of the Yongle Reign brought forward a period of unparalleled monochrome white porcelain firing at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, with access to trade and influence from the empires surrounding China. This piece, inspired by South Asian silverware saucers, bowls, and plates contemporary to the time period, is decorated with “sweet white” glaze, which gives the aura of translucency, known therefore as “semi-bodiless” porcelains, and is decorated with finely-incised “anhua” motifs found on other pieces, such as meiping, stem bowls and bowls, from this reign period. The copper red used to decorate the inside of each bowl is more often associated with Ming Dynasty blue-and-whites, but small spots on monochrome porcelain carry over from monochromes of the Song Dynasty such as Guan Ware.

Estimate $350,000/450,000

Provenance: Property from a prominent Canadian-English collector, acquired the

piece from China during 19th century, thence by descent.

The moon flask, also known as a “pilgrim flask” or a “raising the moon” flask, is a common yet elegant Qing Dynasty porcelain piece part of many museum collections including the San Francisco Museum of Asian Art and the National Museum of Taipei. The body, imitating more crude earthenware flasks taken by pilgrims across treacherous landscapes to ancient temples, has either rounded or flat sides, and often contains Tibetan symbols such as conches, asserting their role as items for Buddhist pilgrimages. The handles, usually mimicking archaic bronze work, often are carved into the shape of tendrils or scrolls rather than elephants., height 11.8” — 30 cm., diameter 9.4” — 24 cm.

cave base, the trumpeting neck culminating in a flared rim with a defined lip, the exterior

decorated in a beautiful blue and white palette, the base decorated with a repeating

motif of fleur-de-lis tendrils below a row of intricate arabesques, the body decorated with

a unique pattern of scrawling lotus flowers, peonies, and tendrils surrounding two Yuan

The Yuhuchunping vase shape, derived from smaller Song Dynasty variations, features

one of the largest bodies of elegant imperial wares, although many vases of this variety

sport either shorter necks or flat rims with no flaring. A similar fencai vase from the

Imperial Palace Museum supports this claim, although blue and white pieces were more

revered in China as testaments to more ancient varieties rather than export wares.,

AN IMPORTANT AND ELEGANT FAMILLE ROSE “FLOWER AND BIRD BALLS” LANTERN-SHAPED VASEQIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD

the tall cylindrical body rising from a slightly everted foot with a concave base, the wide neck culminating in a flared rim with a large lip, the elegant vase painted in a famille rose palette, with small “flower and bird” balls of decoration arranged asymmetrically and scattered across the body like medallions, with limited or no overlap, the flower balls painted in shades of pink, yellow, green, turquoise, purple, red, and light blue depicting numerous types of flowers, some with dragonflies, crickets, and butterflies, the bird balls a combination of natural and aviary scenes with sparrows, robins, and cranes, some feasting on purple berries, square xuanshu mark in underglaze blue on base.

Originally fashioned at the Imperial kiln site of Jingdezhen, it was the 17th-century Japanese tastes of the Yongzheng Emperor that allowed this “ball” motif to pass into the Qianlong Period. The more geometric citron and chrysanthemum blooms were used as an artistic symbol of the Emperor, visible near the neck of the vessel. By this point, however, the Japanese motifs, not the inspiration itself, has disappeared in favor of traditional floral and bird scenes seen on traditional Qing and Qianlong vessels., height 11.6” — 29.5 cm., diameter 4.6” — 11.8 cm.
