    Call for MakersRising Stars 2014: touring exhibition and 3 applied arts commissions

    Rising Stars is a platform to foster and champion students and recent graduates from BA andMA applied arts programmes across the UK. The programme will consist of three parts: thetouring Rising Stars exhibition to enable new makers to access the market place; professionaldevelopment including knowledge transfer and skills exchange, a national symposium; and apublication to act as a promotional tool for the selected makers. Rising Stars aims to offer new

    makers their first step into the market place, through a curated, selling exhibition that tours toNew Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, Milton Keynes Arts Centre, Milton Keynes and Smiths Row,Bury St Edmunds, and a free programme of professional development.

    We are delighted present an award of 1,000 towards a winners professional development,support from a-n, the Artists Information Company, and further exhibition opportunities.

    We also welcome proposals for three site-specific commissions in each venue. The fee for thecommissions is 400 per commission (all-inclusive). Please visit the venue before making aproposal.

    Exhibition and professional development events at Smiths Row, 7 June 12 July 2014Submissions are invited from:

Successfulapplicants will be covering their travel and delivery costs to Farnham and collection costsfrom Bury St Edmunds and agree with the terms of display and sale. Your work will beinsured during the displays.

    Rebecca Skeels, a designer-maker and a subject leader for the Post Graduate Schoolof Crafts and Design, the University for the Creative Arts.

    VenuesRising Stars is managed by the New Ashgate Gallery in partnership with Milton Keynes ArtsCentre and Smiths Row.

    Originally established in the late 1950s, the New Ashgate Gallery is located in aseventeenth century listed building in Waggon Yard since the 1970s. During the years, thegallery has administered the profits from craft and art sales to create prizes andscholarships, and for the purchase of artworks for local and national museums. It was oneof the first provincial galleries to show artists with an international reputation as well assupporting local talent. Today, the New Ashgate Gallery is a destination for buying the bestof affordable contemporary craft by established and emerging makers. The Gallery curatesan exciting programme of changing exhibitions and has an affordable gift shop. As a not-

    for-profit charity, it also fosters emerging makers in partnership with the University for theCreative Arts through mentoring and touring exhibitions such as the Rising Starscompetition. It also supports diverse community participation through a programme ofgallery and outreach workshops.

    Milton Keynes Arts Centre is an independent arts and education charity established in1974. Located two miles from central Milton Keynes, our site is set within the impressivegrounds of Great Linford Manor beside the Grand Union Canal. It includes a gallery, set ina 17th-century barn, studio space for six creative practitioners housed in historicalmshouses, a school house, creative work spaces located within two pavilions andspecialist workshop facilities including ceramics, silversmithing and woodwork. With a focuson craft, design and the visual arts Milton Keynes Arts Centre provides a unique platformfor practitioners to develop new ideas, presenting live opportunities to share exemplarycraft, design and visual art practice, often in response to our location. Our year roundprogramme offers exhibitions, residencies, artist led workshops, professional development

    events and artists studios, as well as a caf and retail space.

    Smiths Row, established in 1972 as Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery, curates and presents anannual programme of exhibitions and events which inspires new ways of thinking andnurtures creativity. Our programme explores both contemporary art and craft through soloand thematic shows featuring works predominately by emerging and mid-career artists.Increasingly we work with artists to commission and present new works that are inspired byour historic building or relate to over-arching themes we are exploring. Smiths Rowsupports artists and makers through professional development programmes and on-goingone-to-one surgeries. We also develop the market for contemporary art and craft through

    our Craft Shop which showcases work by British makers, our annual Christmas craftsexhibition, and through commissioning artists limited editions and multiples.

    Rising Stars 2014 is supported by Arts Council England.
