Rising Grade 7 Language and Literature resources: If you want book recommendations for the coming summer, one great source is the Newberry Medal winners. Newberry books are consistently outstanding. For globally focused texts, I have enclosed a list of age appropriate suggestions for 7th graders. Please feel free to be in touch if you have any questions or would like additional information. The Boise Public Library offers great support. Their summer reading program has already started and is open to all ages. Please note that the program has changed this year; people do not need to sign up and there are not separate programs for children and adults. (Details are available online.) After you complete your first five activities, you can claim a free book! In addition to thinking about how often and what they will read, I encouraged students to think about writing and discussion goals too. One student has a goal to convince everyone in her family to read what she is reading so they can all talk about it together. Fantastic! You can continue to help your children think about goals that are specific and joyful. In addition to fiction, reading nonfiction and current events over the summer will support students' growth. Ms. B recommends reading current events alongside your child and asking them questions. Please don't hesitate to touch base if you have any questions or we can support your family in some way. Summer Big Read! Riverstone’s Middle and High School Summer Read is a shared intellectual journey for all students in Grades 6-12. This is the second year of a regular experience each summer for our students. Students purchase and read the selected book over the summer and prepare a short response paper highlighting something they find particularly compelling with regard to the theme that drove this year’s selection. As an alternative assignment, they can make a soundtrack for the book by picking a song/ piece of music that fits each chapter of the book. For each selected song the student should write a no more than 50 word explanation of how the selected song fits a particular chapter of the book and how it relates to the theme. Each student should be prepared to discuss what they feel a meaningful or purposeful life for them would be.

(Details are available online.) Summer Big Read!

As an alternative assignment, they can make a soundtrack for the book by picking a song/piece of music that fits each chapter of the book. For each selected song the student should write a no more than 50 word explanation of how the selected song fits a particular chapter of the book and how it relates to the theme.  Each student should be prepared to discuss what they feel a meaningful or purposeful life for them would be.

During the first week of school students will meet in small groups for a discussion and reflection seminar led by a faculty member or administrator. These seminars will afford students a chance to meet their peers and to begin conversations based upon their shared readings and initial written reactions.

The theme that drove this year’s selections was:  living a purposeful or meaningful life Grades 6-7 - The Inquisitors Tale: or, The Three Magical Children and their Holy Dog.  Adam Gidwitz.  Order paperback version.

Rising Grade 7 Summer Outline

The summer outline is a great resource for students who have just completed 6th grade Math. The Khan Academy links below are divided up by units: number theory, algebra, geometry and measurement, stats and probability, and coordinate geometry that will take students directly to the recommended exercise.

This summer I highly recommend that each student review the concepts that they have learned in 6th grade math to reinforce their learning in preparation for the 7th grade math course. I highly encourage each student to work through the outline about 1-2 hours a week throughout the summer.

Please take advantage of this opportunity. Doing this will help each student enter into 7th grade Math with a fresh understanding of the concepts from the previous year and will help them with their success next year.

• Links highlighted in RED are assumed knowledge for next year• Links highlighted in BLUE are concepts we have covered. We will review and build

upon them next year. • Links highlighted in PURPLE are a few concepts you will see next year.
