Core 40

Minimum requirement for most 4 year colleges (However, some colleges may require additional math credits beyond the 3 years required for Core 40… Ex.: IU, Purdue).

6 credits of math required (6 credits must be earned in grades 9-12)

Foreign language is not required (However, some colleges highly recommend/require at least 2 years of a foreign language).

Academic Honors• In addition to completing all requirements for Core 40, students must:

• Earn 6 or 8 credits in foreign language• Complete 8 credits in math including (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus or

Trigonometry/Probability and Statistics) *strong math skills are needed• Earn 2 fine art credits• Complete AP and/or Dual Credit classes required or students must meet a minimum score on the

ACT/SAT• Earn 47 credits required in which students can earn no grade lower than a “C”.• Graduate with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher• Students can take a non-credit study hall each semester of high school and still met the 47

required credit count for AHD.

*Academic Honors is highly recommended for some competitive Indiana colleges.

Technical Honors• In addition to completing all requirements for Core 40, students must:

• Earn 47 credits required in which students can earn no grade lower than a “C”.• Graduate with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.• Earn 6 credits in the college and career pathway (Area 18 program).• Earn an industry-based certification or credential, or 6 career pathway dual

credits.• Complete AP and/or Dual Credit classes or meet a minimum score on the

ACT/SAT/Accuplacer.

*Students can take a non-credit study hall each semester of high school and still met the 47 required credit count for AHD

8th grade teachers provide recommendations to assist in proper placement of students in ELA, Math, and Science courses.

Required Courses and Explanations:

Language Arts

English 9

English 9 Honors – summer homework required, more in depth, teacher recommendation

English 9s – struggling with reading comprehension

Mathematics

Algebra Lab A/Algebra 1 A – 2 year algebra

Algebra 1

Geometry Honors – for students enrolled in Algebra 1 in 8th grade

*students who took Algebra 1 in 8th grade and did not earn an A or B are recommended to retake it in 9th grade. Students need a strong math foundation to complete additional high school math for a Core 40 diploma and beyond.

Biology Honors – more in depth, teacher recommendation

Earth and Space – encouraged for students who are taking English 9s

In addition to these 9 required credits, students will select 5 elective credits to fill their 9th grade schedule. For scheduling purposes, study hall is included in the 5 elective credit count even though a student doesn’t earn high school credit for the class.

Steps to Register for 2020-21 Courses

1. Check credits needed (use your Indiana diploma

requirements checklist)

2. Check grade level course selection sheet

3. Access PowerSchool through the NHS Website

4. Enter courses under class registration

Click on the registration tab

Click on pencil icon to view course options for each subject.

Select the course(s) that meets your graduation requirement for each subject. You must press okay after each subject screen. If you are enrolling in an all year course, you must select both semesters. Once you have all required classes selected, you must choose 4 alternate classes. Your total should equal 14.

You are finished when the requesting credit hour number equals 14. Remember you have to choose 4 alternates you would be willing to have if there is a conflict.
