HISTORY OF RISHIKESH

The whole area (Garhwal) was famous as Kedarkhand in the past as mentioned in the

Skanda Purana. As per the Skanda Purana the area is named as Kubjamrak because here lord

Vishnu appeared to Raibhya Rishi under a mango tree. Raibhya Rishi selected the place for

his long penance (Tapasya or austerity) Lord Vishnu was pleased by his act and appeared to

the sage as a "Hrishikesh." The word is combination of two word Hrishik and esh. Hrishik

means senses and esh means god or master. It means god of senses. The Sthala Purana states

as follows: "Raibhya Rishi preferred the sacredness and beauty of the place where Lord

Vishnu appeared, so he remained there in the form of intense plants, which look like his

matted locks. In consideration of this and the divine qualities of Raibhya Rishi, the area

recognized as Rishi Kesha or Rishikesh, or the hair of the Rishi (Sage). Skanda Purana

mention that the Lord Vishnu blessed Raibhya Rishi and gave him this divine message:

"while you have performed supreme tapasya (austerities) by controlling your senses, let the

place be recognized as Hrishikesha (Lord Hrishikesha, master of all senses).

The place is also mentioned as place where God Vishnu defeated the mighty demon Madhu.

As per the Ramayana Lord Ram made hard penance for killing mighty demon Ravana.

Lakshmana (Brother of Lord Rama) crossed the river by Jute Bridge which is known as

Lakshman Jhula. The Jute Bridge was replaced by Iron suspension bridge in 1889. The bridge

damaged in 1924 flood, than bridge was replaced by new bridge.

Legends also mention that the Lord Agni (God of fire) made penance for Lord Shiva.

According to the legends Lord Shiva consumed poison (Halahal) which was obtained during

sea churning (Samudra Manthan) along with the Nectar (Amrit). The place is now known as

Nilkanth Mahadev Temple. Kunind was the first one to rule the area. Later Shak kings and

Naga Kings ruled here. In 1398 Vatsraj was the king of the area. Ajaypal was the king during

1493 1500. During the 1804 to 1815 Gorkha Kings rule the whole area. After 1815 East India

Company came here. After freedom the area is merged in Uttarpradesh. In November 2000

Uttaranchal became independent from Uttarpradesh. From January 2007 Uttranchal was

named as a Uttarakhand.

In 1880 Swami Danaraj Giri established Kailash Ashram. Swami Sivananda (1887-1963)

founder "The Devine Life Society" lived here in Muni Ki Reti for 03 decades. Parmarth

Niketan is estab/>lished by Swami Shukdevanandji. The Beatles came to Rishikesh in the

1960s to study yoga, and since then the city has styled itself as the "yoga capital of the world.

Rishikesh is town in the Dehradun District of Uttarakhand state in India. Total population of

Rishikesh is 75,020 (53% male and 47 % female) as of 2001. Rishikesh is situated at 409

meters above sea level in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayan Range and surrounded by the

Shivalik range. Rishikesh is 35 kms far from Haridwar, 90 Kms from Mussoorie, 25 Kms far

from Jollygrant airport Dehradun, and 240 kms far from New Delhi.

Rishikesh has spectacular view of jungle-clad hills. Rishikesh has also confluence of River

Ganges and Chandrabhaga. The glorious attraction of Rishikesh is none other than the great

river Ganges herself, running rapidly throughout the city. In the ancient time and still so

many yogis, rishis, sages and sannyasis attracted to Rishikesh to practice yoga in this

peaceful location. Since then, Rishikesh has known as an abode of sages. Rishikesh is a holy

town with so many Ashrams and it is famous for the yoga world wide. Rishikesh is now

world famous as a Yoga Capital of the world. Every year during the March month one week

long International yoga festival is hosted by Rishikesh.

Rishikesh is also known as gateway to the Char Dham. Char Dham is four popular holy

temples on the hills (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri) Thousands of people

attracted every year to Rishikesh for spiritual relief, peace, learn yoga, adventure and to take

a dip for salvation. The famous among them were Beatles, Kate Winslet and many more

others celebrities. It is believed that by meditation in Rishikesh one can get "Moksha"

(liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth) as well as holy dip in the river Ganges.

Apart from spirituality now Rishikesh is also hub for the adventure activities such as rafting,

camping, trekking and bungee jumping. Rishikesh is full of tourist every time. There are also

big ashrams, centers for Yoga, Meditation, Ayurvedic Massage and astrology are here.

Rishikesh is also known as the white water rafting capital of India.

Two big suspension bridges play a major role (such as nerve system in body) in day- to- day

life of Rishikesh. These two bridges (jhulas) are know as Ram Jhula and Lakshman

Jhula(Named after lord Ram and his brother Lakshman, the heroes of the Ramayana, who

Page 7: Rishikesh

supposedly crossed the river Ganges at Rishikesh on their way up to the hills.). Rishikesh is

divided loosely in many parts such as Rishikesh, Ram Jhula (Shivanand Nagar), Muni Ki

Reti, Lakshman Jhula or Tapovan and Swarg Ashram, Pashulok Barrage, Dhalwala, 14 Bigha

and Shisham Jhari.

From Ram Jhula one can take a boat on sharing basis or walk on the bridge to cross the river.

Both sides of the bridge is always crowded with shops of cloths, holy beads, shawls, precious

and semi precious stones, replicas of deities, astrological gems, Ayurvedic medicines and

Vedic treatises as well as signs of marketing yoga, meditation classes and Ayurvedic

massage. Other side of the bridge is known as Swarg Ashram area. So many big ashrams are

here such as Swarg Ashram, Gita bhawan and Parmarth Niketan. When you cross the river

temples welcomes you with their engraved deities and music shops greets you divine sacred

ragas.

In evening beautiful Ganges Ceremony(Ganga Aarti) is organized at Parmarth Niketan and

Triveni Ghat. The Brahmin Pundits (priests) performs Ganges Puja (ritual worship) with

Vedic hymns, sound of hands clapping and the drums (tabla). Hundreds of people come to

witness this Pooja and offer leaf bowls which are filled with flowers and small oil lamps to

the goddess. The small sparkling lights floating lamps, river Ganges and auspicious

atmosphere creates such a magnificent view and feeling that can attract anyone to join the

prayer even the visitors from outside India who can't understand the vedic songs.

Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a small town in the northern state ofUttarakhand in India. Scenically located

where the Ganges River comes down from the Himalayas, Rishikesh catapulted to Western

fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram (now

closed), and the town is still known as the World Capital of Yoga.

Rishikesh is also the Gateway to the Himalayas. The Char Dham Yatra (Four Shrines Sacred

Journey) ideally begins from Rishikesh.

The center of town where the train and bus stations can be found is of little interest to most

travelers. Further north-east are 2 bridges spanning the Ganges, Ram Jhula and Lakshman

Jhula , at either end of these bridges are the main hubs of activity and interest.

Most accommodation and restaurants can be found near Lakshman Jhula, High Bank and

Swarg Ashram.

Rishikesh is in close proximity of Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (about 15 km) - a small,

quiet and recently renovated airport handling just two flights from Delhi. The runway is

being extended and will possibly then handle flights from other metros.

Delhi airport to Rishikesh by car is a good option for a hassle free traveling specially for

foreign tourists who are traveling to India for the first time. It's a 6 to 7 hours journey. Prices

vary from US$ 85 for an air conditioned compact car to US$ 125 for an air conditioned SUV

(but rates are much higher if one avails these services from prepaid taxi booths located at the

airport).

A quiet branch line connects Rishikesh to Haridwar, but there are only about three slow

Page 9: Rishikesh

trains daily. It is better to take the train to Haridwar and continue by bus (45 min, Rs.30), by

taxi (30 min, Rs.800) or by shared auto-rickshaw (40 min, Rs.35). However, travelling by

train is recommended in peak seasons or during a 'mela' (fair) when bus routes are diverted in

Haridwar whereas trains often run empty and the fares are low (just Rs.4 for a passenger train

service). You can take share rickshaws (vehicle brand name Vikram) towards Lakshman

Jhula (Rs.15) from Rishikesh station. You will have to cross Ram Jhula to reach Swarg

Ashram on the other side of river Ganga. There are many trains from Delhi to Haridwar.

Some of the better are: Shatabadi Express, Jan Shatabdi, AC Special Express, Mussoorie

Express. Travel agents in Swarg Ashram and Lakshman Jhula can book train tickets for

onward journeys; much easier than going to Rishikesh railway station to buy a ticket. Some

may sell you a ticket from Raiwala, a small stop between Rishikesh and Haridwar, but this

station, while closer, is tiny and trains only stop for a few seconds - better to board the train

at Haridwar.

From Delhi the city is about 230 km away and is well connected with buses. A bus journey

Page 10: Rishikesh

may take about 5-7 hours - depending on the traffic - and costs you about Rs 130-350. An

AC Bus will cost about Rs 250-700. In Rishikesh, there are several travel agencies scattered

around Swarg Ashram and Lakshman Jhula that can book luxury buses to common

destinations like Delhi (Rs 250-700), Jaipur, Pushkar andVaranasi. The right time to visit

would be February, March, August-October. In July there is a festival called Saavan where

thousands of people flock to Rishikesh. Major roads are blocked and hotels are crowded. It is

better to avoid travelling to Rishikesh during that time.

Auto-rickshaws (vikrams) are useful from the bus/train stations to get to either of the bridges

(Rs 10) and for the southern side of the Ganges. Swargashram is pretty much pedestrian only,

but it's compact and walkable (as is the whole of the town). For other autorickshaw journeys

you should expect to pay around Rs 15/km.

Take a holy dip in the Ganges, with reputed healing powers.

Check into an Ashram to study yoga, meditation and Hindu philosophy.

White Water Rafting Rishikesh is very popular for its rafting on the River Ganga

(Ganges). Season: September-November and March-April-May are ideal for rafting. The

rafting will go on for several kilometres, and the path is interspersed with rapids, ranging

from Level 1 to Level 5, in order of difficulty. At the end of the trip, you have the option

of jumping some 20 feet from a ledge into the water. There are several local travel

agencies, offering these rafting trips. The package usually includes an overnight camp on

the banks of the river, with a brilliant and dangerous trek among the hills in the morning.

If one has time, courses in rafting are also offered.

Camping is a recreational activity that does not have any age limit. Any individual who

likes to explore new places and enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature can embark on a

camping voyage. Camping in Rishikesh on the Ganga beach offer an environment to

wake up with the birds cher chew and can swim in the fresh water of the river Ganges.

Camping in Rishikesh is a very popular activity.[8]

Rappelling Climbing down with a rope is called rappelling. The group is taken to a spot

where there is a cliff drop, experts with proper equipment who setup the gear first and

then, one by one, everyone comes down. It's all about trusting your gear and following

the instructions and then it's a lot of fun.

Rock climbing This is something everyone is familiar with, this is also included in some

Page 13: Rishikesh

of the camps but not everyone can do it as it requires a lot of strength and skill. The

group is taken to a cliff side and with proper safety gear everyone is given a chance to

climb the cliff side.

Cliff Jumping You are supposed to jump into freezing water from a cliff! Yes, it sounds

crazy but this is one thing which everyone can brag about back home, of course you are

wearing a life jacket and a helmet but still to jump from so high into the Ganga which is

murky and the bottom can't be seen, it's not like jumping into a swimming pool where

one can see the bottom the water is static.

Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving across water. Kayaking is differentiated from

canoeing by the fact that a kayak has a closed cockpit and a canoe has an open cockpit.

They also use a two bladed paddle. Another major difference is in the way the paddler

sits in the boat. Kayakers sit in a seat on the bottom of the boat with their legs extended

out in front of them. Canoeists will either sit on an elevated bench seat or kneel directly

on the bottom of the boat. Whitewater kayaking is the sport of paddling a kayak on a

moving body of water, typically a whitewater river. Whitewater kayaking can range from

simple, carefree gently moving water, to demanding, dangerous whitewater. One can

learn this sport by taking kayaking courses from [9]

Trekking There are lot of soft treks available around Rishikesh. Some of them take you

to beautiful and hidden waterfalls. These beautiful natural wonders are 2-6 kms from

Laxman Jhula and are hidden in the nearby forest[10]. One also has the option to trek to

Neelkanth Mandir(11 Kms). It is advisable to go in a group than wandering in the wild

alone and risking your life.

Near By Excursions There are many small excursion/sight seeing tours for half day or

one day. Like to Vashishtha cave, Kunjapuri temple (1700Mts), Neer Gaddu Water fall,

Mussorie, Haridwar. Guides and taxi can be booked in many travel agencies. For more

information or booking you can also call at 9927213649 or 0135-2440111.

Non-vegetarian food has been banned in the city for many many years. North and south

Indian food is widely available, and there's no shortage of multi-cuisine backpacker cafes,

especially in Lakshman Jhula. What excites many foreigners is the delicious Ayurvedic and

health food restaurants, perfect for an after-yoga meal. Many of the main lanes are lined with

wooden push carts selling in-season fruit, veggies, Popcorn, nuts, warm cookies and lots else,

and you'll usually be quoted a fair price. The papayas here are particularly delicious. Try the

famous Chotiwali Special / Janata or Delux Thali . Once upon a time it used to be an

unlimited affair but now due to practical constraints the quantity is limited and extra helpings

are charged. There are several eateries offering jalebis, imartis, samosas, and other Indian

snacks. If you haven't heard of these before, you should definitely try them out.

Mukti's Health Food , (a few hundred metres west of Shivanand Jhula bridge,

overlooking the taxi stand/parking lot). A tiny place in a strange location, but very

popular and excellent food at very reasonable prices. Homemade green pasta, Indonesian

gado-gado, and homemade frozen yogurt, apple pie or chocolate cake for dessert.

Page 20: Rishikesh

The Welcome Center, (about a 10-15 minute walk towards Haridwar from the

Shivanand Jhula bridge), Hidden down off the road (but signposted), this is a little oasis

of calm from the busy street. Great Ayurvedic food and teas. They also offer cooking

classes, several types of yoga, etc. and sell natural incense, neti pots, yoga mats and the

like. If you like the atmosphere, enquire about staying here as well.

Shiva-resort, a nice place away from the bustling market of Ram-Jhula towards

Neelkanth road in Jonk village a great place to have organic food and you also can stay

there in a silent and pleasant place.

Chotiwala in Swarg Ashram claims to be the original, and serves up great Indian food

including 5 different thalis. Meals starts from Rs. 100.

Ganga Ayurvedic Food Place, (out beyond most of the ashrams, just past VED Niketan

Ashram). Delicious food, lovingly prepared. One of the cleaner kitchens around, don't be

afraid of the good salads. Also great for breakfast.

Little Italy, Swarg Ashram, (in the Green Hotel). Good pasta, pizza, etc. Mains from Rs

30.

The Office. Has amazing sweet samosas filled with mango, apple, banana and/or

chocolate as well as the best Massala Chai in town (some say: in India!)

will serve you any food you like. Be prepared to wait 40-90 minutes as the place is

extremely popular. 10-200.  edit

Sitting around in dhabas and cafes is nearly mandatory here. In addition to the old

standards like masala chai and lassis you can find a nice range of Ayurvedic teas. Some

restaurants make up their own tonics to treat anything that may be ailing you.

Lately two Italian style/Seattle style cafes have popped up. Their main focus is on the

coffee.

Alcohol is banned and inappropriate, as Rishikesh is a holy city, although you can buy

beer (8% alc) to your meal in one of the finer hotels.

Sleep

Rishikesh is filled almost entirely with budget hotels, with a few mid-range thrown in for

good measure. Lakshman Jhula is popular with backpackers and has the cheapest

accommodation, while Swarg Ashram is where the majority of the ashrams are located, and

is a nice alternative. There's also a handful of accommodation options in High Bank.

It's wise to book ahead in the peak tourist season, and during the Kumbh Mela in

neighboring Haridwar.

A holy city it may be, but Rishikesh draws more than its fair share of criminals and conmen.

Page 29: Rishikesh

Don't walk around alone at night and beware of the motives of sadhus offering one-on-one

tutoring. There is also a gem stone hoax going on in at least one gem store: They ask you to

bring the stones to your own country to a "buyer" who doesn't exist.

Watch where you step:After sundown it is pitch dark, so bring a light. Watch out for the

sometimes brash food stealing monkeys too. They mostly "operate" on and around the foot

bridges, and if you look them in the eyes they become aggressive, but rarely/never attack

unless you carry food. Sadhus and police officers carry sticks to keep monkeys and

cows/oxen at a distance. The brown monkeys are aggressive; the grey big languors are nicer.

They greys sometimes steal food from tourists (not on the bridges), but mostly because their

size scares the tourist, they don't bite you over food matters.

Be alert if an ox is on your path: They are mostly harmless, but after dark they are sometimes

nervous. Especially on the narrow foot bridges, you should try to read their body language

before a close encounter.

Try not getting involved with any local guide, whose offering you services. They are mostly

con men and goons.

CONCLUSION:

Governments and the tourism industry have an unprecedented opportunity,

particularly through support of RISHIKESH to exercise policy leadership in

pursuing a common vision for tourism in India.

The National Tourism Strategy provides a foundation for a long-term,

coordinated approach to sustainable growth of the tourism sector. By working

collaboratively, public and private sector tourism stakeholders can continue

building an internationally competitive tourism sector for its future generations.

Governments and industry have taken the first step to improving cooperation

and collaboration among governments and industry. The next steps will be to

continue to work together to advance the Strategy, and to implement the

"priorities for action" set out on the two previous pages. All governments, in

partnership with their industry, must bring to bear their resolve to turn actions

into results.
