RISE & WAlkThe Sacraments of Healing LIfe NIGHT OUTLINe

CATEChISM# 1422-1484 # 1499-1525

SCRIPTUREmark 2: 1-12 Luke 15:32 James 5:14-15

kEY CONCEPTS• This night will focus on God's

power to heal and cure through the Sacraments of Healing.

• God desires to make His children whole, both spiritually and physically.

• In a way we are all the paralyzed man in the Gospel of mark seeking healing from Jesus.

gOAlThe goal of this night is to understand the power of the Sacraments of Healing both spiritually and physically. God is not only our loving father but He is also the divine Physician that desires to heal our brokenness and make us whole.

AbOUT ThIS NIghTThis night will be broken into two segments each with the same parts; part one will focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and part two will cover the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The whole night will be centered on the story of the paralyzed man found in mark 2:1-12.

The night will begin with the skit acting out mark 2:1-9 (the first part of the story of the Paralyzed man). The skit will transition into the part one of the teaching and small groups. After about ten minutes of small groups everyone will gather back together to see the second part of the skit: mark 2:10-12. When the second part of the skit ends the youth minister will finish the teaching and the same small groups from earlier will meet again. After the discussion questions the teens will stay in their small groups— the Core members will pray with each teen. The night will end with a time of praise and worship.

PARENTAl NOTICEThis night will focus on the power of the Sacraments of Healing and God's desire to heal us, both physically and spiritually. God is not only our loving father but also the divine Physician that desires to heal our brokenness and make us whole. Here are a few discussion questions that you and your teenager can talk about:

1. Why is spiritual healing more important than physical healing? 2. How did the Paralyzed man experience both kinds of healing?

NOTESENvIRONMENTThe environment for this night will be the skit environment based on the Scripture of the Healing of the Paralytic in mark 2:1-12. The majority of the skit will take place at the front of the room. This is where the Jesus character will be performing the skit. Jesus will be in a house. Set up three sides of the house with either screen dividers or curtains. You will want the audience to see what is going on so have the "house" open up to the audience. This story takes place in Capernaum in the region of Palestine so feel free to add to the environment with palm trees, sand, etc.

WElCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS (5 min) The youth minister should gather all the teens together and welcome them to the Life Night. Introduce any teens at Life Night for the first time.

hEAlINg ThE PARAlYTIC SkIT- PART 1 (5 min)The night will begin with a skit. This skit will reenact the Healing of the Paralytic as read in mark 2:1-12. You will need at least nine people to be involved in the actual skit — the narrator, Jesus, the paralyzed man, Pharisees and four people to "carry" him. (You may want the four men to be strong Core members so they can carry the paralyzed man. They can carry the paralyzed man in a few creative ways: carry him or push him in a wheelchair, if you have access to a stretcher you could use that, you can make a platform with a wide piece of plank wood and rope handles, or you could literally carry him by both arms and legs.)

Healing the Paralytic Skit Part 1 can be found on pages 55-56.

"RISE & WAlk" TEAChINg (10 min)The first part of the teaching will focus on the power of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. draw comparisons between the paralytic man's sins begin forgiven and the forgiveness offered in Confession. Also emphasize the point of spiritual healing and God restoring our souls to wholeness.

The teaching can be found on pages 50-52.

"I CONFESS" vIDEO (5 min)This short video follows a teen through the experience of the Sacrament of Confession. If time allows, use this video as a transition into small group discussion.

SMAll gROUP DISCUSSION (15 min)After the teaching the youth minister should break the large group into smaller groups for the first of two small group discussions. Begin your small group in prayer and use the following questions to guide your discussion.

• The friends of the paralyzed man went to great lengths to get their friends to Jesus. Have you ever worked really hard or gone to great lengths for your faith?

"RISE AND WAlk" TEAChINgPART 2 (5 min)This part of the teaching will focus on Anointing of the Sick and the power of God to heal. draw comparisons between the paralytic man's healing and the Sacrament of the Sick. emphasize the point that God wants to make us physically whole but sometimes that doesn't always happen; there is greater purpose to our suffering.

The teaching can be found on pages 53-54.

SMAll gROUP DISCUSSION (15 min)After the teaching the youth minister should direct the teens to return to their small groups. Begin your small group in prayer and use the following questions to guide your discussion.

• Why do you think Jesus forgave the man's sins before He physically cured him?

SEND 10 Minutes

• Why were the Pharisees and scribes so closed off to Jesus? Have you ever been resentful of God's work or God's forgiveness?

• do you believe that God can cure people today? Have you ever experienced this?

• What about the people who live and die with physical suffering — do you think there is a purpose?

• What do you need healing in your life for? How do you want God to make you whole? (This question will transition into the Send)

• Relate this healing to the Sacrament of Confession. What is similar to the Sacrament?

• does God desire to make you spiritually whole? do you desire for your sins to be forgiven?

• do you ask Jesus for healing? What areas of your life/ soul need healing?

bREAk (PART 2) 15 Minutes

PRAYER IN SMAll gROUPS (10 min)Set a tone of prayer by lowering the lights and having music play in the background. Place a cross, crucifix or another focal point at the front center of the room. The youth minister should come up and offer direction for the remainder of the night.

The teens will stay in their small groups and reflect on the last small group question. (See above.) Then one at a time the Core members will pray with each teen in their small group for their specific intention. (Other Core members or adults can step in and help to speed up the process.) Ask the teen "What do you need healing for in your life? Is there something specific that you want God to make whole?" After the teens shares, the Core member should take about one to two minutes to pray for that specific intention with that teen. The other members of the group should be silently praying and meditating with the music playing. Once the teen has been prayed with encourage them to go to the front of the room and continue praying before the cross.

Once each teen has been prayed with and is gathered around the cross, play a song of thanksgiving. encourage the group to praise God for his power to heal, forgive, and cure. This should be a time to honor and thank God for being the divine Physician.

The youth minister should close with a prayer and end the night with the Hail mary and Ave maria.

SACRAMENTS OF hEAlINgWe can become closer to the Lord and learn to follow Him by our participation in the sacraments. However, many times we fail to do this and we fall away from our Lord. Our Lord came into the world so that we all may enjoy His friendship and favor. To reunite those who have fallen away from His grace, the Lord has instituted two Sacraments of Healing so that we can be restored and renewed in His love.

We shouldn't consider these sacraments as insurance policies for salvation or as permission to sin, thinking we can go and get forgiven whenever we're ready. We should strive to do good and avoid evil at all times. This is how we can grow in virtue.

As we continue to grow into adulthood, we will start to ask ourselves: What am I going to do with my life? Where is God calling me? Am I living my life in the best way possible? If we discover that there are any obstacles in our relationship with God, we can be confident that there is hope in the Sacraments of Healing. They are both available to us so that we can restore our relationship with our Lord and come to know Him more deeply.

PENANCE, RECONCIlIATION, CONFESSIONThe first Sacrament of Healing is Reconciliation. It goes by a few names: Confession, Reconciliation and Penance are all terms used to describe the same thing. It is the sacrament in which we go to the Lord, acknowledge our sinfulness and ask for His mercy in order to restore our relationship with Him. It's the part when we actually go beyond feeling sorry and we go and say we're sorry.

Baptism removes all personal sins we may have. following Baptism, we still sin. Confession is where we can restore what we lose through sin. Christ calls us to conversion and to repentance. Confession is where we can continue to answer this call—by turning again to the Lord after we have veered too far from His path.

God alone has the power to forgive sins. After all, a sin is an offense against God Himself. In the Bible, Jesus forgives sins and shows that He is God. Think about the story when Jesus heals the paralytic: He tells the man that his sins were forgiven. When His enemies questioned His ability to forgive sins, He shows them His authority by miraculously healing the man physically.

Jesus is clear in His intent. He knows only God has the power to forgive sins, but He allows the apostles to serve as priestly stewards of this ability, giving them the power to forgive sins in the name of God. After the Resurrection, "He breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.'" This is a very clear decree. WhAT DOES CONFESSION DO?The sacrament has particular effects. firstly, the sacrament forgives us of all sin. Christ's crucifixion is the fuel for this ministry. We are all saved through Christ's death on the cross, which opens us up to salvation. Our Baptism joins us to this event and makes us heirs to the glory of Christ. When we sin, we squander our inheritance like the prodigal son, and we need to return to the father. This sacrament absolves us of our sins and lets us reconcile our relationship with God.

The sacrament reconciles us not only with God but also with the Church community. every sin is both an offence against God and an offence against the mystical Body of Christ. As Catholic Christians, we are not alone. You cannot be Catholic by

yourself, and your sins do not only affect only yourself. Reconciliation restores this relationship.

Aside from wanting to restore our relationship with the father, you and I approach the sacrament of Confession in order to remove the consequences of our sin—to beg the Lord for mercy. In Confession, the sinner anticipates that their actions make them unworthy to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. "In converting to Christ through penance and faith, the sinner passes from death to life and 'does not come into judgment.'"

Lastly, Confession offers us consolation. Sometimes we can feel very guilty for something we've done. Have you ever had a friend find out that you said something mean about them? Or have you ever let someone down who was counting on you? These moments can crush us and hurt our relationship. In Confession, the Lord offers us a way in which we can relieve our anxieties and guilt we experience for our sins. Confession offers us peace and serenity of the Lord's forgiveness.

WhAT'S REqUIRED FOR A CONFESSION?To be forgiven through the Sacrament of Confession, a person must have contrition. "Contrition is 'sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again.'" Contrition is necessary for forgiveness of mortal sins. This contrition can be "perfect" contrition, whereby a person regrets offending God by their sin, or it can be an "imperfect" contrition in which the person fears eternal suffering and is prompted to receive mercy in the sacrament.

To be forgiven, a person must confess their sins. By openly admitting personal sins, a person "looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for them, and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible." This is why just feeling sorry and telling God does not substitute for going to Confession and openly admitting grave sins.

What would happen if you hurt a friend by your words or actions? The relationship would suffer. Could you fix this by only feeling sorry? Would you restore the friendship by ignoring the problem? In this situation the two people must openly and actively confront the situation. Confession is when we get our chance to confront the situation we've put ourselves in concerning our relationship with God.

ThE PROCESS OF CONFESSIONBefore going to Confession, it's recommended that a person examine their conscience. This means that they investigate their life and identify the ways in which they've failed to love God with all their heart, mind, and soul and in ways they've failed to love their neighbor as themselves. There are many guides to aid in this process.

In the tradition of the Roman Church, Confession is celebrated according to a standard formula. Sometimes this can vary depending on circumstances, but the elements remain the same. The person will approach a priest ready to hear their confession. The priest will begin by offering a prayer or sign of peace and invite the penitent to confess their sins. After this, the confession happens. The penitent goes through and confesses to our Lord, through the ministry of the priest, the things he is sorry for doing and the sins he's committed since his last confession (or since baptism). everything that a person remembers ought to be confessed.

Sometimes we are embarrassed about our sins. It's ok to be embarrassed. That feeling tells us that what we did was wrong, but it shouldn't be a reason not to confess the sin. You don't have to worry about shocking the priest. He's not going to judge you or look down on you for what you've done because the sacrament is not for judgment; it's a Sacrament of Healing! Think of the woman caught in adultery.

Afraid for her life and embarrassed by her sins, our Lord pours out His mercy upon her. The priest's job is to do the same—to offer us an encounter with Christ, our spiritual physician.

following our confession, the priest may offer some words of encouragement or advice on how to live in the future. He then gives us a penance to perform after our confession in order to amend our relationship with the Lord and asks us to say an Act of Contrition to express our sorrow. Lastly, he absolves us. This absolution is not the priest's forgiveness; it is Christ's forgiveness that He earns for us through the sacrifice of the cross. When the priest says, "I absolve you from your sins," the "I" is Christ. We then go forth to do penance, sin no more, and avoid whatever leads us to sin with the help of our Lord's grace found in the sacrament. This leads our soul to be thankful and to want to offer our Lord thanksgiving for our forgiveness and His love.

Sometimes the sacrament is within a Reconciliation Service in which the community would gather at the church to reflect upon scripture, hear a homily, and together examine their consciences. following this there would be private confessions.

In danger of death or other grace circumstances, a priest may absolve a person or an entire group of people at once by administering a general absolution. This is given with the understanding that should those people find safety and the opportunity to later confess their sins in the usual way that they do so as soon as possible or else they remain guilty of any grave sins they may have had.

WhY CONFESS TO A PRIEST?The priest (or bishop) is the minister of the sacrament. Christ gives His apostles the power to forgive sins. The bishops and priests receive this authority. Remember, only God can forgive sins, so it is not the priest who directly forgives us. Priests are able to directly forgive sins in God's name so that we may know of His mercy. Some people think, "Can't God forgive me on His own? Without a priest?" The answer is yes, He could, but we don't know how He could or, more importantly, if He does. We do know that on earth, Christ instituted the Sacrament of Penance for the forgiveness of sins and gives us the priesthood to make this direct forgiveness possible in our world.

Priests are not priests so they can find out all of our deep, dark secrets in Confession. They are priests because they want to help the Church and help the members of the Church come to know and love our Lord. In the sacrament of Confession, this is of utmost importance. This is why every priest is bound to the seal of confession, which means that they can never, ever tell another living soul what they are told in confession. "Given the delicacy and greatness of this ministry and the respect due to persons, the Church declares that every priest who hears confessions is bound under very severe penalties to keep absolute secrecy regarding the sins that his penitents have confessed to him. He can make no use of knowledge that confession gives him about penitents' lives." There are no exceptions to this rule.

RISE & WAlk TeACHING-PART 2

ANOINTINg OF ThE SICkmost of us have little or no experience with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When we were younger, we were probably told that it's a sacrament to help sick people get better. Unfortunately, this is not really what happens or what the sacrament is for. Anointing of the Sick reminds us that suffering is part of being human In the face of suffering, people can find themselves in anguish, in despair or depressed. Suffering can also make someone more mature, able to realize the things that really matter in life and to forget about the things that do not. When a parent loses their job, the family experiences suffering. They can either dwell on the negative or realize the positive—that they still have each other and that things can always be worse.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is for those who find themselves in a state of suffering due to illness or other bodily ailment. It is a sacrament that brings the afflicted to Christ, the physician. In the Gospels, "the sick try to touch him, 'for power came forth from him and healed them all.' And so in the sacraments Christ continues to 'touch' us in order to heal us." This healing is not always a bodily healing, but a spiritual one, giving us necessary strength and will to endure the sufferings of life and to prepare us for our death. Sometimes physical recovery comes from this sacrament as well, but we have to understand that it is not a magic spell to prolong life.

St. James instructs us in his letter, "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the [priests] of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven." This is the scriptural basis of the ritual of Anointing of the Sick. It allows us to tap into Christ as our healer, through the ministry of His priests, in order for us to be raised again. This resurrection is our hope of life in the Kingdom of the Lord. It is the hope of His mercy shown to us that we maybe holy and blameless in His sight.

Over the centuries, the sacrament became something that you only received at the point of death. Through the development of liturgy, the Church recognizes the need for all those who are seriously sick to have access to this sacrament. With those who are dying in mind, the sacrament has always prepared them for death. The sacrament also prays for the person's recovery if their recovery would benefit their soul. In other words, if the person is not spiritually ready to be judged by our Lord, sometimes the Sacrament of Anointing allows them to recover so that they may make their peace with the Lord before their death.

Christ's own suffering should be kept in mind when we experience any suffering. Christ experienced much human suffering in His life on earth. His suffering shows His humanity. Christ physically healed many people of their sufferings, but He did not heal everybody's. This is important to remember because physical suffering is a consequence of Original Sin. "His healings were signs of the coming of the Kingdom of God. They announced a more radical healing: the victory over sin and death through his Passover." We remember the story of the paralytics who was healed in St. mark's gospel. His physical healing was a sign of the greater spiritual healing of God's forgiveness.

experiencing physical sufferings can help us grow in true holiness. Christ invites us to follow Him and carry our own crosses. By following our Lord in earthly suffering, we are made more like Him, able to better receive the father's grace. "He makes [us] share in His ministry of compassion and healing" when we enter deeper into

our own humanity through a Christian perspective. In this way, we are confident our suffering is not without purpose.

Through the sacrament, the Holy Spirit gives certain people the real gift of healing. This healing is not always a physical cure, but a supernatural grace of healing—of restoring—a person's innocence, peace, and grace.

WhAT hAPPENS IN ThE SACRAMENT?"The first grace of this sacrament is one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age… By the grace of this sacrament, the sick person receives the strength and the gift of uniting himself more closely to Christ's Passion."

The sacrament also forgives a person of any sins they are unable to confess due to their condition. This is why only priests (and bishops) can administer this sacrament—only they have received the authority to forgive sins on behalf of our Lord.

The Church encourages reception of the sacrament "as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age." (CCC 1514). This means any baptized Catholic is eligible to receive it and is ready to do so as soon as it is necessary. "If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person's condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.

MAN #1: We have never seen anything like this.

MAN #2: This man, Jesus, He must be from God. He commanded

this man to walk and now look at him!

The paralyzed man is overjoyed and begins running and leaping while praising God. End with the man kneeling in

front of Jesus, bowing down in gratitude.
