OFSTED

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between vocational qualifications and A Levels?

A Levels are assessed mainly through exams, whereas diploma courses are assessed mainly by coursework. In terms of UCAS points, Level 3 Diploma vocational qualifications are often equivalent to three A Levels.

Do you need to study A Levels to get into university?

No. Students studying Level 3 vocational qualifications, such as the BTEC (Extended) Diploma, can gain up to 168 UCAS points (depending on their grades) which is equivalent to 3 A* at A Level. Apprentices can also progress to University Level study or Higher Level Apprenticeships (Level 4).

What is the application deadline?

We don’t have a deadline for applications, in fact, our applications stay open until late September 2021! However, if your young person knows what they want to do, it’s best to get their application in quickly as some courses are very popular.

Even if your young person starts a course they’re not happy on, our 6-week transfer window at the start of their course will ensure they continue on the right course for them.

GUIDE TO COURSE LEVELS

Study from Entry Level all the way to degree level at Stamford College and University Centre Peterborough.

A Levels

Studying A Levels will give you a broad knowledge base and although A Levels are traditionally an academic, theory-based route, we pride ourselves on our modern approach, which includes practical elements, live projects, community work and a dedicated A Level Honours Programme. To find out more about our A Levels and our guide to choosing the right subjects, see page 32.

Diplomas

These vocational subjects allow you to gain the practical skills and knowledge to progress straight into employment in industry. Most Level 3 Diplomas are equivalent to 3 A Levels and are an alternative route to university. If you prefer to learn in a hands-on way – this is the route for you!

English & maths

If you have not achieved a 4/C in GCSE English and maths, it will be mandatory for you to continue to study English and maths alongside your main qualification. We will assess your need for this at enrolment in the August before you start your course, and we will ensure you receive the support to achieve these whilst studying your chosen qualification.

A GUIDE TO APPRENTICESHIPS

Learn and earn at least £124.50 per week! 25,000 apprenticeship vacancies are available online at any one time. 90% of apprentices go into work or further training.

What is an apprenticeship and where can it take you?

To kick start any career you are likely to need a combination of experience and qualifications. An apprenticeship gives you both, by combining on-the job training with study. An apprenticeship is a real job. It’s a way to:

• Earn a wage and learn at the same time, with at least 20% of your time set aside for learning at College or in the work place.

• Gain an official certification of your skills, equivalent to qualifications ranging from Level 2 up to degree level.

• Start a long-term career path with the possibility of higher earnings.

• By successfully completing your apprenticeship, you’ll have gained the confidence and skills needed to progress in your chosen career.

• Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of industries and organisations, from local businesses to large national brands.

Who are apprenticeships for?

Many apprentices are school leavers and young people, but there is no upper age limit. If you’re over 16, living in England and not in full-time education, then an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. Apprenticeships are available across a huge range of industries, whether it’s business, construction or hairdressing. Stamford College offers both Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships with higher apprenticeship opportunities potentially available in some areas - you’re sure to find something to suit you!

What are the wages like?

The minimum wage for apprentices aged 16-18 is £124.50 per week (£4.15 per hour), however, this increases each year. For the latest apprenticeship minimum wage visit

www.gov.uk/apprenticeships-guide. Many employers choose to pay more and higher apprentices can earn as much as £500 per week!

What hours will I work?

Apprentices work a minimum of 30 hours per week and training is included as part of your apprenticeship. You will typically be in College 1 day per week but some apprenticeships are carried out entirely in the workplace.

Do I get holiday pay as an apprentice?

Yes, apprentices get a minimum of 20 days paid holiday per year, plus bank holidays.

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

First, find an employer. Visit our website for the latest vacancies. If there’s not something for you in there, don’t worry, the National Apprenticeship Service has lots more! Then register your interest by filling in the form on our website. If you haven’t got an employer yet, register or apply anyway, we may be able to help you find one. Next, we will assess your application and establish any support needs you may have. Finally, earn while you learn! Start your workplace training with your employer and commence your programme of study.

MATHSCENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Stamford College was one of only 21 FE institutions in the country to be named a Maths Centre of Excellence in 2019.

Stamford College was proud to be named a Maths Centre of Excellence in 2019 after receiving funding to develop new methods and enhance maths teaching.

The College is one of 21 further education institutions in the country to be recognised for their impressive maths provision and the high outcomes achieved for students. The institution provides an opportunity for students at all levels to succeed and progress in maths, from those with no GCSEs to those who need to increase their grades. The centres are designed to test and share new ways to teach students who are re-sitting their maths and will share £40 million over the next five years to help them in providing this new and innovative way of learning.

Paula David, Project Director at Stamford College said, “The Maths Centre of Excellence will give students the motivation and opportunity to learn with methods that suit their preferences and build on their existing skills. This will be through personalised learning programmes, supported by high-quality teaching and learning and integrating online learning assessment and feedback, combined with rigorous tracking and monitoring.

Staff will be supported throughout the process to be up-skilled in developments in maths mastery and will use technology to support teaching and learning. We’re proud to be paving the way for an innovative maths programme to support and empower students to achieve their maths qualifications.”

The model will benefit over 800 students and the College aims to collaborate with other colleges to improve achievement and attainment in maths.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a grade 4/C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll re-sit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT A LEVELS

When choosing your A Level subjects, you need to ask yourself some difficult questions, but we are here to help!

Choosing the Right A LevelsChoosing the Right A Levels

Which subjects do you enjoy the most?

This is the most important question. We want you to be happy during your 2 years at Stamford College.

What do you want to do after A Levels?

If you want to go to university, you may need to do some research to find out which subjects are needed for the course you want to study. Some universities require you to study at least two facilitating subjects, to check visit: www.informedchoices.ac.uk.

What career path are you interested in following?

If you have some idea of what you want to do in the future, it may be useful to find out which A Level subjects you need to be studying. You can contact professional organisations to find out which qualifications they require.

Do you prefer coursework or are you better at exams?

Some subjects have a 20% practical coursework component, while the majority are all exam-based. If you are good at organising your own time, coursework-based subjects will work well for you; if not, it might be better to avoid these subjects.

Which subjects go well together?

It might seem like fun to do computing, history and physical education but what kind of career would require this mix of knowledge and skills? Some subjects complement each other, maths and physics, for example, or media, graphic design and photography. So think carefully about the mix of subjects you choose.

How many subjects should I choose?

You will study 3 A Level subjects, plus tutorial and career development sessions. Each subject has 6 hours per week class time, with approximately 4 hours of independent study. You will be taught by lecturers with lots of experience and your own personal tutor will help you develop the independence and skills you need for the next step in your career.

Linear Subjects

A Level subjects are now linear meaning that your final exams will be undertaken at the end of your second year. In order to progress to Year 2 you will need to achieve a D grade or above in the end of Year 1 exams.

What if I do not meet the entry requirements?

You may be considered for A Level study if you do not meet the requirements. You would need to come in for an interview and discuss this with us.

3332

“I would encourage anyone to consider learning a trade, male or female. In an increasingly uncertain and automated world, your skills will always be in demand. I think there is a bit of a misconception that plumbing is just fixing leaks and unblocking toilets, but that is not the case at all. There is so much scope for career progression; becoming qualified on the Gas Safe Register, venturing into the rapidly advancing sector of renewables, there’s so many opportunities to find your niche. Ladies should consider that there are many elderly and vulnerable people out there, who feel safer with a female tradesperson working in their home.”

Enjoy the freedom to express your creativity and independance. Our vocational courses will develop your skills and help you stand out to secure a place at any university. Stand out with Stamford College.

“My favourite thing about College was the freedom to express my creativity, they allowed me to have that independence that really put me in a good place for starting university. During the course I learnt how to manage my own work and use my creative skill set to its full potential, they provided the guidance, knowledge and resources that made me feel confident when moving onto my next step. For me the 2 years of College were the most important as a designer, having always had a passion for the more creative subjects, taking that leap from school and focusing all my skills and energy on a more direct course really benefited me later on in life. Stamford was the starting point to my journey as a designer. The skills taught and the resources available were a higher standard than any school in my local area, it put me ahead of the game when it came to starting university with a diverse skillset and creative flare within my portfolio when at interview. I feel without the experience and teaching on this course I wouldn’t be where I am today. I graduated with a First Class Honours, studied in Hong Kong after being awarding a Scolarship in my 2nd year of university and recently featured in magazines like Vogue. I can’t thank Stamford College enough for everything they helped me achieve.
