    EXT. JOHNSONS USED TEXTBOOKS - DAY1 1

An old, faded brown brick, one-story building with big windows all over the front sits in the same spot its been at

for over 50 years in a small northwestern town.

A dated sign out front reads Johnsons Used Textbooks - Est.1958.

A dark blue, 7 year-old Honda Civic pulls into one of theparking spots out front. Inside, Daylight Fading byCounting Crows plays, pumping but muffled through the closeddoors. The guy inside sits in the drivers seat and singsalong as he unfolds a heat shield into the front windshield.

He kills the engine and stereo, cracks the windows and stepsout, carrying a Taco Bell cup. This is IAN MANN, 28, dressedin Target business casual. Hes bland with a heart of bronze.

He checks the time on his phone and enters the front door.

    Just in time.

INT. JOHNSONS USED TEXTBOOKS - FRONT ROOM - CONTINUOUS2 2

Its dusty in here and it looks like it hasnt beenredecorated since the 70s, at least. The carpet is thin andlight brown and the walls are covered with fake woodpanelling.

Ian nods at the receptionist, BETTY, 54, large and not-so- much in charge.

    BETTYTaco Bell, huh?

    He pats his stomach.

IANIt tastes good, at least. What didyou eat?

    BETTY

    I brought my lunch.IAN

    Good for you.

Ian makes his way to his desk about 15 feet away from Betty. This main front room is filled with file cabinets and a fewlarge desks.

Ians is covered in random papers, mail and legal pads. Hetaps his keyboard and his computer screen brightens back up.His computer is from 2003 and its probably the newest thingin here.

    He gets to work.

A few moments later his boss BOB JOHNSON, 52, stops by. Hesa hefty guy with a mug of coffee with the word BOOKS on itin his hand. He passes Ian a sheet of paper.

BOBThat order from Pocatello finallycame in.

    IAN(reading)

Oh okay. Wonder what took so long.

Bob shrugs and takes a sip of his coffee.

BOBThey finally got that BSU orderloaded.

(shakes head)45 boxes of Biology books. There

    mustve been a book burning.

Ian nods with a small grin.

BOB (CONTD)Well, Ill leave you to it.

    He walks off.

Ian looks over the fax Bob just handed him. He scratches hishead, trying to make sense of it. He looks over at Betty andanother coworker, DARREN, 44, both are focused on whatevertheyre doing.

Ian looks back at the paper and cant seem to get his headinto it. He sets it thoughtlessly on the gigantic desk infront of him where its just one more of too many sheets oforder forms.

    Hes bored.

He turns and looks out the huge window next to him. A fewlonely cars pass by quietly. Theres an abandoned buildingacross the street with its windows all boarded up.

Ian cant take his eyes off it. Hes thinking aboutsomething. He looks back at his paper and its Greek to himright now. He blinks and tries to get back to work.

Ian cranks the ignition and the Counting Crows CD starts backup at the same spot. He taps forward a few times until itgets to Recovering the Satellites.

He buckles up and backs out of the little parking lotdirectly onto the road out front.

He drives and listens to the song as he passes an old gasstation, a post office and a little storefront with a donutplace next to an insurance company.

His town looks pretty barren. There arent too many cars outeven though this is 5 oclock traffic.

Ian looks out the window and doesnt seem too impressed withthe small town around him.

EXT. LITTLE OLD HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER4 4

He turns onto a gravel driveway next to a house that coulduse a paint job. An old, chipped-white Chevy truck sits nextto a side door.

Ian gets out of his car and walks inside.

    INT. LITTLE OLD HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS5 5

The door creaks as he enters. An older woman stirs a pot onthe stove, looks over, smiles and waves.

    IANHey Mom.

He gives her a hug. Ians mom GRETA is 70, a sweet lady whoruns the show at this house. His dad, ROGER is 73, notcompletely present, and at the moment in the living room inhis recliner watching World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer .

Ians sitting on a couch with a blonde girl, SARA, 26. Shespretty in a comforting, young, motherly way. Theyre watchingParks and Recreation and giggling.

His apartment isnt huge and its modestly decorated. Nothingfancy, pretty normal deal. Theres a couch with a coffeetable in front of it, all in front of a 47-inch TV. On oneside of the table sits a La-Z-Boy recliner. An acousticguitar is on a stand over by the wall.

    Somethings up.

    IAN(melodramatic)

SARA I cant do this anymore. You know,

you really lead me on.(a beat to make it sting)All the time, I think yourethinking more is going on.

She shakes her head at herself. He does the same.

IANWhat do you want me to say? Do you

want me to lie to you?

SARA This is just.. easy . Thats allthis is. Were just 2 sad people who dont have anything else to do.

IANI guess I dont know. And I want tonot know for -- I dont know howlong.

    She shakes her head.

    SARA (sadly)

    And I thought you did.

Theyre both looking at different walls. Sara out of romanticfrustration. Ian out of conversational weariness.

    Finally..

    IAN(lifting the remote)

    IANDo you want any chips?

    SARA No.

    IANOkay.

He unpauses the show. Something funny happens. He forces alaugh.

    LATER ON...

Ians sitting alone in the dark, slouched on his couch. Sarais long gone. Hes watching some late night talk show, Conan or The Charlie Rose Show or something. Its a sad scene, ishe even awake? He looks like a zombie.

You can tell hes thinking about his conversation with Saraearlier. Hed love to block it out but its just not working.

The TV noise fills the room.

Suddenly he starts to get up.

    INT. IANS APARTMENT - KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER8 8

Ian wanders into the kitchen looking like maybe one of hislegs fell asleep. Its not a total wreck in here. The sink isfull of dishes and the trash looks pretty full but thatsabout it. Its not out of control.

He opens up a big cabinet door and pulls out a bag of chipsheld closed by a clothespin. He turns to the fridge.

    9.

  • 8/13/2019 Rise of the Computer People

    11/115

He opens the door and light shines through the room. Hecovers his eyes for a moment and just stands there looking inthe fridge, slow thoughts cycling through his head.

He grabs a beer to go with the chips and heads back into thedark living room.

    INT. IANS APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS9 9

He sits back down and cracks his beer open as he stares at acommercial for car insurance. Its supposed to be funny butIan doesnt laugh.

He takes a big swig and then leans back with his chips. Heisnt doing too hot.

Hes lost interest in the show hes watching. He grabs hisremote from the table and turns the volume all the way down.

He sets the chips back on his coffee table.

He walks over to the guitar by the wall and takes it off thestand. He piddles with it on his way back to the couch.

He takes a few sips of his beer and then gets serious. Hesstrumming randomly in that private way you do when no onesaround. It isnt anything in particular and its just basicopen chords, nothing real spectacular. He seems to know about6 different chords and hes sticking with those.

He starts to mumble-sing along with the chords.

IANHmmm.. doo dee doo dee doo.. Nananana nana nanadoobidoobidoobidoobie..

He makes unfocused trumpet sounds with his mouth. None ofthis is clicking into anything worthwhile and its nothelping his confidence.

    IAN (CONTD)(to himself)

Stupid..He opens up a notebook on his coffee table and pulls a penout of his pocket. Hes wanting to write a song.

Hes strumming and making up words.

    IAN (CONTD)(mumble-singing)

more.. Whatd I gotta do to keepher round.. Shes.. Shes..Going.. Shes going to.. the..car.. Whatd I gotta to do keepher round? Shes going to thecar..

He nods and writes down the new words. He seems somewhatpleased with himself.

Note: Heres how the song goes:

    C G

Whats going on with this girl?

    C F G

She dont wanna watch my TV no more

    C G

Whaddo I gotta do to keep her round?

    Am G (C)

Shes going to her car - So she can go far

He strums some more of his weirdo song.

A few minutes later hes digging through a backpack and he

pulls out a laptop. He sets it on the coffee table. He unzips a pouch and pulls out an AC adaptor.

He plugs one end into the wall and the other into the laptop. He opens up the clamshell and hits the power key.

It takes a few seconds to power up. I dont know what kind ofcomputer it is. Maybe just some standard PC thing.

As he waits he takes another swig of his beer, which isalmost empty. He eats a few chips and looks at a clock on the

    wall. Its about 11:15.

The screen comes up and he moves the mouse over to the GoogleChrome icon and clicks it. It opens up.

He hits a bookmark and it takes him to his e-mail site.

He puts in his password. Enter.

It opens up and he has 4 new e-mails. Cool. He scrolls downand sees theyre all junk mail pretty much.

    They are:

    1) An ad for Guitar Center about a guitar BLOWOUT sale this weekend.

    2) Target wants him to sign up for a special debit card.

    3) Somebody commented on a status update he commented on onFacebook.

    4) One of his tweets has been favorited and retweeted.

Unimpressed, he clicks all 4 to delete them all.

    IAN (CONTD)(to self)

    Ads..

Hes about to execute it and he hesitates for a moment. Helooks at the one from twitter. Hmm..

He unclicks it and deletes the other 3.

Then he clicks the twitter e-mail to open it and read it.Maybe hell see something new.

A friend retweeted something he tweeted the day before. Histweet was: Just another memorable day in the world of usedtextbooks.

His friend sent an @ reply to him: @IantheMann ha ha! Hesmiles a weak smile.

He signs out of his e-mail and goes to twitter and enters inhis login information.

His feed opens up and its all recent tweets from only minutes ago. As he scrolls down 1 hour ago becomes 5 hours

ago. He gets to the spot he was at when he last checked.

more famously on her twitteraccount, @SleepDog, which has beenquoted in Time Magazine, Salon, andThe Huffington Post. The headlineof her twitter page reads, Wheresleeping dogs can lie. When askedfor comment she responded with,Woof. No comment.

Ian takes another swig of his beer. Hes intrigued.

He scrolls back and reads a little of the article beforeclicking over to another article.

He hits back until he returns to the original googlesearch. He clicks images.

Many come up, many from the other women, but some are of theDay hes looking into.

finished a race. Now were looking at a shot with Day surrounded by a bunch ofpeople that looks like an extended family photo taken atThanksgiving.

Uh oh, the next one is her standing with some dude that lookslike he could be her boyfriend.

Ians eyes get big. Hes looking a little creepy at thispoint.

    IAN (CONTD)(to self)Hes probably a brother..

He keeps clicking through more photos.

Now shes on skis at some mountain resort. She looks happyand awesome.

Now shes wearing sunglasses and smoking in what might be anironic shot, though its difficult to tell for sure.

Next shes standing with about 4 other girls who are extraexcited and seem to be celebrating New Years a few years ago.

And here she is on a boat with the same friend from the run.

Finally, its a casual shot of her just standing by a pinball machine. It doesnt look planned or staged, more like

somebody just grabbed a phone camera and took a picture andeven though its not perfectly framed they caught a greatpicture of her.

Ian is staring at the picture, completely absorbed.

He does a keyboard command and blows the picture up to cover

the whole screen. He leans back in awe.

Im here, wanting to say, Hey.

    G Em

Where are you going in this world?

    Am G

I wanna go there with you, girl

Even if the words are pretty corny hes singing with supersincere earnestness. Its slightly sad but he seems pleased

    with his work.

He strums some random chords, trying to figure out the nextpart. Its him moaning and whining over basic chords. Hestrying to make it sound like Counting Crows, who are hisheroes.

Were really getting a view of the process of writing a song.Think of it like a meth-making montage on Breaking Bad .Anticlimactic music plays on the soundtrack.

CLOSE UP of his hand making chords on the neck of the guitar.

CLOSE UP of his pen scraping across the page.CLOSE UP of his face being really into it.

He double checks his notebook and lays it right in front ofhim so he can read it. He does a couple test strums and

    moans.

    He starts an earnest take.

A few seconds later he has to stop because he messed up aline. Dang!

He starts again. We just see bits and pieces of this.

We hear the whole song together:

The way he plays the song seems to take all the goodness outof it. Its funny to the audience but mostly because of howserious hes taking it. He isnt kidding. He MEANS this song.

After he finishes a good take he does a quick mix and bouncesit to iTunes. Then he makes an MP3. He calls it ComputerGirl.

He opens up SoundCloud and logs into his account. He loadsthe MP3 in. This is all very robotic, like hes done thisbefore.

It all goes pretty quick. We see the progress bar sadlycomplete itself.

He immediately goes to twitter and sends an @ reply to Day with a link. It says very simply, I wrote this song for

you. Hes got a surprisingly satisfied look on his face. ISTHIS GUY A PSYCHO?? Or Romeo incarnate?

He leans back and takes a sip of his wine while shaking hishead in smug disbelief.

He looks up at the clock and imagines it spinning faster andfaster. He imagines himself sitting in the same sad desk justgetting older and older and older and older and..

He shakes himself out of the vision.

IANI HAVE to go. If I dont now Inever will. Ill be here forever. I

He shakes his head, aware of how creepy this seems.

He takes a deep breath to calm down.

He takes a few more bites and sips some soda.

Nobody around him knows anything of whats going on.

He looks up for a second and suddenly Day is there. RIGHTTHERE. Day in the flesh. Shes just walked out the frontentrance. Shes dressed in a professional yet casual way.

Ian cant believe it. Hes trying to process this. Shes notas tall as hed envisioned. Shes walking quickly. Wheresshe going?

The line where Day is zigs back in the direction where Ianszagging. She looks at him for a brief second and they makeeye contact. Some sort of electricity runs through Ian,though he plays it down. He nods back, politely, but shes

already turned away by that point.Hes seriously 2 feet away from her and she has no idea

    whats going on.

Suddenly she gets this goofy grin on her face and pulls outher phone.

Smiling silently to herself, she types something in. Ian isseeing this, trying not to stare. DID SHE JUST TWEET?? DID IJUST SEE HER TWEET IN REAL LIFE??

She puts her phone back in her purse and approaches thecounter. Its her turn.

BARISTA GIRLHey Day! Hows your day going? Haha.

DAYIts good. Days day is deigned --good. How are you, Cheryl?

BARISTA GIRLNot bad. Anyway, what can I get forya? A grande Caff latte?

Day pays and walks over to wait by where the drinks come up.She spots another girl she knows and runs over to give her ahug.

Ian is paying attention to them. Hes a little uncomfortable.

Unsure of what to do, he walks over to an empty table nearthe entrance and sits down. He looks around at the prettypacked out morning crowd and is just not feeling verycomfortable. This isnt his world.

DAY (V.O.)(the V.O. sounds a little more real now)

    10:30 AM. Latte #4 of the day.#noregrets

He doesnt grin exactly, hes more impressed that he wasright by her when she tweeted it.

A barista calls her name and she grabs her latte. Ian triesnot to stare, but sees her hug her friend and say bye and

    walk in his direction.

He looks at a wall and tries another sip of hot coffee. Eh.

She passes him and looks his way. This time she smilespolitely but she doesnt seem to recognize him.

    Shes out the door.

Ian sits there processing what just happened. He rubs hisface, relieved this moment is over, but also looking like hefeels like the worlds greatest fool.

He shakes his head at himself. He seems to be having a wakeup call moment.

    IAN(whispered to himself)

    Im done.

He gets up and walks out the entrance.

    EXT. STARBUCKS - CONTINUOUS50 50

As he leaves, he sees Day walking away. In frustration anddefeat he tosses his full coffee cup into a trash can, which,

unbeknownst to Ian, was just changed, so the full cup slamsthe bottom of the can MUCH louder than he intended.

    Whoops.

People turn to look at him. He seems pretty sheepish. Then:
