Today’s venue.

Farnborough was the UK’s first airfield in aviation history and home to the country’s first powered flight in 1908.

From the earliest days, Farnborough has been a centre of military and Civil Aviation research. Many innovations from the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough have left their mark on aviation worldwide.

The perfect place to think differently and inspire our guests in how technological advancements and robotics can and are helping revolutionise H&S across multiple industries.

Message from Steve.Hi folks,

Last year I spoke to you about how the single most important thing for me is protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of all of our employees, contractors and customers. It is absolutely paramount and needs to be built into everything we do.

Over the last year we’ve continued to drive hard on bringing fresh energy and renewed challenge to our health and safety agenda and I am delighted that this has resulted in further improvements in reducing injuries and illness. The effort right across the business to make this happen has been a highlight for me. I am also pleased to see the continued focus on mental health and our Time to Talk mental health strategy, which is designed to remove the stigma around mental health in the workplace. In fact, I am very happy that our approach has been recognised at the Reba Health and Wellbeing awards. It’s a real sign of how the climate is changing in this space and we will do everything we can to continue to look at how we can do even better in the future.

Delivering our vision of being ‘Here for You’ cannot be achieved without working together as one team to ensure that the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone continues to be at the forefront of everything we do. While this is largely dependent on human factors such as good managers, great conversations and our people feeling enabled to challenge, we’re always looking for ways in which technology can help us do this even better.

That’s why I’m glad you could join us here today at rise of the robots – our 2018 health and safety conference. It promises to be an exciting day with plenty of opportunities to explore the relationship between health and safety, and technology, and how they influence one another.

So I hope you have a fantastic day, one that will challenge our assumptions, give us all an opportunity to share new ideas and ultimately make a real contribution to delivering our zero compromise approach.

Message from Karl.

Karl SimonsHead of Health, Safety, Security and Wellbeing

It’s been another extremely dynamic year at Thames Water, seeing a plethora of new initiatives introduced that have affected the health and safety of all those working for and on our behalf.

We continue to see health and safety taken very seriously by our people and teams across our region and this year’s conference is set to be an extremely engaging event focussed on a topic that we already know is affecting the present and future world of work.

The evolution of robotics and technology and the way we are embracing this across Thames Water is very pleasing to see and I am confident our present path in the way we approach the introduction of new technology into the company will lead to even greater protective measures for all our employees and supply chain so we all go home safe and well every day.

I hope you enjoy the event.

Civil aviation in the UK has an enviable safety record which is often studied by other industries as they seek to raise their own safety standards. What is it about the approach to aviation that has achieved this outcome and what can be learnt from it?

Deirdre will outline the ten top factors she believes to be most significant.

Learning from Civil Aviation.

About Dame Deirdre HuttonDeirdre is the chair of the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority which is responsible for regulating all forms of aviation in the UK and is probably best known for its role in relation to safety. She was previously chair of the Food Standards Agency and Deputy Chair of the Financial Services Authority both of which also have safety responsibilities. She believes that there is much to be learnt from looking at a range of different types of industry to improve your own practice.

The Aviation Approach Culture: a strong culture of mandatory and voluntary reporting of faults and mistakes

Intrinsic safety: it is in the pilot and crew’s interest to maintain safety

Competence: regularised and approved training

Air worthiness: robust design approval

Data: constant monitoring and analysis for trends

Expanding global industry: expansion has to be matched by safety improvement or results unacceptable

Business/safety link: high profile industry where accidents impact very severely

Global system: international rules

Regulatory approach: proactive, relentless learning, use of data

Independent and effective accident investigation: supported by strong legal powers

Our guest speakers.

Healthy Performance are passionate about, and specialise in employee wellbeing delivering a range of services including onsite health screening, online wellbeing, health education and promotion and others to a range of SMEs and leading global brands.

During this session, Wayne will be looking at how technology is being incorporated into wellbeing and also providing a unique and interactive demonstration of how we can identify the impact of pressure and stress using live data.

Cyber security is made up of technology, processes and controls that protect us from cyber attacks. Cyber security is an ever increasing priority in both our personal and professional lives. The consequences of

such an attack can have direct implications on us financially and reputationally.

During this session, we’ll be looking at how aware we need to be in this digital age of our own data and security and what we can do to prevent cyber attacks.

With more than 1 million fatalities on the roads across the world each year, Tesla believes that the advent of true autonomy will save lives.

Today, when used correctly, Tesla Autopilot is already significantly safer than a person driving but Tesla’s goal is to develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual driving, via massive fleet learning.

ExhibitionRise of the robots. How robotic technology can help improve our health, safety and wellbeing.

The development of robotic innovation has important implications in the workplace. From making particularly dangerous or monotonous jobs easier to substituting people working in unhealthy or dangerous environments altogether.

Our exhibitors will explore how their robotic technology is aiming to avoid exposing our people to physical and psychological hazards.
