A publication of theNational Association of

Elevator Contractors

Founded in May of 1973, Titan Machine Corp. has been a leader in the Elevator industry for over 42 years and a member of NAEC

since 1982.

Today, Titan Machine has harnessed decades of experience to expertly repair or replace any mechanical component in the elevator or escalator system. Everything from simple bearing replacements, to worm and gear replacement sets, to new hoistway assemblies such as car slings, platforms, and counterweight frames, deflector sheaves, or even the complete rebuild of antique or ostensibly obsolete elevator equipment, Titan can and does do it all.

During its inception, nearly every elevator contractor, both independent and corporate, operated their own machine shop or repair facility. Titan’s founder, Carlos Escobar Sr., saw a distinct opportunity to consolidate the repair and heavy machining needs of the industry. By creating Titan, Carlos was able to offer expert machining and fabrication services thereby freeing

elevator contractors to focus on their core competencies in maintenance, modernization, construction, and repair.

Titan has consistently invested in the people and equipment necessary to offer the widest breadth of products and services to the elevator industry. From humble beginnings in little more than a 3,000sf garage in Long Island City, to its current location comprised of over 80,000sf of production space and adjoining sales, engineering, and administrative offices, Titan has grown in the scope of machinery, inventory, and people to service the needs of elevator contractors regionally, nationally, and internationally.

“Our diverse set of manufacturing capabilities and the vast experience both in our front office staff and our shop personnel has allowed us to remain flexible and adaptive to the changing demands and trends of our customers and the industry”, says Carlos Escobar Jr. “We’ve managed to attract, retain, and develop the finest machinists and mechanical craftsman in our line of work. It’s a necessity now that we see a trend towards the complete overhaul and restoration of well built, and in some cases, over-engineered equipment from decades or even a century ago”.

“Our capabilities are extensive and our resume shows it”, says Mike Spataro. “We’ve manufactured replacement sheaves, repaired or overhauled assemblies, and supplied new traction equipment and structural components in countless marquee buildings, towers, bridges, monuments…you name it. And it’s not just in New York City. We’ve worked on The Washington Monument, LAX Airport, NASA, The Empire State Building,

The Former World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, The Willis Tower (formerly The Sears Tower), various casinos in Las Vegas and Reno, Sea World’s rotating lift, nuclear power plants, grain elevators, US Navy dry docks, municipal mass transit systems including Bay Area Rapid Transit, The London Underground, Metro-North, The New York City Transit Authority, The Port Authority of NJ/NY,…we’ve even worked through the night and repaired drive shafts and replacement sheaves for the US Navy and had parts flown out to sea by helicopter.”

Titan Machine offers a complete package of manufacturing, fabrication, and repair / overhaul facility services for elevator contractors. They offer replacement sheaves for any 1:1, 2:1, single, or double wrap application, replacement worm and gear sets, bearing replacements, bearing conversions, custom engineered assemblies, weldments, babbitt bearing refurbishment, bronze bushings, hoistway components such as car slings, platforms, and counterweight frames, governor and safety overhauls, and complete machine rebuilds including worm gear and motor alignments.

Our membership with the NAEC has given us greater access and fostered stronger ties to a national and international network of elevator professionals.

Located in Long Island City, Queens, just across the East River from midtown Manhattan, Titan Machine is a mainstay and trusted supplier for elevator contractors both domestic and foreign. With projects throughout North, Central, and South America, and marquee projects in Europe and beyond, Titan Machine is truly your “local” global partner.

The 2016 Nominating Committees have reviewed all the recommendations and determined the nominees for the five new Board Members to take office in September 2016. The official report will be submitted in the General Business Session on September 20, 2016, at the 2016 United Convention and Exposition in Montreal, Canada.

Nominated for the Contractor positions are:

Tim Conkling, Vice-President of Capitol Elevator Company, Inc. in Sacramento, California. Tim has been in the elevator industry for over thirty-two years. When Tim joined the elevator industry, he began working in the field of service, installation, modernization and repair, he later moved to inside sales. Tim is QEI Certified, as well as certified through NAESAI. He feels that a major industry issue is keeping up with the advancement of technology. He thinks that NAEC should stay ahead of the changing technologies not by just keeping in contact with the members of the organization, but people in the industry. He thinks people need to remain informed about what all NAEC has to offer. Tim enjoys boating, RV camping, restoring motorcycles and spending time with his wife, Annabell, and their four children, Freddie, Sadie, Rory and Piper.

MOWREY ELEVATOR COMPANY OF FLORIDA, INC

Mowrey Elevator Company enters its 40th year.

Members of NAEC since 1981, Mowrey Elevator Company was established in 1976 by Tim and Laura Mowrey, with a vision to build a regional company dedicated to service and customer satisfaction. An integral part of the strategy to implement this vision was to create a work atmosphere that supported strong family values and encouraged personal growth and opportunity.

Employees are any company’s most valuable asset. Many Mowrey Employees have been part of the Mowrey Team for more than 30 years lending vast experience and stability to the organization. Mowrey has established a fully equipped training center including five working elevators that allow ongoing training of employees for professional advancement and personal growth. All technicians are State certified and many on staff are nationally certified elevator inspectors.

Beginning operation out of a two bay warehouse in Davie, Florida, Mowrey Elevator has grown over the years to include service centers in eight major cities and smaller satellite offices in multiple locations. The 380,000 square foot

manufacturing center in Marianna Florida is strategically located to provide easy access to provide engineering, manufacturing and technical support to all of the service centers.

Mowrey Elevator has manufactured and installed more than 13,000 elevators. All major component parts of the elevators are manufactured in house using “State of the Art” equipment and manufacturing processes. Mowrey equipment is intentionally Non-Proprietary so that customers can choose elevator service providers that meet their needs. This is incentive to provide the best possible service so that Mowrey can be that provider.

In 1981, Mowrey decided to become part of the National Association of Elevator Contractors. This was one element of a plan to develop relationships within the industry, gain credibility, and make connections for employee training and development. This association has benefited Mowrey Elevator Company in many ways, and they look forward to being more involved as company expansion continues.

Future plans include strengthening Mowrey’s presence in every area they operate in by investing in employees and streamlining the process. A special focus is working on ways to strengthen customer

service in order to continue to provide that level of satisfaction that results in a loyal customer base. Mowrey is continuing to develop it’s product to include new MRL designs, and looking forward to exciting new developments in the elevator industry.

Columbia Elevator Products launches

LIFEGUARD® Safety Edge

June 01, 2016 (Oshawa, Canada) EHC Global (EHC), a leading manufacturer of escalator and elevator components, announced today the retirement of Ron Ball, the company’s Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of EHC’s Eastern Region operations. Ted Hornbein, EHC’s General Manager, Asia Pacific, will assume the role of Managing Director, Eastern Region and will report directly to Jeno Eppel, President and Chief Executive Officer of EHC. Ron will continue to be involved in EHC as a strategic advisor.

In 1977, Ron established Escalator Handrail Company in Ajax, Canada, with only one employee, a long-term vision and an international growth strategy. By the early 1980s, the company had successfully expanded into the United States and had established a presence in several international markets. Soon after, Ron expanded the company’s global reach to Europe by integrating EHC into the supply chains of larger firms and OEMs and eventually establishing EHC’s first overseas manufacturing company in Germany in 1992. In the mid-1990’s, anticipating China’s increasing importance in international business and rapidly expanding domestic market, Ron relocated to Shanghai and successfully established EHC China, the company’s largest operation to date. Over the past decade, EHC has continued to grow its global footprint with the establishment of sales and

distribution centres in Brazil, Barbados, France, the United Kingdom and Spain. In 2005, Jeno Eppel was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of EHC.

“With EHC celebrating its 40th anniversary in the coming months, I felt that this was the opportune time to officially retire from the business and enjoy more time with family and friends,” said Ron Ball. “I am proud of the many accomplishments we have achieved since our humble beginnings and have complete trust and confidence in the leadership and commitment of Jeno Eppel and the entire EHC team.”

“On behalf of the EHC family, I would like to thank Ron for his vision, leadership and the many contributions he has made to the company, the local communities we support and the global lift industry over the past 40 years,” said Jeno Eppel. “We remain committed to growth, innovation and continuing Ron’s legacy for decades to come.”

Columbia Elevator Products’ LIFEGUARD® elevator door safety edge was designed most importantly for one reason; to keep the riding public safe. This is why we use optics that have been proven in the field for over 8 years. The design of our chassis was specifically engineered to be easy to install and robust enough to be able to withstand challenging conditions. We know our customers expect a good value and that’s why each unit includes water resistant boards and a multi-volt power supply as standard options. A uni-body, reinforced aluminum chassis with a powder coat finish makes for a design that is not only incredibly tough, but also very aesthetically pleasing.

Why do other edges on the market come in so many versions and require so much mounting hardware? Our design cuts through all the confusion and unnecessary parts. 7 self-tapping screws total

between the transmitter and receiver units is all that is needed. Add a few bits for managing the cords to the car top power supply and you are set. Goodbye are the days of confusing and unnecessary brackets and hardware. The LIFEGUARD® door safety edge will introduce you to faster installs and higher profits!

We are so proud and confident of our safety edge that we guarantee each and every unit. If you are not 100% satisfied upon installing our product, we will refund your purchase or replace it on our dime. This is our promise to you!

The vote of the Board was historic in that Abels becomes the first President who is not an O’Keefe family member. Since its founding over 100 years ago by Denis O’Keefe, Sr., all five Presidents prior to Abels were family members. The grandchildren of Denis Sr. still own 100% of the business. They are all represented on the Board and unanimously approved this new executive team.

O’Keefe is the largest full service elevator company operating in Nebraska and Iowa. O’Keefe is the exclusive distributor for ThyssenKrupp (formerly Dover) elevators in the two state area.

Abels, in addition to his new duties as President of O’Keefe, is currently serving as the President of the National Association of Elevator Contractors. NAEC is an association of approximately 700 members composed of elevator contractors, suppliers, consultants, and other professionals in the elevator field.
