InnovationInnovationInnovationInnovation???? –––– October 2013, Jiju

Malnutrition and hunger have

been reported as the greatest

single threat to world public

health by WHO. This is widely

prevalent over all the continents

especially in the developing

countries. India has been ranked

as one of the countries facing high

rates of malnutrition. This

pressing issue has not been given

adequate attention and here is a

solution currently followed in

Africa where hunger and

malnutrition is a huge problem to

the millions of citizens.

More than 3 million children in

Africa suffer from blindness

caused by vitamin A deficiency; in

Uganda, it is estimated that 28%

of children are deficient.

Currently aid agencies combat

this problem by giving children

vitamin A supplements, but

addressing this issue with a

locally grown food would be more

sustainable.

Hence, they came up with the idea

of breeding sweet potatoes to

contain beta-carotene, to help in

the fight against childhood

blindness. The human body

converts beta-carotene

into vitamin A (retinol) - beta

carotene is a precursor of vitamin

A. We need vitamin A for healthy

skin and mucus membranes, our

immune system, and good eye

health and vision.

A new strain of sweet potato was

conventionally bred which contains

between four and six times as much

beta-carotene as a regular sweet

potato. The OSP (orange sweet

potato) was distributed to 10,000

farming households in Uganda; at

the end of the two-year study
