2 Welcome 3 March 2018

WelcomeAndrew Palmer, Chairman St Cecilia Orchestra

Xenophon Kelsey (conductor)

Xen Kelsey is passionate about music and education and anyone who knows him or has read his Andante report will find a discourse on the state of music education in 21st century Britain. Born in Ripon, Xen an alumnus of Ripon Grammar School, studied horn, double bass, piano and conducting in Manchester and was principal horn and conducting student on the European Summer Schools for Young Musicians in Vienna, Salzburg and Montreux from 1967-71.

As conductor, and guiding spirit, he has specialised in working with young musicians and through his encouragement has promoted young and talented students through many ventures not least St Cecilia Orchestra, Ripon Youth String Orchestra and Ripon Youth Choirs Association and he is the founder and director of the outstandingly successful Vacation Chamber Orchestras organisation, promoting residential courses and performing throughout Europe as well as in the UK.

He has brought to his many orchestras a remarkable reputation for excellence. His entrepreneurial drive and commitment has meant that schools in the area have had the good fortune of live music having been presented in their schools. His most recent enterprise is the setting up of the Ripon Youth Music Network, a website to provide as much help, encouragement, advice and information as possible for young people and their parents across North Yorkshire. www.riponyouthmusic.net

A very warm welcome to tonight’s St Cecilia Orchestra concert at Holy Trinity Church.

We start the 2018 season by showcasing our home grown talent. I am delighted that Chloe Fletcher is performing Bach’s lovely E major Violin Concerto and that Alexia Pelling will play Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto. Other regular players - Nadiia Ivkovs (violin) and Ben Kearsley (viola) - will be taking solo parts in the Martinů’s Divertimento. In between James Fisher from Australia takes on Françaix’s Divertissement for solo Bassoon & Strings.

I would like to take this opportunity of consulting with you – our audience. In common with some of the major establishments and orchestras across the world, we have to look at our costs. One innovation, that many such as the LSO are adopting, is to move to on-line programmes. This is where two days before the concert a PDF of the programme is available for download and therefore free to everyone. Throughout 2018 those who want to buy a hard copy will be able to continue to do so. In addition, we will be trialling the download option and copies of the programme booklets will be available two days before the concert. You could read it before you arrive or download it on to your phone or tablet to read during the concert. As long of course, as your phone is switched to silent mode. What do you think? Do let me know?

We are also very much in need of new committee members. Therefore, if you set yourself a new year’s resolution to get more involved with a community group, WE can help you achieve that goal. I would love to hear from you if you can help on the committee, or you want to comment on downloadable programmes please do contact me at [email protected] In the meantime sit back and enjoy the music.

st-cecilia.org.uk Programme Notes 3

Bohuslav Martinů had an unusual birth setting. He was born in a room at the top of a watch-tower in Polička, a town in Bohemia, close to the Moravian border. As a boy he excelled as a violinist, his townspeople raised

enough money to fund his schooling and, in 1906, he left the countryside to study at the Prague Conservatory.

He fared poorly as a student, showing little interest in the rigid pedagogy, nor the hours of violin practice required. Dropped from the violin program, Martinů was moved to the organ department that taught composition but he was finally dismissed in 1910 for “incorrigible negligence”.

Martinů spent the next several years living back home in Polička. He submitted samples of his work to Josef Suk, who encouraged him to pursue formal composition training, but this would not be possible until years later. As a violinist, he toured Europe with the National Theatre Orchestra, and became a full member of the Czech PhilharmonicOrchestra in 1920.

Martinů departed for Paris in 1923, to study with Albert Roussel. During his first years in Paris, he incorporated many trends of the time, including jazz, neoclassicism and surrealism. He was particularly attracted to Stravinsky. However, he continued to look to his Bohemian and Moravian roots for musical ideas, particularly in his smaller, lighter works such as his several Divertimenti or Serenades. Divertimento IV is scored for strings, 2 oboes and piano and features solo parts for Violin and Viola. It is in three movements: Allegro, Andante moderato and Allegretto.

Born of a musical family and musically educated by the great French teacher, Nadia Boulanger, Jean Françaix made an international reputation in the years between the two world wars. His music is thoroughly

French – witty, neat and precise, and stylish as a Paris gown! He has immense cunning and craftsmanship, uses the simplest of harmonic progression even if, at times, he can be ‘naughty’ in the manner of dissonance. He tends to be at his best in his smaller-scaled works where his ‘will-o-the-wisp’ talent, and his tendency to use ‘catch-phrases’ (rather than themes) make his individual mark. His works are many and varied. The graceful Concertino for Piano and Orchestra brought him to prominence, and was followed by a String Trio, a Quartet for four saxophones, together with ballet scores, choral works, many songs, and even a musical comedy or two! Not much of his music has penetrated the English music scene as yet, but it is very popular in France.

This Divertissement displays many of the above-mentioned qualities. The strange scoring and its indication that the music will sound ‘bottom heavy’ (except that Françaix is very adept at solving his own problems!) provide plenty of humour and whimsicality.

The piece has the following sections: Vivace, Lento, Viva, Assai & Allegro

Ralph Vaughan WilliamsOboe ConcertoSoloist: Alexia Pilling

Rondo Pastorale (Allegro moderato)Minuet and Musette (Allegro moderato)Scherzo (Presto – Doppio più lento – Lento – Presto)

This concerto has an element of cyclic form. Each movement begins and ends with the same pentatonic theme, spanning an octave.

Vaughan Williams began work on the Oboe Concerto in 1943, immediately after completing the Fifth Symphony, with which it shares a great deal. Amongst other things, the concerto began as a revision of a scherzo movement originally intended for the symphony (Heffer 2000, 106). The concerto was to have been premiered at a Proms concert on 5 July 1944, but due to the threat of V1 rocket raids on London the Proms season was curtailed. The piece was first played in Liverpool instead, on 30 September 1944 in a concert by the Liverpool Philharmonic, conducted by Malcolm Sargent, that also included the Oboe Concerto by the soloist’s brother, Eugène Goossens

Pastoral in tone and expansively modal in expression, the Oboe Concerto is deceptively easy to listen to, given the considerable difficulties that Vaughan Williams sets for the accompanying string orchestra, which in the space of the concerto’s eighteen minutes must navigate a host of technical challenges, all at dynamic levels that don’t overwhelm the soft timbres of the solo instrument.

Alexia Pelling – Oboe

Having taken up the oboe at the age of eleven, Alexia went on to study a Masters in Music Performance course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, gaining distinction for her end-of-year recital.

Alexia currently juggles freelance work as a musician and teacher with being a mum to her two young children. She performs extensively as an orchestral musician, appearing regularly with the St Cecilia and Mowbray Orchestras locally, as well as enjoying chamber music recitals and solo engagements.

James Fisher – Bassoon

John Llewellyn Edwards Award scholar James Fisher is a versatile and well-travelled Australian bassoonist who recently auditioned successfully for the BBCSO Pathway Scheme for 2016/17. James has performed at many international concert venues including the Sydney Opera House, Conservatorio di Verona, Santa Maria Della Pieta

and the Schonbrunn Palace. At the age of 16 James played for the Pope at World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. In the same year he was awarded best intermediate soloist at the Australian Double Reed Society and in 2011 James received the award for the most highly commended bassoonist.

As a result of his skill, versatility and enthusiasm James is a highly sort after young bassoonist. This has led to him being asked to perform with numerous international recording artists including Josh Groban, Sneaky Sound System, John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John. As well as symphonic, chamber and contemporary music James also appeared as an extra in the Baz Luhrmann film The Great Gatsby in the role of an orchestral bassoonist. James is very much looking forward to commencing his postgraduate studies in bassoon at the Royal College of Music under the tuition of Joost Bosdijk, Sarah Burnett, Andrea De Flammineis and Martin Field.

6 Programme Notes 3 March 2018

The E-major Violin Concerto is a creation of purest Bachian splendour. Opening with three aggressive chords, built on an E-major triad, that form the beginning of the main subject, the first movement unfolds in a fashion characteristic of the composer, but with some surprises. Two serious episodes in minor provide sharp contrast with the ebullience of the main material. And before the return to the main subject, the violin has a tiny solo followed by an unexpected pause before those three opening chords announce the final full exposition of the movement’s main substance.

The minor-keyed slow movement opens the floodgates of a kind of exquisitely controlled poignancy that is Bach’s inimitable version of Baroque romanticism. The form is chaconne-like, which is to say there is a persistent figure in the orchestra above which the violin, after entering on a long-held note, spins seemingly improvisatory strands of serene expressiveness. Bach at his most exalted.

The exuberant final movement is calculated to be give-and-take between orchestra and soloist – the group refrain appears five times with the soloist’s episodes in between. In the final solo episode Bach gives the soloist a brief but telling bit of virtuosity

Chloe Fletcher – Violin

Chloe Fletcher studied violin at the Guildhall School in London and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She has performed frequently as a soloist, including concertos by Bruch and Mendelssohn. Chloe’s musical passion is chamber music and she currently plays violin with the Dales Ensemble. As well as an active freelance career, Chloe teaches violin, classroom music and French in local schools. Chloe plays on a copy of a Joseph Filius Andrea Guarneri violin made by the Leyburn-based luthier, Roger Hansell.

Haydn’s Symphony No. 22 in E flat major (‘Philosopher’) is a good example of a work that bridges the late Baroque and early Classical styles. Haydn employs the Baroque sonata da chiesa form (i.e. movements in a slow-fast-slow-fast scheme) while making use of a characteristically Classical harmonic language and phrase structure.

The stunning Adagio that opens the symphony represents a hybrid of older ritornello-style form and the emergent Classical sonata form. The main musical idea unfolds in the spirit of a chorale; this idea is first intoned by the horns and is answered, in an orchestrational oddity for the time, by the English horns. This chorale appears in several different keys as the movement progresses, eventually returning to the prevailing E flat major in a kind of recapitulation. The movement is further characterized by a profusion of Baroque delicacies, and suspensions and sequences abound.

A humorous, vivacious Presto follows, providing distinct contrast to the introspective first movement. The Classical aspect of the symphony is further underscored by a third movement in the form of a minuet and trio, the former somewhat plodding, the latter typically dance-like.

In the intriguing finale, Haydn uses a galloping 6/8 meter and hunting calls on the horn and English horn to good effect. Though perhaps unremarkable to modern listeners, the incorporation of hunting music into a symphony surely came as a shock to audiences in the 1760s.

As with most of Haydn’s nicknamed symphonies, the ‘Philosopher’ appellation is not the composer’s own; it does, however, capture something of the work’s thoughtful atmosphere.

Clementi) As Mozart’sreputation grew in the 19th century, three great virtuosi of the pianoforte recomposed his overtures,symphonies and concertos, adding many more notes to suit a more flamboyant style of playing on amuch larger instrument. But instead of a full orchestra, Clementi, Cramer and Hummel wrote for aquartet of piano, violin, flute and cello. On nineteenth-century instruments the results are both excitingand beautiful.Tickets: Adult: £16; u25: £3;
