Frank Gehry's (Architect) Guggenheim, Bilbao

Driving south from Bilbao through swathes of fertile countryside, stone churches and rustic Basquetowns, you don't expect to stumble across an example of splashy modern architecture. But there itis, sprouting from the vineyards, a sculpted metallic hulk - tinted wine red, gold and silver - ratherlike the twisted foil discarded from an open bottle of Rioja.

The hotel at the 150-year-old Marqués de Riscal bodega near Elciego in La Rioja, bears all thewavy titanium-clad hallmarks of its designer Frank Gehry. Ever since Gehry's Guggenheim putBilbao on the map almost a decade ago, designer buildings and bridges have been shooting upthroughout Spain.

The Hotel Marques de Riscal has a wine-therapy spa, whichseems only fair if over exposure to wine the night before hasleft you feeling a little blurred.

The Spa facilities include indoor swimming-pool, hamman, fitness centre, and an enormous variety of spa and beautytreatments prepared with the best products from great grape varieties.

Guests can taste the creative and traditional Basque-Riojan cuisine of Francis Paniego, who wasthe first Riojan chef to receive a Michelin star. We are delighted to provide our guests with the mostinspiring experience so you can savour the beauty, culture, history and gastronomical richness ofthe Rioja Alavesa.

Nestled in the renowned Vinos de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal’s vineyard, situated in the heart of the City of Wine, thehotel’s spectacular and avant-garde architecture by Frank Gehry provides an elegant contrast to the historic wine cellars designedin 1858. Gastronomy, wine and relaxation assembled perfectly at the Hotel Marqués de Riscal.

Vitoria is the capital of the Basque Country with remarkable monumental buildingssuch as the Gothic Santa Maria Cathedral, the Churches of San Pedro and SanMiguel, the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, and the Palaces of Escoriaza-Esquibel andMontehermoso – so there’s plenty to see on a guided historical tour. It was also thesite of the last battle of the Peninsular War, when British and Spanish forces underWellington drove Napoleon’s occupying army back into France. Why not celebratewith a glass of Basque cider, or perhaps the local liqueur Pacharan, made fromanise and sloe berries – careful

Laguardia is a perfectly preserved medieval hill hamletsurrounded by an ancient wall (Muralla), and has a delightfuljumble of cobblestoned streets lined with "Tabernas", wine shops, palaces, and cafes. The name "Laguardia" originates from "LaGuardia de Navarra", the "Guard" of Navarra, referring to itsstrategic importance in the kingdom of Navarre. Although in 1486,Laguardia was incorporated into the Kingdom of the CatholicMonarchs (Isabel and Ferdinand), who would unite the kingdomsof Castille and Aragon in 1492, to form what is now "Spain", thevillage’s culture is entirely Basque, and here the visitor cansample authentic traditional Basque cuisine.

The name “Nueva Victoria” was given to the city byKing Sancho VI of Navarre, who founded Vitoria in1181. At that time it was a walled defensive outpostbelonging to the kingdom of Navarre.

Historically, Victoria has always enjoyed a strategicposition because it is situated on the shortest routebetween the tablelands of Castile and northernEurope. Throughout its history, the city has alwaysbeen known as an important trading centre. Historiansrecord that there were three markets held every weekin the 13th century and after 1399, there were twoannual fairs attended by numerous visitors.

Another important historical featureof the city is its individualprivileges, which declaredall its inhabitants to be equal, without distinction betweennobles and the masses.

Guernica (or Guernika to use the Basque spelling) is of course most famous forPicasso’s painting inspired by its destruction, when Franco kindly allowed theNazis to test their mass bombing techniques out on the village. In town, you mustvisit the Casa de Juntas del Señorío de Vizcaya (the meeting hall of the gentlemenof Vizcaya), with its symbolic tree (Gernikako Arbola) - the Basque leaders used tomeet under it to decide on the interests of the community.

Even before the bombardment, Guernica was a place of great significance to theBasque people, which is the reason why Franco ordered its destruction.
