The Festival ExperienceKooralbyn Kollective - Homespun Bazaar - Part 2Kooralbyn is a small town buzzing with anticipation. Spring has sprung, and brought with it not only new life for the flora and forna, but for the town as a whole. With a new takeaway and salon rounding out the services available, and the resort announcing its intention to open in December, it is time for a little small-town celebration.
Photos by Reneé Barlow
The Country Club Pavillion celebrated a year since opening on 6th September. With the entertainment and most of the stalls also appearing on the roster for Homespun Bazaar, it was a small preview of what’s to come for the community.
If this event was anything to go on, the town is ready for a great day out on 31st October. Over 300 people attended the first birthday celebrations, and with a larger number of entertainers and stallholders, it’s hoped that number will grow exponentially.
The organisers have added more elements to the event, to benefit this small community. With the support of local realestate agent Platinum Edge Properties, there will be trick-or-treat bags

for children who are all encouraged to dress for the halloween event. Participating stallholders will have treats for the children who visit them. Prizes are also being collected, including gift vouchers from local businesses and stallholders such as The Happy Herb Shop, Browns Plains, with tickets given on entry.
Despite pushing forward without council assistance, local councillor Jennifer Sanders has made a personal effort to help support and promote the day. She has personally distributed fliers to locals showing her strong support and encouragement to organisers for a bit of positive community spirit.

Local takeaway, Eat at 131 is also on board, working on a special menu for the day to keep visitors, stallholders, entertainers and organisers alike all with tasty delights for the energy they’ll certainly need.
It’s certainly amazing how communities can come together to support and enhance their own space, and community minded people will give so generously of their time and talent to help a small rural town realise a goal.

F l a v o u rTasting Plate - Scenic Rim HampersThe Scenic Rim is home to an abundance of interesting and delicious food. The area is also quite vast, so to taste what’s on offer there can be significant travel involved. That’s where Scenic Rim Hampers comes in.
Born of a desire to share the region’s offerings in one place, Scenic Rim Hampers provides both unique products and experiences. Nestled at the base of Mount Barney, a visit to the store brings beautiful views. It’s worth packing a picnic to enjoy while you’re there.
The hampers are a little different to what you might see normally. Themed depending on the season, the event, the holiday or the type of food, there is something for everyone in a neat little package. Their store also sells some beautiful local products such as soaps and all sorts of things made from the wool of their alpacas.
The real standout of Scenic Rim Hampers is their tasting table. Not only can you try before you buy, but Emma does such a brilliant job at informing her customers about the food they’re sampling. She knows the producers, and can tell you all about the region and flavours involved. The range you can sample is great and Emma’s knowledge brings interest and enthusiasm to the experience.
For the full adventure at Scenic Rim Hampers, you can indulge in an Alpaca Picnic experience. After your own private tasting, you’ll be introduced to the beautiful alpacas and llamas on the property and be able to interract with them. Emma is as immensely knowledgable about her animals as she is with her products, and while you feed them you will find out a plethora of information about them. A beautifully set up country picnic area then awaits you and your cohorts to sit back, relax and take in the scenery while you feast on whatever picnic you’ve chosen to bring.
Scenic Rim Hampers have just celebrated their first birthday. In their first year they have built a beautiful business and a great reputation in local circles. Their products, location, attitude, great customer service and all around friendliness should see them into a great second year with that reputation expanding and growing.

SoundboardKold CreatureKold Creature formed as the brain child of Chris Ross in 2012, having already started writing original riffs in anticipation of a band forming. Lyndon Bauer joined with his unique style of playing, closely followed by Patrick Stevens on bass. Brent Harman secured the final link in the chain on drums. They clicked as a creative team and have dived into studio work amongst their shows.
Originals are definitely the realm of Kold Creature. Though they have tried the occasional cover, the experience in rehearsals seems to be that their twist on the cover will produce a new riff, which in turn of course diverges into the birth of an original song, while the cover is left behind. If they do happen to add a cover to their repoitoire, it’s sure to be something of their own interpretation.
Progressively groovy, thrash metal is how the band describes their genre, but putting them into any kind of box would be a mistake. When writing, the band prefers not to force things. They allow themselves the space and time for things to flow naturally. They believe this is what makes for the most intense and
Photos by Kelly Ross
PAGE 20
diverse type of tunes. While Chris originally had songs written for the band, the writing process is now more a group effort, drawing from life experience and giving it a unique edge. The songwriting process usually involves Chris or Lyndon giving a starting point, with discussions and changes made by the group to improve and expand on the original idea. The riffs are really what drew the band together, and that’s a strong focus for their music. Lyndon’s “technicality of shreddage” evolved the music into something more expressive and interestingly rhythmic. Patrick and Brent provide a backbone to the band. Each with their own technically diverse talents, it combines to make a cacophony of inspired and intense music.
Kold Creature sees their role in the community as that of support and example. By helping to build a strong live music scene, both in their own work and supporting that of others, it will grow and thrive so that future bands will have a chance to show themselves to the public. By supporting the industry they hope to help provide a space where real music, played with real instruments can continue and stay strong within Australia.
The band has found the way to get heard is that much easier with a manager. Working with the band part-time, Chris’ wife, Kelly is a force to be rekoned with. She has helped the band secure gigs while the lads concentrate on making their music.
Kold Creature can see a revolution of sorts coming in the Australian music scene. The saturation of digital music is bound to do a 180 and head back towards real instuments played live. Their nine track album is due to be released in 2016. Edge of Gravity, the first single off the album is being released to give us a teasing taste. That will happen on 26th of September at the Currumbin Tavern.

Art & SoulSomething Else - Leah @ LyllithsLeah doesn’t really class herself as an artist. She just likes making stuff – all kinds of things.
She has always been a creative person. Her mum’s side of the family is full of artistic people and that influence has meant that with anything that can be made, she will at least give it a go!
Leah’s store, Lylliths Emporium, is a great place to showcase her creations. When she brought in her OOAK (one of a kind) Art Dolls, people didn’t believe that she had made them from scratch. Comments like that really give Leah a boost of confidence as, like many artists, she is her own
worst critic and never quite sure if I she has made something good enough.
Leah also sells her handmade things online and in her Etsy shop which is a great way to get things out there for people to see. When people from all over the World “favourite” her creations it’s a good boost to the ego and spirits. She makes candles, soaps, jewellery, clothing, paintings, sketches, sculptures, voodoo dolls, she has also painted shoes before which were very popular.
Leah’s community spirit comes through with everything she does. Her works inspire and delight and she’s always willing to greet with a smile when people walk through her door. Her store is almost like a gallery, full of her amazing creations amongst other interesting and beautiful products. It’s one of those places you could just get lost in, and come out with something that will delight you for years to come.
