Rocking for the ReefRock the Reef

There are many ways to raise awareness when an issue gets under your skin. The enviornmental health of The Great Barrier Reef has been one such issue for many people. The challenge, of course, is to know how to help without doing the same old thing and having your message lost in the crowd.

Stuart Lee was particularly inspired to act when the plans to increase traffic that passes through The Great Barrier Reef by bulk carrier and cargo ships, and the expansion of ports were proposed. He decided the best course of action was to give support to a group with information and resources relevant to the issue. He chose to do this by bringing together the spirit and talent of the music community and turned the event into a multi-venue festival covering the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society were the beneficiaries of the fundraising. Celebrating

their 50th year this year, they are Australia’s only national charity dedicated exclusively to protecting ocean wildlife and their homes. According to their website, “AMCS has a long, proud history of fighting for the Great Barrier Reef. We played a critical role in establishing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area. We stopped coral mining and oil drilling on the Reef decades ago. We’re still there every step of the way asking the Queensland and Australian Governments to make decisions in the best interest of the Reef and its communities, rather than deals with the mining companies and big developers.”

Organisers made efforts to promote events in four major areas. Hosted in the Sunshine Coast Brewery, Hotel Metropole in West Ipswich, Miami Shark Bar on the Gold Coast and Brisbane Powerhouse. The punk and hardcore community especially got behind the event. All in all, organisers raised about $4000 and were able to support a cause they are passionate about.

F l a v o u rCharme’d Life - Charme’s CupcakesSince its debut in 1796, the humble cupcake has undergone several transformations. It now stands as a glorious, icing topped individual serving of heaven, or at least the best ones can be.

Cupcakes have gone from food for kids, to a serious business. Celebrations of all kinds can include cupcakes as individual serves of themed desert, which also double as decoration. Often times, with full cakes taking a back seat.

Charme has taken the plunge, as cupcake provider to the small town of Kooralbyn and surrounds. She delights in finding flavours to surprise and pleasure the senses, using cake and icing in synergy to create the perfect balance.

For the festive season, she has released a series of themed flavours including egg nog, gingerbread, candy cane. Add that to strawberry jam, and choc peppermint and you’re sure to find something sweetly pleasant

SoundboardDevonianOne of the beauties of the music industry is that so many people dream of being part of it. Anyone who’s been there of course knows it’s those who put the hard yards in who even stand a chance of getting somewhere.

Crashing onto the scene is a rather recent gathering of musicians known as Devonian. Their music is powerful and heavy and appeals to a lot ov heavy metal fans, but with clean vocals and melodic metal, they appeal to a broad demographic . The band members have a wide cross-section of individual tastes, and this shines through in their music.

The band sees their role in the community primarily as entertainers. In addition to this, they support others in the best way possible, by attending events, seeing live music, and supporting other bands product. They like to be amongst the crowd and searching out other local talent.

Devonian has a great community spirit. Their second ever gig was at the Rock the Reef festival in Ipswich, QLD, helping to raise money for the Marine Conservation

Society of Australia.

Devonian material is all original and they are keen to develop their unique sound and have something different to offer. Lead guitarist Mick Randall is the main writer of their material, however everyone in the band contributes to the songwriting process. First and foremost, the band writes to please themselves. It’s a bonus that others are getting on board with the music too.

Being new to the process, the band are trying all avenues they can think of to get their music heard. Other than playing live as much as possible, Devonian has made sure their online presence is professional and visible. They are working on having recordings available through social media soon.

Devonian see that there are amazing bands in Australia’s live music scene, but of course it is dependant on people taking the initiative to get out and see them. Regional areas have always suffered and missed out on a lot of live music, mostly due to the costs and distances involved for bands to get to the locations. With some planning between music promoters and local venues to put shows on, they’re sure the locals would support bands and events if they were arranged in the smaller regional areas.

The feedback Devonian have received from shows so far has been very positive. They love to hear back from their new audiences and are keen to meet more of them when they next play live.

Art & SoulVicki Jasperse

Vicki Jasperse is an award winning artist, currently residing in Kooralbyn. She has been painting for about forty-five years, and has won numerous awards from Townsville to Victoria. She has had several exhibitions, the latest being in Hervey Bay regional gallery and Logan Library.

Vicki usually paints in acrylics and ink, enjoying the quickness of these mediums. Several of her paintings have gone to overseas buyers, as far away as Germany , Holland and Bulgaria. These paintings were of Australian birds and flora.

Vicki enjoys painting commission pieces for clients, as this gives her the opportunity to paint exactly what suits their home and style. She believes that everyone has an artist in them. A beautiful garden, homecooked meal ,and a creative household are all expressions of art.

Vicki sees the development of new technologies in Australia and the world, as an amazing thing, allowing artists to express themselves in many more mediums. To reach a wider audience she tries to do markets but her large canvases make this difficult. She prefers to display in shops and cafés.

Page 17: Rimshot Magazine - Issue 10 - December 2015

ISSUE 10 - DECEMBER 2015 PAGE 17

She is hoping to teach art at Beaucare in Beaudesert early next year, believing that art is for everyone, no matter how you go about it and as long as you are pleased with the result. Vicki is a prolific artist, often times painting until 2am, blissfully unaware of the time. Painting takes her to a different zone, and helpes her to calm down and focus.
