    Dear Friends,

The euphoria of the success of the Chennai Summit and Ignite lasted for more than a month. I too felt very happy at the outcome of both the events. I must compliment Chairman, J.B Kamdar for the outstanding arrangements making it one of the

finest summits that we have had. Compliments to PDG Raja Seenivasan who had promised and lived up to the promise of making this one of the best summit we have had. My compliments to the entire team who worked so tirelessly, everything seems to have fallen in place, the venue, the food at the food court, the House of Friendship, the entertainment, the content of the program, the Breakout sessions, the speakers and the MoUs that we signed.

It was a matter of great happiness that not a single of the 32 speakers that we had backed out. Each day we had a jewel in the crown. In the inaugural session Mr. Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister really set the tone for the meet. He appreciated the work of Rotary and the T-E-A-C-H program. The Rotary International President John F. Germ gave an outstanding speech and TRF Trustee Kalyan Banerjee was at his best inspiring Rotarians to work for this national cause that he had started.

The Literacy Hero Award's program was a runaway success and compliments to Anil Agarwal and his dedicated team who did some path breaking work to ensure that 7.5 million people voted online to make it one of the most visited online platforms and definitely so for Rotary, the public relation out of this was naturally huge.

All speakers for the T-E-A-C-H programs brought in so much knowledge that every delegate must have gone back

more enriched. On the last day the icing on the cake was offcourse Mr. Kailash Satyarthi to whom even on the last day more than 2,000 people were listening with rapt attention.

To me the greatest satisfaction was the fact that we could sign so many MoUs for our future action. The MoUs range from those with international organizations like UNESCO to those with Govt of Maharashtra and with other NGOs like Lord Loomba Foundation, Labour Net as well as with corporates having signed an MoU with the sports committee of CII. All of these will mean that we have lot of work to do and I am sure that all the Rotarians and Inner Wheel members will come forward and take up the challenges and the advantages of these partnerships.

I am sure the District Governors of last year was very happy to receive the Literacy Awards in front of 2000 packed audience. Those who really excelled even received them from the Noble Prize Winner. I am sure that next year Governors will do much better and ensure reporting on time and fill in details for the awards. Have you seen the progress of the Asha Kiran Child you sponsored? If not, then please visit www.rotaryteach.org and log in to 'My Asha Kiran Child' you will be happy to know about the success of your child.

Friends these last two months of this Rotary and Inner Wheel year let us put in our best effort to give the final push even as we start preparing for the next year.

    Shekhar MehtaChairman,Rotary India Literacy Mission

Prakash JavadekarHon’ble HRD Minister of India

Now the thirst is for quality education. But the Government cannot do everything, society has to partner with us and I consider Rotary one of the best partners. We have to bring everybody in the education system because only that can give an individual real freedom; education is emancipation.

Educaon is the key to all human rights, it cannot be ignored any more. Unfortunately 60 million children have never been to school, another 200 million children could not complete their primary and secondary educaon. Globally, 263 million children are not in schools. It is our moral accountability to take up this challenge.

    Kailash Satyarthi Nobel Peace Laureate

It is our job to give children tools to learn by supporng schools. It is also our job to understand the obstacles that prevent them. Somemes the barriers that prevent children from aending school appear simple but to many families they are insurmountable.

    John F. GermRotary International President

    Shekhar MehtaChair, RILM

Where else will you find nearly 2,500 volunteers assembled for three days for a war against iliteracy? These summits fill us with vigour, energy and New hope.

Dreams are not what we get when we go to sleep, dreams happen when we are awake. In Rotary, real dreams are the vision and imaginaons we have when fully awake and we work to make them come true.

    Kalyan BanerjeeTRF Trustee Chair

Literacy Mission should not be understood in just teaching alphabets, but as a stepping stone towards complete educaon. Asha Kiran has been successfully implemented in many states. These will transfer child bondage to child bonding. We have to set up our own examples.Raja Saboo

    Rotary International Past President

DonatingforagoodcauseFollowing Shri Kailash Satyarthi's speech, RILM Chair Shekhar Mehta invited Rotarians to open their hearts to donate to the cause Shri Kailash Satyarthi was supporng so passionately. In a few minutes a total of Rs. 46 lakh was collected and included donaons from PDGs Ravi and Rajyalakshmi Vadlamani (Rs.5 Lakh)Summit Chair JB Kamdar (Rs. 2 Lakh), PDG Ashish Ajmera (Rs. 2 lakh), DGE Maulin Patel (Rs. 2 Lakh) and Rs. 1 lakh each from DG Vinay Raikar, PDGs Ramesh Agarwal, Hanumanth Reddy and Savitha Unani of Inner Wheel.

From RILM PDG V.J Patel repeated his donaon of Rs.51 Lakh, just as he had done last year.

    3, 4, 5, MARCH 2017 w CHENNAI

On the occasion of International Literacy Day, 1997, Kofi Annan, the then Secretary-General of the Uni ted Nat ions, had qu i te succinctly articulated the need for global literacy thus:

Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. [...] It is a bulwark against

poverty and a building block of development, [...] a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.

It has been two decades since, and, rather unfortunately, more than 750 million adults remain illiterate over the world (UIS Factsheet, September 2016), in spite of all the concerted effort put forth by different statal and parastatal agencies. Evidently, a lot more needs to be done, and RILM has rightly taken up the mission to provide necessary support in this domain.

    1. DIKSHA

In this approach student-volunteers from schools/colleges are engaged in providing functional literacy classes to non-literate adults (15+ age) over a period of 45-60 days.

    2. SWABHIMAAN – Dignity Through Education

Swabhimaan envisions setting up of Adult Literacy Centres (ALC) in both rural and urban areas in a centralized location to impart functional literacy to non-literate adults (15+ years). Maximum 30 learners can be enrolled per batch and multiple batches can run in one ALC. The main resource for this intervention is the teacher, who has the sole responsibility of coordinating the project, tracking and reporting the progress of the learners. It can directly be implemented by Clubs or by NGOs identified by Clubs and/or RILMO.

The learners of both the interventions are advised to appear for the NIOS examination at the end of the project, which takes place in March and August every year. On clearing the examination the learners are certified as functionally literate.

The journey towards global eradication of illiteracy is still long and arduous, but to make it appear a little less daunting, let us at least visualise a near future where the need for International Literacy Days would be obviated.

    With hope and regards,

Rajani MukerjiPast District Governor (2013-14), D-3291Joint Secretary, RILM

The enthusiasc team walked to the school seeping in the ambience of the locality as a procession withheld the transport to the main road.

The team interacted happily with the students. The students had small gis for each volunteer who were present there. The group was given a short brief on the school and the library creaon process under GROWBY. Since the school was from Class V only but had not seen story books at an early age, being first generaon students, books for class I to IV were also given to them to explore and catch up to learning levels of necessary.

The group of volunteers then segregated
