CapsicumRoasted Red Pepper Salad

Ingredients:• 10 red Sweet Palermo or sweet pointed peppers

• 1/2 cup olive oil

• 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

• 3 tablespoons fresh parsley and basil, finely chopped

• 1 clove garlic, minced

Method:Roast the Sweet Palermo on a gas stove top or

BBQ turning frequently until the skins are blistered. Arrange peppers lengthwise in a serving dish. Whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, herbs and garlic in a small bowl and then pour over peppers. Serve immediately or marinate at room temperature for several hours. Any le�overs can be stored in an

airtight container and for up to a week.

CucumberSpicy Noodle Salad with Carrot, Cucumber

and CorianderIngredients:

• 1 cucumber, thinly sliced

• 1 carrot, grated

• Handful of fresh coriander

• 1 red chili, thinly sliced

• 100g vermicelli noodles

Dressing Ingredients:

• 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

• 1 tablespoon soy sauce

• 3 tablespoons sesame oil

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 teaspoon grated ginger

Method:

Cook the noodles by covering in boiling water for

3 minutes. Drain and allow to cool. Combine all

salad ingredients with the noodles in a large bowl.

Whisk together dressing ingredients and divide into

separate serving dishes.

EggplantGrilled Vegetable Platter

Ingredients:• 1 medium eggplant, sliced

• 1 zucchini, sliced

• 1 Italian red pointed pepper, sliced

• 1/2 sweet orange capsicum (bell pepper), sliced

• 1/2 sweet yellow capsicum (bell pepper), sliced

• 1 carrot, sliced

• 1/2 onion, sliced

Dressing Ingredients:

• Extra virgin olive oil

• Lemon juice

• Fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

• Salt and pepper

Method:

Submerge the eggplant in salted water for half an

hour to remove the bitterness. Drain well, rinse

and dry. Place a griddle with a little olive oil over

high heat. Grill vegetables, a few minutes per side.

Season with salt and pepper to taste and a few drops

of lemon juice. Place the vegetables on a serving

plate and drizzle with a little olive oil. Top with basil

leaves. Serve immediately.

TomatoTomato, Coriander and Red Onion Salad

Ingredients:• 1 punnet of 8 cocktail tomatoes

• 1/2 red onion, finely sliced

• Small bunch of fresh coriander

• Salt to taste

Dressing Ingredients:

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method:

Quarter the tomatoes and finely chop the red onion

and coriander. Mix together in a bowl. Season with

salt and stand at room temperature to bring out

the flavour of the tomatoes. Prior to serving stir

through the red wine vinegar and olive oil to make

a dressing. Enjoy!!

Dressing Ingredients:

• 60ml extra virgin olive oil

• 30ml white balsamic vinegar

Method:

Peel and cut the watermelon into 1-2cm thick

bite-sized triangles and arrange on a flat serving

platter. Scatter a layer of the red onion and then the

pomegranate seeds. Just before serving, crumble

the feta over the top and finish with the dressing,

season with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh

mint. Serve and enjoy.

Goat's Cheese and Salanova®Ingredients:

• 250g lentils

• 4 red Sweet Palermo or sweet pointed peppers

• 1/2 sprig of fresh parsley leaves, roughly chopped

• 1/2 sprig of fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped

• 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 1 tablespoon French mustard

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 head of green Salanova® or a bag of mixed lettuce leaves

• 2 shallots, finely chopped

• 150g so� goat's cheese

Method:

Boil the lentils until cooked. Drain, rinse and cool.

Roast the capsicums in a preheated moderate oven

for 35 minutes. Toss the lettuce leaves in a bowl with

the capsicum, parsley, basil and shallot. Mix together

the oil vinegar and mustard and pour over the salad.

Crumble the goat's cheese over the salad and season

with salt and pepper.

Roasted Cauliflower with Blue Cheese and Nuts

Ingredients:• 1 large or 2 small cauliflowers, cut into florets

• 120g gorgonzola or blue cheese

• 120g mixed nuts

• 1 lettuce (cos or salanova)

• 2 sticks of celery, chopped

• The leaves from 4 stems of parsley

• Salt and pepper to taste

Dressing Ingredients:

• 10 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

• Juice of 1/2 a lemon

Method:

Place the cauliflower florets in an ovenproof dish.

Sprinkle with a little olive oil, pepper and salt. Roast

in the oven until brown (approx 18 minutes at 180°C).

Allow to cool and drizzle with a little lemon juice.

Roast the nuts in a small pan with a few drops of

olive oil. Rinse and dry the lettuce and divide between

plates.In a bowl, mix the florets, celery, parsley and

nuts. Season with pepper to taste and add a little more

olive oil. Serve topped with crumbled gorgonzola.

Coleslaw with Carrot, Ginger and Spicy Soy Dressing

Ingredients:• 1 cup red cabbage, shredded

• 1 cup white cabbage, shredded

• 1 cup carrot, grated

Dressing Ingredients:

• 3 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 tablespoon light soy sauce

• 2 tablespoons honey

• Fresh chili

• 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

Combine about a cup each of red and white

Carrot Salad with Mint, Coriander and Pistachios

Ingredients:• 600g baby carrots

• 40g green olives, pitted and finely sliced

• 1 bunch of fresh coriander, roughly chopped

• 2 tablespoons mint, finely chopped

• 1 handful of pistachios

Dressing Ingredients:• 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds

• 1 teaspoon coriander seeds

• 1 teaspoon harissa

• 5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

• 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar

• 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped

• A few drops of orange flower water

Method:

Toast the seeds in a non-stick frying pan on high

and crush in a pestle and mortar. Roast the nuts

until crunchy and leave to cool. Blanch the carrots in

boiling salted water until just tender on the outside.

Rinse with cold water and drain. Add the dressing to

the warm carrots and mix well. Just before serving,

sprinkle over the fresh coriander, mint and pistachios.

whisk together the coconut water, brown

sugar and lime juice in a small container.

• 1 red onion

• 1 hand of oregano leaves (preferably fresh leaves)

• 1 box of raspberries (or blackberries)

• Some slices of goat's cheese

• Handful of spinach or cornsalad

• Toasted almond slivers (optional)

Dressing Ingredients:

• Red wine vinegar

• Extra virgin olive oil

• Pepper and salt

Method:

Put the beetroots in an oven dish and roast for two

hours at 180°C. Check they are still firm by piercing

with a knife. Peel and cut into slices once cool. Mix

the beet slices, red onion, and oregano in a bowl

and flavour with oil, vinegar, pepper and salt. Serve

on a bed of cornsalad or spinach. Garnish with

goat's cheese and raspberries. Optional suggestion;

top with toasted almond.

Definition of the Terms Describing the Reaction of Plants to Pests and Abiotic Stresses for the Vegetable Seed

Industry (Adopted by the ISF Vegetable and Ornamental Crops Section in June 2012)

1. Introduction

The relationship between a plant and a pest

is very complex. The terms that describe

the reaction of a plant variety to a pest

are determined by tests under controlled

environmental conditions with known and

characterized biotypes, pathotypes, races or

strains of the pest in question.

In practice however, the ability of a pest

to cause disease in a plant depends on

environmental conditions, the properties of

the organism itself and the capacity of the

plant to defend itself. Varieties within a plant

species can di�er in their ability to defend

themselves. Under di�erent conditions,

such as age of the plant, pest pressure

and virulence or adverse environmental

conditions, the interaction between the same

plant and pest may have di�erent outcomes.

Pests are known to develop and form new

biotypes, pathotypes, races or strains that

can cause damage to plants that remain

una�ected by the original form of the pest.

To promote consistency in the terms used to

describe the reaction of a plant to a pest, ISF

Vegetable and Ornamental Crops Section has

defined the following terms.

2. Definitions

Susceptibility is the inability of a plant variety

to restrict the growth and development of a

specified pest.

Resistance is the ability of a plant variety to

restrict the growth and development of a

specified pest and/or the damage they cause

when compared to susceptible plant varieties

under similar environmental conditions and

pest pressure.

Resistant varieties may exhibit some disease

symptoms or damage under heavy pest

pressure.

Two levels of resistance are defined:

High resistance : plant varieties that highly

restrict the growth and development of the

specified pest under normal pest pressure

when compared to susceptible varieties.

These plant varieties may, however, exhibit

some symptoms or damage under heavy pest

pressure.

Intermediate resistance : plant varieties

that restrict the growth and development of

the specified pest but may exhibit a greater

range of symptoms or damage compared

to high resistant varieties. Intermediately

resistant plant varieties will still show

less severe symptoms or damage than

susceptible plant varieties when grown under

similar environmental conditions and/or pest

pressure.

It is to be noted that if a resistance is claimed

in a plant variety it is limited to the specified

biotypes, pathotypes, races or strains of the

pest.

If no biotypes, pathotypes, races or strains

are specified in the resistance claim for the

variety, it is because no generally accepted

classification of the cited pest by biotype,

pathotype, race or strain exists. New biotypes,

pathotypes, races or strains that may emerge

are not covered by the original resistance

claim.

Immunity is when a plant is not subject to

attack or infection by a specified pest.

FAO defines a pest as: Any species, strain or

biotype of plant, animal or pathogenic agent

injurious to plants or plant products.

Pathogens (microorganisms such as bacteria,

viruses and fungi that cause a disease) are,

therefore, included in the term “pest”.
