THE CITY #THECITY#

Rijeka is a bustling, cosmopolitan towncharacterised by its fabulous history, itscultural edge and its waterborne leisureand industry activities. It can trace itsroots back to prehistoric times, throughvarious centuries of conflicts, rulingdynasties and countries, and periods ofarchitecture change. Today, manybuildings from these periods can be found,especially around the Korzo and the Rivaavenues in the heart of the town.

It was known as Tarsattica city in Romantimes, St. Vito’s Reka in the 17th century,and, as Rijeka when it became a free portin 1719. During this time the city’sprosperity as a centre for industry andshipping grew. In the 19th century itbecame the eighth largest port in Europe.In 1970 Rijeka opened its first airport onthe island of Krk, and its tourism, businesssector and university flourished.

Throughout the periods Trsat castle inUlica Zrinskog, built in the19th century,supremely guarded the city as it doestoday. Following a renovation in the 1960sit became the centre of the culturalactivities in the town. Events includefestivals and exhibitions, which are heldalmost continuously and often involve themany other art galleries, museums, sportscentres and exhibition halls found in thecity.
