PRECEDENTS

Utilizing a gridshell system, the intention of the space should allow the user to feel secure but still be exposed to the surrounding area. A panel system can be utilized to protect the user from natural elements and can also provide an appealing lighting element to enhance the space.

KINETIC SEATINGOn the South West side wall of our gridshell structure, we are proposing to place sliding seats that are moveable from inside to outside seating. They will be placed at the horizontal center of the rhombus shape our gridshell provides. With some permanent support, the seats will be able to slide back and forth on tracks that allow it to cantellever when fully pulled to one side or the other.

CONSTRUCTION

The standard double layer gridshell will be created out of 1” X 2” strips of doug fir, or any other plyable soft woods that will allow us to bend it in the desired shape. The intersections of the wood latice (nodes) will be fastened together using a simple carriage bolt and nut system. One bolt in the middle of each node creates a single point pin condition, which allows the grid to pivot at each point, creating the overall tunnel form.

The wooden gridshell will have a tendancy to want to push out at the bottom and spring back to flat equalibrium. Proposing a floor tie system at the base will hold the two sides closer together, allowing the structure to stand without pushing out.

In order to hide the floor tie, we will utilize the existing rock path. Rearranging the rock path in order to place the floor ties on the same ground plane and embedding them into the path will eliminate the tripping hazard that they potentially propose.
